FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Volume 58 Tommy Irvin U.S.-Ga. Co-op On New Egg Law The Georgia Department of Agriculture and the U. S. Department of Agriculture have established a new cooperative agreement for the protection of the egg industry of Georgia in the enforcement of the Egg Products Inspection Act. In December of 1970, the U.S. Congress passed an egg products inspection act to be implemented in two phases. As of last July, phase one of this program dealing with egg products plants was begun. As of July 1, 1972, phase two of this program will be implemented by Georgia Department of Agriculture inspectors in cooperation with the U.S.D.A. This part of the act will require all Georgia egg packers and producers to register and be licensed by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Agriculture inspectors are presently being trained and qualified for federal egg inspection licenses to qualify them for the task of controlling the sale of restricted eggs ~ checks, dirties, leakers, incubator rejects, inedibles and loss eggs. Except for checks and dirties, all of the eggs must be denatured or destroyed at the point of separation so they will not get into consumer food channels. Checks and dirties can be sent to egg breaking plants for processing under inspection. Georgia egg packers and producers are being mailed this week federal registration forms to comply with this new program. Registration must be completed by June 1, 1972. All plants grading shell eggs for retail stores, restaurants, institutions, or food manufacturers, producer-packers who pack for the consumer trade and all hatcheries must register and be licensed by U.S.D.A. We feel that this program will be of ultimate benefit to the entire egg industry of Georgia and to the consumer. In addition, this is another effort of the state and federal departments to work together to avoid duplication of effort. If you do not receive a blank please write the Department or the Consumer Marketing Service, 19 Hunter Street, Atlanta 30334. Advisory Horse Show Committee Formed The American Saddlebred, Arabian, Morgan, and Tennessee Walking Horse Associations have joined together to form a statewide horse show advisory committee. This committee will assist any group wishing to put on a horse show. Information may be obtained from the Ga. Horse Show Advisory Committee, P. O. Box 28652, Atlanta 30328. Pine Bark Beetle Rampant In Georgia The Southern Pine Beetle is one of the most destructive forest insect pests in the south. This little critter along with two of his cousins probably destroys more timber in the south each year than all other forest enemies put together. The beetles attack all native in the south. Their favorite host, however, app- ears to be the loblolly pine which is our most abundant pine species in the northern area of Geor- gia. The coun- Suuthern Pine t j es j n and A glob of hardened resin, white or reddish in color depending on the tree, is formed at each point of attack by the beetle. The Pine beetle destroys the Cambium layer, the most important layer where cell division and growth of the pine tree takes place. around the Atlanta area have been hit with one of the worst infestations since 1963, which was an extremely bad year. These beetles are approximately 1/8 to 3/16 inch in length. The winter is passed in the bark of host trees and the insects can be active during warm days even during all of the winter season. There are generally three to five generations a year depending on location and weather conditions, with the possibility of a large tree being killed in four or five weeks. An attack is usually started when one particular tree is weakened; it may be from a lightning strike, from ice breakage, construction damage, or just a low vigor tree. Once that one particular tree is attacked enough beetles can reproduce there so that even the healthiest tree in the forest is attacked. Large overmature trees are favorite targets, because they do not have the growth vigor to throw the beetle off. At each point of attack, a glob of (Continued on Page 8) Number 13 Have Seed Tested For Best Results Due to weather conditions before harvest last fall, many Georgiaproduced soybean seed are germinating below 50 percent. Any farmer who has saved his own seed should send in a sample for testing to determine the germination before attempting to plant. Send about two and one-half pounds of seed, well packaged, to the State Seed Lab, Room 537, Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, 30334. Much of the cotton seed produced in Georgia will not germinate above 70 percent and needs to be tested also. Both cotton and soybeans must germinate at least 70 percent to be offered for sale in Georgia. New Poultry Disease Declared Emergency Disease By U.S.D.A. On March 16 a shipment of exotic pet birds was received in Georgia from a federally quarantined area in California having the foreign disease, Velogenic or Asiatic Newcastle Disease, brought into the United States through the importation of exotic birds. It is much more virulent than the American type of Newcastle that we have had for some time. Should this disease involve the poultry industry in Georgia it can be devastating. The movements of the exotic birds in Georgia are presently being traced and quarantines being placed on the pet shops that have received these birds. All poultry producers and exotic bird dealers and owners are urged to be on the watch out for any unusual conditions in their birds that are acute and cause a high death rate in birds. Should you encounter a problem of this nature report it immediately to the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Animal Health Division, Capitol Square, Atlanta, 30334. This disease has been declared an emergency disease by the USDA and a task force is presently operating in California to eradicate the disease from that area. Page 2 We Get Letters (Editor's note: We have received many letters and calls from our readers regarding the "What Is Sweet William?" column which appeared in the March 8th issue of the BULLETIN. We wanted to share two of the most interesting ones with you.) Dear Editor: My wife and I came from England last month to settle here in Gay, Georgia. Each week we have been here we receive the MARKET BULLETIN which we always find interesting to read. As I am a horticulturist, I particularly take notice of the flower or plant section on the back page. Reading the article by Valera Jessee on Sweet William this week, I have one point which might interest your readers. I quote, "History fails to tell us who Sweet William was." Well, I am a horticulturist, not a historian, but I believe the flower was named after William I of England who adopted the flower as his crest or part of his crest. This was carried into battle against the Scots who were constantly fighting the English during that period. Of course, the Scots had no love for William or for his Sweet William either. Consequently, the Scots called Sweet William - Stinking Billy - and it is still known by that name in some parts of Scotland today. Mr. Trevor Howard P. O. Box 85 Gay, Georgia 30218 Dear Editor: I have heard that Sweet William was named for William, the broken hearted lover of Barbara Alien. The "heart" of the flower encircled by red and white was his broken heart. Page 8 The most popular ground cover of all, Vinca Minor, also known as Creeping Myrtle, Running Myrtle and Periwinkle, was known in Medieval England as "Joye of the Grounde." Vinca is from the Latin "vincula," or band, and for many years the plant was believed to have mysteriously binding powers. Old herbals observed that "...leaves eaten by man and wife together causeth love between them ... leaves held in the mouth stayeth bleeding at the nose ... tied around the calf, it easeth the pain of cramped leg..." Whatever its medical powers, there is no question but that the plant thrives in any common garden soil, that it rapidly carpets bare spaces in sun or shade with deep dark foliage and an abundance of blue, pink, or white blooms. Vinca Minor grows where grass won't, in shade or at the base of trees, even on steep slopes. It is an excellent ground cover for all problem areas. Valera Jessee Trail Ride Has Winners The third annual competitive trail ride sponsored by the Georgia Arabian Horse Association was won this year by Claude Abercrombie of Douglasville, Heavyweight Division, Dr. B. F. Voljavec of East Point, Lightweight Division, and David Abercrombie of Douglasville, Junior Division. The forty mile ride was held at F.D.R. State Park near Pine Mountain with 22 horses entering and 17 completing the required course in the time limit. Stone Mountain Has Benefit Horse Show The Yellow Jacket Youth Benefit Horse Show is slated for April 1 at Stone Mountain Park's new covered arena. Probably not - so that means you are just about like most everybody else - young and old - married and single. The decision then that must be made is what to do to get the most out of the money that you have. The first thing we really need to consider is how much money we have, how much we will have coming in, and how long the amount of money we have must last. What you really want to do with your money depends on your goals, values and personal desires; but it is so important to evaluate what we want in terms of what we need. So it is very important to plan your spending. No one really wants to,take on more obligations than he can pay for and be satisfied with. So it is important to figure out how much we have and what it will take to achieve the things that are really important. Some of the things that can help you figure out your economic standings are: (1) keep track of your income, (2) keep track of what expen- ses you have regularly, (3) plan a way to save for those big things you want. Keeping these records will enable you to evaluate your spen- ding and help you decide if you spent the money for things you really wanted or maybe just because someone else did. After you have decided what you really want to buy or save to buy here are a few suggestions on purchasing. 1. Inspect goods before you buy and know what you will be getting for your money. 2. Find out who the manufacturer of the product is. 3. Examine what the product is made of. 4. Check the use and care manual or instructions. 5. Think about the life expec- tancy of the product in relation to how long it will be needed. 6. Examine the guarantees or warranties - what, how long and by whom. 7. Consider used or not quite so expensive substitutions when they meet your needs. 8. Figure extra costs and upkeep before buying. 9. Be a season conscious shopper. 10. Shop comparatively. Pine Bark (Continued From Page 1) hardened resin, or pitch about the size of a dime or smaller will appear. These little globs of resin may be white or reddish depending on the tree. Several persons have described them as looking like little pieces of popcorn in the cracks and crevices of the bark. If the bark were peeled off, there would be a network of tunnels and galleries somewhat "S" shaped in appearance. The only known effective control measures involve a sanitation procedure, which means taking down and disposing of all the wood. The tree should be sprayed with Lindane and BHC (benzene hexachloride) which can be mixed with water or fuel oil, to kill the broods of beetles that are in it. All trees that have pitch tubes should be removed whether they are already brown and dead, or completely green. Healthy trees can be sprayed with Lindane or BHC as a preventative measure. However, the Southern Pine Beetle attacks the entire tree from the top to the bottom so the full length of the tree should be sprayed to the point of run-off. If you have any problems with your trees or suspect that you have Pine Beetles, contact the Georgia Forestry Commission at the nearest office to you. Homemaker Helpfuls If your windows are difficult to open, spray the groove with an aerosal furniture* w* a*x. To keep pinch pleats on light weight draperies in shape after laundering, slide ordinary clothes pins, not the spring type, over the pleat from the top while draperies are drying. *** Need a portable sewing center? Why not a discarded suitcase? The side pockets can hold the patterns, thread, scissors, tape measure and other sewing items. At clean-up time, everything can be folded up and stored in a few minutes. To keep a satin quilt or comfor ter on the bed, tack a small sheet or flannel blanket on the back of the quilt. Straight Line What will keep birds from eating strawberries? E. B., Metter Just before the strawberries become ripe (just as they begin to have color), cover the bed with a plant bed cover or a fine net. The cover should not be placed direc tly on the berries, but rather on a frame just above the berries. When they ripen, the cover may be removed. This should be a matter of just a few days. The berries should be picked immediately upon removing the cover. Would you please identify this monster? It looked like a baby alligator, only with a short snout, mouth full of teeth, tan in color, later changing to red polka dots, rough looking bumps down his back in streaks, feet looked like web feet only toes separated, stomach had suction cups down entire length, and was about 16 inches long. We found it in the feed room where hay is kept. Mrs. L. B., Douglas The reptile you described closely resembles a salamander, known as a hellbender of mudpuppy. They are fairly common in Georgia and Florida. They are not dangerous, however, their bite is painful. Enclosed in my letter is an olive seed. I would like to know how to plant and grow the tree, if it will grow in this part of the country. W. T., Rocky Face Olives only grow and set fruit in the Pacific southwest due to its high heat and draught requirments. The tree is killed by 15 degrees F. and the fruit by 28 degrees F. The tree will live in the extreme south but due to the high humidity will not set fruit. They will grow in most soils but require good drainage. I have bought four different tulip trees from nurseries and they grow but never bloom. What is wrong? Mrs. S. C., Savannah We need to know what variety of tulip trees you have. If you are referring to the tulip poplar, it takes fifteen years to bloom. The tulip magnolia should bloom unless it was killed by the cold weather. Wednesday.
