Accidental Deaths 
High In Animals 
Many times an animal owner thinks his animals are being poisoned, either maliciously or accidentally, when he finds them dead with no prior illness. Careful laboratory examinations usually reveal some other cause of death, but accidental poisoning still occurs with alarming frequency. 
One farmer knew that Chinaberries were toxic to his hogs, 
so he decided to cut down the trees along the fence line of his hog lot before the leaves and berries fell. He neglected to fence out his hogs because he thought he could pick up the debris quickly. The next day he had 6,000 pounds of dead hogs, their stomachs distended with chinaberry fruit and

leaves. He had not counted on an interruption preventing his picking up the fallen trees. 
A family dog died a slow, agonizing death from kidney failure. Upon later questioning, if was learned that ant poison containing thallium, a toxic metal, had been consumed by the dog just before it became sick. 
In another Held full of beautiful beef animals, a farmer's son drove a pickup truck with the tailgate down. Out bounced two cans with "just a little" herbicide containing a high level of an arsenical compound. Next day, four animals were dead. 
A pig farmer mixed a new batch of feed and gave it to 200 growing pigs. When they all started to tremble and convulse, his veterinarian sent specimens to the laboratory. A sample of the feed had a high level of insecticide activity. A little detective work revealed that part of his feed was contaminated with an insecticide stored in the same room. What's more, his insecticide was leaking onto the feed, actually making it damp in the sack! 
A dairy farmer parked his tractor in the alleyway of his barn during the winter. As the cows passed by, they licked the battery cables, probably because of the salty corrosion. After losing four good cows from lead poisoning, he started parking his tractor outside. 
Examples like these occur over and over in the experiences of veterinarians and laboratory workers. 
With all the emphasis on environmental safety and pollution these days, people should not forget that their animals are also susceptible to most of the pollutants and poisons that threaten humans.

Feeder Pig Sales Resumed In Ga.

A thorough investigation and inspection of all hogs in the area of the state in which hog cholera was found and inspection of all hogs from common sources has revealed no evidence of the spread of cholera. 
 
Therefore, effective May 1, feeder pig sales were resumed in Georgia provided a permit was obtained by the sale operator from the Georgia Department of Agriculture. 
These pigs are inspected on the farm and a permit issued consigning them to a feeder pig sale. Also, farmto-farm movement was resumed provided pigs were inspected and a permit issued for movement.

A $1,000 compromise settlement has ended a seed case against the Sawan Seed Division of W. R. Grace and Co., Columbus, Miss., for violations of the Federal Seed Act. The seed firm also has offices in Atlanta and Pelham, Ga. 
Officials of USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service said the case involved six shipments of agricultural seed into Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Virginia during 1968-1970. 
Seed shipments into Georgia were found to be-incompletely labeled as to the presence of noxious-weed 
seeds. 
The Federal Seed Act is a truth-inlabeling law designed to protect farmers and other consumers in the purchase of seed. It requires, in part, that agricultural seed be labeled 
 
codes or colors to indicate the date the sandwich was prepared but such dating methods are not easily read by the consumer or the retail mer- 
chant. A simple and easy to read 
date showing the month, day and year the sandwich was prepared will be required by the Department. 
There are nearly 100 sandwich preparation plants in the state and four or five out-of-state distributing their products in Georgia. The sandwiches are sold in retail stores and snack bars and from food vending wagons serving construction sites. 
The plants in which such food products are prepared are under the sanitary inspection of the state health department but the proper labeling and dating of such products to protect the consumer and the merchant are the responsibility of the 
 
Prior to Georgia's Sea Grant Program, Dr. Smith conducted a survey of diseases and parasites of marine fish in their natural environment - the unpolluted fertile estuaries of Sapelo Island. At the same time, experimental plots were constructed by other investigators from the University of Georgia to determine the role of the estuaries in the cycle of marine life. 
When the Sea Grant Program was initiated in May, 1971, the veterinary researchers were ready to move into the second phase of their investigation - the determination of diseases and parasites occurring under culture conditions. Culture 
programs of shrimp and flounder were implemented.

Eichornia crassipes, pictured above, is one of the most beautiful water plants known to man; it is also one of the most despised. To be so lovely, one would never imagine the thousands of dollars this plant has cost as well as the damage it has done to streams, ponds and other waterways. 
Wherever the water hyacinth grows, it presents a problem. Nevertheless these plants are usually grown solely for ornamentation in ponds, along stream banks and even as interesting house plants in aquariums. This plant is unable to withstand frost and it dies back every winter, only to come back in full force next spring. 
If this is the case, then why would anyone knowingly plant a water hyacinth within 100 miles of his pond or stream - simply because it is an unusual and handsome plant. The idea of flowers floating in the water is a serene thought, especially when the flowers are colored in pale lilac, purple or white. 
The water hyacinth has adapted itself to a floating existence, its clusters of leaves being buoyed up by the inflated leaf-stalks which resemble bladders. From the base of each cluster hangs a pendulous mass of gray-brown roots, which obtain all the nourishment for the plant from the water. When the water level drops, depositing the plants on the mud, the roots function as normal roots and bury themselves in the ground. 
Be very cautious when planting water hyacinths in your stream or pond and be prepared to thin them out several times during the summer to keep them in bounds. Or, if you decide they are more nuisance than they are worth, an application of 2-4-D will kill them as well as any other weeds in the surrounding area but will not harm the fish, according to our Entomology Department.

been constructed to maintain white shrimp under varying temperature conditions simulating those fluctuations found in the estuaries. This project is being undertaken to determine the effect of temperature variations on the development and morphology of the shrimp's digestive tract. 
Since shrimp currently constitute the major portion of Georgia's fish industry, their findings could have a decided impact on the state's economy. 
The commercial fishing industry in Gorgia has existed since the early 1900's and is of major economic importance in six coastal counties. Due to the seasonal nature of commercial fishing, however, the full potential of the industry has not yet been realized. The Sea Grant Program provides for exploratory studies of the commercial industry with emphasis on additional marketable species, new fishing techniques, and maximum utilization of boats, equipment, and personnel. 
It has been estimated that man currently derives only 2-3 percent of his total calories from the sea. And yet 70 percent of the solar energy (the ultimate source of all food) reaching earth falls on the oceans. The applied research made possible through the Sea Grant Program could provide insight into maximum utilization of this expansive and largely untapped food reservoir. 
Consumers Beware 
"Bait And Switch" 
Recently there have been several cases reported in Georgia of the familiar "bait and switch" practices. The Georgia Department of Agriculture urges all consumers to be on the alert for such practices. 
Consumers should realize that bait and switch methods exist in almost any form of merchandising appliances, automobiles, furniture, carpet sales, membership plans, etc. 
Basicially, bait and switch is the practice where a merchant will advertise or offer for sale a product at one price, then try to get the customer to buy another product usually at a higher price. 
Consumers should always be on the watch for bait and switch sales practices - usually that deal which is really too good to be true. You just can't get something for nothing. 
REMOVE CANDLE WAX To remove wax from your candelabra, run hot tap water slowly over the holders. Replace candles while the holders are still warm. The candles melt slightly, causing them to stand firmly when they cool. Take care to line your kitchen sink when removing tallow, as this wax could cause a plumbing blockage.

Home Economists 
Hold Annual Meet 
The Georgia Home Economics Association will hold its 53rd Annual Convention in Macon, May 1820 at the Macon-Hilton Hotel. Executive committee and executive board meetings will be held Thursday, May 18. General registration will begin at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 19, in the lobby of the MaconHilton. General Assemblies will 'begin at 12 noon with a luncheon meeting and continue through noon on Saturday. 
Three hundred professional home economists are expected to attend this convention. Membership of GHEA is comprised of individuals holding college degrees in home economics. College students working toward home economics degrees are included as associate members. Any qualified home economist who is not now a member of GHEA will be eligible to attend the convention upon payment of 1972-73 dues.
