FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner volume 58 Troy Keeble "The Man's Flower" Is Easy To Grow Looking for an easy-to-grow flower which grows in full sun and produces a splendor of color in late summer and early fall? Consider planting some old-fashioned dahlias. These plants may range from 18 inches to seven feet in height and produce flowers from one-half to fifteen inches in diameter. They have petals with a crystalline texture which gives them a luminous or translucent quality. Dahlias can be grown as spectacular garden subjects or cut flowers for your home. Once called "the man's flower", the dahlia is a native of Mexico. (Our guest columnist this week is Troy Keeble, Area Extension Horticulturist, Cooperative Extension Service, 700 Health Building, 47 Trinity Avenue, Atlanta 32311.) There it is found growing at altitudes of 4,000 to 8,000 feet in ground and broken soils and rocks of old lava beds. But these native types seldom resemble those grown in many garden areas of Georgia. Because of plant breeding, today's gardener can grow dwarf, anomone, peony and cactus type dahlias. Here are some of the cultural factors you should follow if you want to grow dahlias. Locate your dahlia bed in full sun for best results. The soil should be well drained with a good humus content and moderately fertile. Select varieties according to height and color. Now that the soils are warm and moist, dahlia planting season is here. The tubers should be planted six to eight inches deep in a well prepared soil. Dahlia tubers have "eyes" much like Irish potatoes. These eyes are located at the top of the tuber neck where the neck joins the old cane from last year. Many gardeners prefer to plant the tubers with the "eyes" looking up. At first you should only cover the tubers with two to three inches of soil. As the new shoots begin to develop from the eyes the soil should be gradually filled in around the plants until the holes are full. Staking is necessary with dahlias. For the tall varieties a good strong six-to-seven-foot stake should be placed adjacent to the plant just as soon as it goes into growth. As the plants grow, tie.them to the stakes to prevent wind and rain damage. Dahlias require plenty of moisture and fertilizer for healthy growth and beautiful flowers. Keep the soil moist but not water logged. Dahlia plants are very high in water content. A thorough watering once a week is necessary for large strong stems and quality blossoms. Since dahlias grow rapidly and reach quite large sizes, it stands to reason they need considerable fer- (Continued on Page 8) Wednesday, July 19, 1972 Number 29 Milk Inspection Under Dept. Of Ag. For many years, our Georgia Grade A milk supply has been rated among the best in the nation according to U. S. public health standards. Effective July 1, 1972, all Grade A milk inspection came under the jurisdiction of the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Our sanitarians are currently visiting milk producers and processors for the initial inspections. In order to maintain this high rating, your assistance, personal attention, and cooperation with our sanitarians will be of great mutual benefit. Vaccinate Horses To Prevent VEE Will the horse sleeping sickness, Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE), be a threat in 1972? Scientists and other observers who've followed the movement of VEE in recent years are especially wary. They know this killer disease is capable of taking giant steps capable of piercing a vaccination barrier. To protect against a resurgence of the disease in 1972, USDA is urging horse owners throughout the country to have their animals vaccinated, preferably before mosquito populations build up to dangerous levels. Mountain Fair For nine exciting days and nights, the sleepy hills of cool north Georgia will come alive, August 412, for the 22nd annual Georgia Mountain Fair held at Hiawassee. The Mountain Fair has added many attractions this year ... things will bring back many wonderful memories of the days gone by. This is the fair that puts exhibits and personal endeavor back into the limelight. For additional information, contact the Georgia Mountain Fair, Inc., Hiawassee 30546.________' Tobacco Markets Open For Georgia Growers Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin warned this week that a cut in sales opportunity time on the Georgia-Florida flue cured tobacco markets this year would have serious consequences for the Georgia tobacco farmer. Sales opportunity time for only 160 million pounds, has been allocated which is 21 1/2 million pounds less than what was allocated last year. Crop reports indicate that about the same amount of tobacco will be produced this year as was last year. This means that a heavy influx of tobacco from the Carolinas could take up the sales opportunity time needed by Georgia growers and force some Georgia growers to carry their tobacco to the Carolinas after the markets close Tobacco Growing in So. Georgia Georgians Plan Foreign Ag Tour A group of Georgia farmers, agricultural leaders and agribusiness men and women are planning a farm study tour to include four continents during the latter part of September. In addition to studying farm practices, the group will endeavor to promote Georgia agricultural products and trade relations in several European countries, South America and Africa. There are a few openings left on the tour and anyone desiring additional information or who would be interested in accompanying the group should contact the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Room 218, 19 Hunter Street, Atlanta, Ga. in Georgia unless additional sales time is allotted. Sales on the Georgia-Florida belt last year included 136 million pounds of Georgia tobacco, 38 million pounds of Carolina tobacco and seven million pounds of resales or a total of 181 million pounds. "If sales on Georgia-Florida markets even approach last year's sales, it is obvious we are not going to have enough selling time to adequately dispose of all our tobacco," according to Commissioner Irvin. Georgia growers are urged to market their tobacco in orderly manner as early as possible and to insist that their warehousemen give priority to Georgia tobacco in allocating floor sales space. The Georgia-Florida market selling season which opens July 25 will run for seven weeks. Forcing extra lubricant into a bearing until it oozes out past the seal will ruin the seal, and the dirt that collects on the excess grease may be drawn back into the bearing, causing rapid wear. Too much lubricant will also cause a bearing to overheat. Pictured above are Georgia's newly elected state 4-H Council officers, who were announced recently at State 4-H Council meeting at Rock Eagle 4-H Center. From left to right they are Jeffery Ross, Waycross, parliamentarian; Marie LeCroy, Bowersville, vice president; Alex Booth, Commerce, vice president; Nancy Williams, Cordele, president; Bucky Cook, Wrightsville, reporter, and Patti Poole, Eatonton, secretary. Inspect Timber Georgia timber owners should include a check of their land for black turpentine beetles in their timber management program. These beetles often occur when disturbances such as drought, fire, lightning, logging or wind affect the timber stand's condition. These disturbances cause moderate damage by themselves, but a combination of two or more may lead to serious damage if not detected. Make at least two inspections of a timber stand after cuttings or other disturbances. If logging operations or other disturbances took place during May, the area should be checked now and again in September. Consult your county Extension agent for more detailed in- formation about timber management. Page 2 We Get Letters Dear Editor: I am writing a book about the old-time potters of Georgia, who made the churns, jugs, pitchers and crocks used by most Georgians until the 1930's. If any of your readers remember the names of potters in their community, stories about them, what all they made, their equipment and the way they worked, I'd very much appreciate hearing from them. Also, we need homespun clothing and a hand-forged bear trap from Georgia for our Museum of Georgia Folk Culture at Georgia State. John Burrison Georgia State University 31 Gilmer St., S.E. They have the opportunity to learn basic facts about fibers and fabrics and increase their sewing skills. Those who are scienceoriented usually select textile studies. For more information about this or other 4-H projects, contact your county Extension home economist or county agent. OUT TO PASTURE Georgia has a lot of land in pasture. It includes 2,392,470 acres of improved pasture land; 692,675 acres of unimproved, and 1,013,034 acres of temporary summer and winter grazing crops. And all this pasture land, according to the Cooperative Extension Service agronomy department, produces an average of 119 pounds of beef, or milk equivalent, per acre per year. MEXICAN IMPORTS For those U. S. growers who compete with Mexican produce in the American market, the news is not good. Last year's imports of fresh and processed vegetables and fruits from Mexico broke all records. The import value, at $191 million, was nearly twice the 1967 level and over four times the value of shipments in 1960. Fresh vegetables accounted for about $140 million. Of these, tomatoes had the biggest share $95 million. SUPERMARKET Supermarket is well named. Did you know that'a typical one in the U. S. stocks 8,500 different items, of which over 3,200 (nearly 38 percent) are nonfoods. In the dairy department alone, there are nearly 400 items, including 150 kinds of cheese, 60 -ice cream items, and 25 fluid milk products. SUMMER HAIR CARE Believe it or not, your hair grows faster during summer months. A haircut that last six weeks in December will hold its shape only three weeks in July, so plan more frequent visits to your favorite beauty salon this coming summer. Page 8 This round, full, slightly curved bean is truly an American native, for although a number of beans were known and used in Europe before the voyage of Columbus, Lima beans as well as green beans, kidney, pea, pinto and others, were unheard of before the New World was discovered. Lima beans were found in various sections of the Americas as early as 1500. They were named after Lima, Peru, where the European explorers first came across them, but it is now believed that their original home was Guatemala. They'spread from there through the Indian trade routes and were adopted by many tribes of American Indians. Lima beans, both fresh and dried, formed one of the staples of the Indian's diet. Since they are a highly con- centrated food, and when dried are easy to store and transport, they made excellent provisions for the ships trading with Europe and the Far East. Lima beans have never gained much popularity in Europe as they have here because they require warmer weather and a greater humidity to grow than usually found in the Old World. Fresh lima beans are higher in protein than most vegetables and contain fair amounts of vitamins A and C. Dried, they are a good source of protein, iron and thiamine and a good supplement to other protein foods. ' Valera Jessee "The Man's Flower" (Continued From Page 1) tilization. If you use barnyard manure to increase organic matter in the soil, no other fertilization is necessary at planting. If you use other materials, add one-half cup of fertilizer such as 8-8-8 when you prepare the soil. At monthly intervals use one-fourth cup of balanced fertilizer per plant until the plants reach flowering size, then increase to one-half cup. Avoid getting any fertilizer on the foliage or stems and always water thoroughly after applying fertilizer. Your local county Extension agent has a publication available on growing dahlias. For more information, contact him. From Steer To Steak How much of a steer is steak? Just over 10 percent of the original live weight of a 1,100-pound steer ends up as steak. A 660-pound carcass will be obtained from such a steer, with a yield of about 485 pounds of trimmed saleable meat. This is converted to about 112 pounds of steak; 102 pounds of roast; and 272 pounds of ground beef, brisket, plate, stew meat, short ribs, cube steak, bone and fat. THE MARKET BULLETIN Consumer Tips "For Your Protection "For Your Protection" will be a regular summer feature to help you be a better informed consumer and more aware of the services of the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Look for it! Tobacco Markets (Continued From Page 1) Georgia markets and five Florida markets will be staffed with full buyer representation for the first two weeks of the season. At the beginning of the third week the eight Georgia markets and one Florida market that has had two sets of buyers will lose one set and at the end of the fourth week, all 19 of the one set markets will close for the season with the other nine remaining open for three additional weeks with one set of buyers. The markets that will close after four weeks of selling include Adel, Alma, Baxley, Clayton, Fitzgerald, Hahira, Hazlehurst, Metier, Pearson, Pelham, Quitman, Swainsboro, Sylvester, Thomasville and Waycross in Georgia, and High Springs, Jasper, Lake City and Madison in Florida. The markets that will remain open for a full seven weeks with two sets of buyers the first two weeks and one set thereafter include Blackshear, Douglas, Moultrie, Nashville, Statesboro, Tifton, Valdosta and Vidalia in Georgia and Lake City in Florida. The loss in sales opportunity time as well as the number of buyers and the selling time on each market is dictated by a 36 man industry-wide flue cured tobacco marketing committee which includes only three people from Georgia and one from Florida, Irvin pointed out. Straight Line Please tell me what to use to get rid of snails or slugs. I have a 17 month old daughter and don't want to use any poison. Mrs. A. A., Griffin We could have helped you sooner if you had included your name and address. Our sources say stale beer is your best bet. Put out in flat shallow pans or jar lids. *** The enclosed material is growing on my roof on the north side of my house. Will it damage the roof and should I destroy it? How? Mrs. F. M., Lincolnton The plant is a lichen plant, and will cause damage if allowed to develop unhampered. May we suggest that you spray with copper sulfate, one and one half ounces to a gallon of water, as a preventative. *** My German Shepherd puppy chews shrubbery, all kinds. What causes this? Mrs. G. B., Martinez Our dog man advises that there could be several reasons for this. He could be teething; it could be a bad habit, or a mineral deficiency. May we suggest that you contact your local vet to eliminate possible causes. If this is a habit, disciplinary action is needed. *** How do I get rid of bermuda grass in my flower bed? Would pine straw or saw dust kill it without killing the flowers? Mrs. M. J., Dalton Our Plant division suggests that sawdust or pine straw would only aggravate the problem. They suggest Dalapon or Dowpon spray, being careful to spray only the ber muda grass and not the flowers. The Georgia Department of Agriculture supervises inspection of retail and wholesale food stores, food processing plants and food storage warehouses to insure the contents of packaged food products are consistent with the labels and Georgia laws. ALL MEAT - contains only muscle tissue with natural amounts of fat; no by-products, cereal or binders. ALL BEEF - contains only the meat of beef animals. Frankfurters, bologna and other cooked sausage may contain no more than 30% fat, 10% added water and 2% corn syrup, and no more than 15% poultry unless its presence is reflected in the product name, no more than 3.5% cereals and non-fat dry milk, with the product name showing that they are added. The difference between whether a thawed food should be re-frozen or not is the length of time the food is in the partially thawed state and the temperature it reaches. If there are no ice crystals in the food, do not refreeze it. Ham - not canned - must not weigh more after processing than the fresh ham weighs before curing and smoking; if it contains up to 10% added weight, it must be labeled "Ham-Water Added"; if it contains more than 10%, it must be labeled "Imitation Ham". Hamburger or ground beef that you buy in the store has no ex tenders added to it and can be no more than 30% fat; however, did you know that a hamburger by any other name, example, beef patty, burger, etc., can have any number of extenders in it? The Georgia Department of Agriculture is responsible for enforcing the Georgia Quality Egg Laws and conducting sanitation inspections of soft drink bottling plants, confectionaries, bakeries, seafood processing plants, etc. For your protection the Department also verifies the accuracy of counter scales in food stores, collects samples of fruits and vegetables for the detection of pesticide residue and collects food samples for laboratory analysis. Hot Sun Damages Sweet Potatoes Early sweet potatoes can be damaged if they are allowed to lie in the sun too long. The hot days of July, August and September will damage potatoes with sunscald unless they are picked up immediately after digging. Sweet potatoes should never be allowed to lie exposed to the hot sun for more than 30 minutes. Rotting will be severe in potatoes suffering from sunscald, with the direct result for the Georgia grower of a reduced price for his crop. The best way to prevent sunscald is to make sure the digging plow does not get too far ahead of the pickers. Aug. 7 -- Seaboard Stockyard, Colquitt. Aug. 7 -- Appling Co. Stockman's Assn., Baxley.
