FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Volume 58 Tommy Irvin Curtailing DDT Creates Problems The Environmental Protection Agency decision to drastically limit the uses of DDT is an untimely step backwards in safe and beneficial pesticide uses as most of the substitutes for DDT are more toxic, more expensive and pose a greater threat to the applicator, the agricultural worker, non target crops and even pollinating insect populations. DDT has been used for many years as a great life saver in pub- lic health programs of disease, rodent and mosquito control that have saved many thousands of lives. On the farm, DDT has aided in the production of many items that have contributed to higher living standards for us all. And most important, it has been used with a high degree of worker safety where as the substitute pesticides now available pose a much greater threat. The EPA decision is a bench mark decision that is going to require drastic changes in pesticide control practices, particularly on the part of cotton, peanut and soybean growers. DDT will be largely replaced by the organic phosphate group, including methyl and ethyl parathions, azodrin, thiadan and lannate, as well as some carbamates and several other materials. Many of the substitutes are, unfortunately, of a much higher order of toxicity than DDT and their profitable use is going to depend on adherence by the user to rigid safety recommendations in their application. Crop production costs will, of necessity, rise since the price of substitute materials, in many cases, is several times higher than DDT and not as effective. The Georgia farmer and other users should immediately begin to make themselves more knowledgeable in the general field of pesticides and their handling and to thereby equip themselves for the challenge which faces us all as a result of this decision. The Department of Agriculture stands ready to assist in meeting this challenge. Broiler Production What is a good contract for broiler producers? What facilities are needed for an efficient broiler operation? These and other questions are answered in "Broiler Production", a revised circular recently released by the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. Copies are available at your county Extension office. Other items included in the brochure are flock management and a section on self improvement in broiler production. Wednesday, June 21, 1972 Number 25 Big Melon Contest At Watermelon Day A competition to find the state's heaviest watermelon will be held during the tenth annual Watermelon Day at the Atlanta State Farmers' Market, Sunday, July 2. A $25 C&S savings bond prize will go to the grower of the heaviest melon in each of five variety categories -- Charleston Gray, Congo, Cobb Gem, Black Diamond, and Jubilee. Plus, a $100 C & S savings bond will go to the grower of the heaviest melon over all. Georgia Watermelon growers are invited to bring their entries to the Market by 1:00 p. m. for judging. The weighing station will be located in the rear of the market near the stage area. The festivities will include a free slice of ice cold watermelon for every visitor and a country music show starring Archie Campbell, David Rogers and Penny DeHaven. Blueberry Course To Be In Tifton Experts from three seaboard states will pool information on Tuesday, June 27 for a day-long "Blueberry" Shortcourse at Tifton's Rural Development Center. The program, which includes everything from "Chemical Weed Control" to "Blueberry Mechanization", is slated to get underway at 9:45 a.m.____ Gypsy Moth The Georgia Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with the USDA, is presently placing 13,000 gypsy moth traps throughout many areas of the state in an effort to see if the destructive forest pest has invaded our state. Gypsy moths have been in this country since 1869, when imported specimens escaped during experiments being performed by a Massachusetts naturalist. Extensive Federal-State efforts confined gypsy moth destruction to New England, New York and Pennsylvania for many years. In recent years, gypsy moth, populations have built up to alarming levels, with spread occurring throughout much of the Northeast and into parts of the South. The nearly 2 million acres of trees defoliated in 1971 doubled the acreage stripped in 1970, was six times (Continued on Page 8) Poultrymen Have Meet The Rural Development Center, Tifton, will host a one-day seminar for area poultrymen on Wednesday, June 28 on "Fly and Odor Control In Commercial Poultry Operations." Dr. John Shutze, Extension Poultryman, Cooperative Extension Service, Athens, will preside over the meet which is set to get underway at 9:30 a.m. (Straight Line ( Our neighbors have pigeons that are absolutely destroying the roof of our v home. Outside the mess-the roof is being discolored. Is there anything we could put on the roof to discourage the pigeons? We have tried shooting them, however, there are too many to continue this. Mrs. J. M., Chamblee The Game and Fish Commission advises that the only good repellent they have found is strong amonia used with an oil carrier, such as diesel fuel or kerosene at a rate of one pint oil to one gallon of amonia. However, this mixture could discolor painted surfaces or certain tiles or roof coverings. They suggest that you try trapping the pigeons with a suitable wire cage-type bird trap or come to an understanding with your neighbors regarding the number of birds that stay around your home. *** Please advise what can be done about worms in pine trees. Mrs. E. G., Moultrie The Georgia Forestry Commission advises that you probably have pine bark beetles. You may have something that looks like worms which is really either the larvae of the bark beetles, or larvae of the pine sawyer, a secondary insect that gets into a tree after it is dead or very nearly so. Pine bark beetles are very damaging and there is one species which destroys more timber in the south each year than all of the forest fires, diseases and other insects put together. This is the Southern Pine Beetle about which a recent article appeared in the MARKET BULLETIN. May we suggest that you contact your local forester or county agent as soon as possible for assistance in the eradication of these beetles. (Continued on Page 8) Wild Animals Belong In Wild Removing a young animal from its natural environment is not only an injustice to the animal but also illegal. Jack Crockford, Director of the Game and Fish Division of the Department of Natural Resources states that persons are not authorized to make pets of or otherwise interfere with fawns, young raccoons, or other young wild animals. A young animal's natural camouflage coloring and lack of odor usually provide sufficient protection from most enemies, provided it doesn't move. Misguided efforts by well-meaning individuals will only interfere with the natural plan. In fact, handling a fawn or other young animal may cause the mother to abandon her young. Individuals found to be holding wildlife without a permit will be prosecuted. Such permits are not now being issued. Wildlife Rangers of the Game and Fish Division are actively making such cases. For the good of the animal and everyone involved, it is best to leave wild animals in the woods. REVIVE PICTURE FRAMES If you have old picture frames, you can make them attractive again by following this tip from University Extension home economists. Sand frames with very fine sandpaper until they are satin smooth. Then use ordinary sewing machine oil to get that beautiful hand-rubbed finish. No varnish, shellac or wax if needed. 4-H ENTOMOLOGY The study of entomology is one of many educational Georgia 4-H programs pursued by boys and girls wanting to learn more about bugs, bees and butterflies. Even the youngest 4-H'er can start an entomology project. Older 4H'ers learn to improve the health of communities by controlling undesirable insecl populations. Information on entomology, or one of 101 other 4-H learn-by-doing projects is available through your county Extension office. Page 8 THE MARKET BULLETIN The third most important fruit crop in the U. S. (the first is the apple, the second, orange), the peach is a cousin of the cherry, the apricot, the plum and the almond. The peach is a small tree, shortlived (10-20 years) and highly in' tolerant of bitter cold and late frosts. It is fairly tolerant of a variety of soils so long as they are not too wet. The tree will not thrive if it has "wet feet". More than almost any other fruit tree it thrives in sandy or stony loams. The peach is a native of China, where it has been grown for over 3,000 years, both for its fruit and its decorative flowers. It is said to have been introduced into Europe through Persia, and thus its botanical name, Prunus persica. Peaches were once called "Persian Apples". The Spaniards brought peaches to the New World; and they were growing in Mexico in the late 1500's. The French settlers in Louisiana and the English settlers in the North planted peaches, and the Indians carried them inland. Since time immemorial the peach has captured the imagination of poets and artists. In China, where the peach was considered the symbol of long life, porcelains were painted with a peach blossom and given as a birthday gift, to express the wish for many happy years. Both Chinese and Japanese poetry and art are lavish in their praise of the peach blossom and fruit. All peaches are divided into clingstone and freestone, the latter being best for eating fresh, while clingstone is preferred by commercial canners. Mature fruit has a whitish or creamy yellow undercolor. Red color is not a sign of ripeness and blush depends upon variety. Avoid green-colored fruit. These peaches were picked when immature and do not ripen well. Peaches are a good source of vitamin A with a small amount of vitamin C. Valera Jessee 4-H TEEN LEADERS A young and vital sector of Georgia's population is actively concerned with social problems, law enforcement, environmental improvement and in demonstrations. And they make headlines too. They are junior or teen leaders of 4-H Clubs, whose learn-by-doing activities spill over into community, state and nation. They teach younger 4-H'ers to sew, cook, garden, care for the family pet or be a good citizen. For information on 4-H projects or membership, contact your Extension County Agent's office. Gypsy Moth (Continued From Page 1) more than in 1969, and was twelve times more than recorded in 1968. Female moths attach their egg masses to tree trucks and other hard surfaces such as mobile homes and recreational vehicles. These moving vehicles then bring the egg masses into Georgia. The velvety egg masses are covered with buff of yellowish hairs from the abdomen of the female and average about 1 1/2 inches long and 3/4 inches wide. Each egg contains up to 1,000 eggs. In their later stages, gypsy moth caterpillars are from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches long and sport pairs of red and blue dots on their backs. Each mature caterpillar eats one square foot of leaves every 24 hours. A stretch of woods show dramatically how destructive the gypsy moth caterpillar can be. Such defoliation harms trees in two ways. The cumulative shock of one or more defoliations can, in itself, kill some trees. In most cases, loss of foliage is not fatal. But, trees are left in a weakened condition, increasing their susceptibility to damage from other insects and plant diseases. As a last resort, gypsy moths will defoliate pine trees. Such defoliation is not only harmful to wildlife, but lowers our oxygen supply. Although the gypsy moth is not widespread in Georgia yet, there is a possibility that it will migrate into the state. Gypsy moth infestations leave their mark on urban and suburban areas, as well as forests. Caterpillars cover sidewalks and get into water reservoirs, stores, homes and swimming pools. They make parks and other outdoor recreational facilities temporarily unusable and lower property values with tree-killing defoliations. Each summer and fall,"USDA, in cooperation with state Departments of Agriculture, maintain a network of thousands of traps to detect gypsy moth spread and outbreaks before the pests can cause serious damage. Traps are paper containers, smeared with a sticky substance on the inside and baited with the scent female moths produce to lure males for mating. Cows Feed Mankind During a 10-month period, a cow producing 16,000 pounds of milk that contains 3.5% butterfat produces an amount of protein equal to that in the edible cuts of eight 1,200-pound steers or twenty-eight 200-pound pigs. Straight Line (Continued From Page 1) I have Chestnut sprouts in my woods that die of a blight before reaching maturity. Is there anything I can treat these sprouts with to stop the blight from killing them? K. L., Carrollton The Forestry Commission ad vises that the disease of the American Chestnut trees, Endothia Parasitica or Chestnut blight, was first discovered in this country in 1904. Since that time, literally thousands and thousands of dollars have been spent on research for discovering a cure for the disease or a resistant strand of the tree species to crossbreed a resistant tree. No one has been able to find a cure for the disease or develop a resistant variety suitable for forest conditions. However, research is still being conducted and a cure will be found *ho*pe*fully. I have an old barn on my place near which I raised some hogs. Some of the hogs developed a cough and some became crippled. Could this be a disease in the soil? E. N., Colquitt Our Vet people advise that you should clean up any straw, loose boards, etc. around the barn and burn the debris. Then disinfect the area. If at all possible keep the animals away from this area for at least 90 days. Also, if there is any standing water or mud holes in your pasture, try drying them up or fence off these areas as most disease organisms persist in low wet areas. The fact that some became crippled may be related to a mineral deficiency in the feed. May we suggest that you contact your local vet for assistance with your project. # # H= * We are fencing in an area for a horse pasture that has been untended for some time. There seems to be everything under the sun growing there, including bamboo. Is there anyone that could help us with this pasture project? Mrs. E. T., College Park Yes ma'm, your county agent.
