FARMERS & CONSUMERS Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Market Bulletin VOLUME 57 F. Wendell Bobbitt Plant Food Society Helps Agriculture Georgia has 17 million acres of farm land almost half the land in the state and what's happened on these acres in the last two decades borders on being a miracle. Production has virtually doubled, and income which these acres produce for their owners and managers has skyrocketed from just over $500 million to well over $1 billion. When a state's agriculture makes this kind of progress, it must have something going for it. We like to believe that one thing contributing to this progress has been the Georgia Plant Food Educational Society. GPFES was organized in November, 1952, at a time when no single organization was getting agricultural agencies and agricultural industries together to set goals for farming in (Our guest columnist this week is F. Wendell Babbitt, President, Georgia Plant Food Educational Society, Inc., P. O. Box 546, Savannah, 31402.)______________ Georgia. Cooperating with the College of Agriculture, Extension Service, the State Department of Agriculture and other agencies, the GPFES served this important purpose. From its beginning nearly 20 years ago, The Society has had as its major objective the spreading of information on how to increase farm productivity and income. The fact that income has risen from under $600 million to $1.14 billion last year is evidence that the goal has been achieved. The organization, programs, procedures and cooperation between the Plant Food Educational Society, the Extension Service and other agencies has been so great that other states have patterned their programs after ours, and today Georgia is looked upon as a leader in the changing and growing agriculture industry. Of course, the first contributions of the Society were modest. All we could do in the beginning was raise enough funds to sponsor the Extension's soil fertility program in just six counties. But in these counties the Extension agronomy department carried out an intensive educational program on how to prodi,~ higher and more economical crop yields. As the Society grew it was able to cooperate with the Extension Service on many other programs, such as Lime for Profit, Soils and Fertilizers in-Depth and, this year a new one, Fertility for Urban Areas. In addition, we participate in seminars and workshops which (Continued on Page 8) Wednesday, December 8, 1971 Number 48 G.T.A. To Auction Breeding Seasons The Georgia Thoroughbred Association members will auction seasons to thirteen stallions for the 1972 breeding season at their December 7 meeting. Seasons will be sold only for services to Registered Thoroughbred mares. A minimum bid of $100 is required for each stallion. Atlanta 30305, marked Stallion Season Bids. Proceeds of the auction will be for the benefit of the Georgia Thoroughbred Association. Carter, Irvin Sponsor Ag Meet A conference on '"Future of Agriculture in Georgia", jointly sponsored by Governor Jimmy Carter and Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin will be held in Tifton, Sunday evening December 12th and Monday, the 13th, at the Rural Life Center. Beef Short Courses To Be Held In Jan. A series of three short courses early next month may help Georgia beef cattlemen gain the information they need to raise the percent calf crop in their herds. "Beef Cattle Reproduction" is the subject of identical meetings to be held January 4 at the Northwest Georgia Branch Experiment Station, Calhoun; January 5 at the livestock arena, University of Georgia Coliseum, Athens, and January 6 at the Rural Development Center, Tifton. Registration at all three places will begin at 9 a.m. Tree Seedlings Available To Georgia Landowners The Georgia Forestry Commission has approximately seven million tree seedlings left for sale to Georgia landowners. The initial crop was 48.6 million ' Farm Meeting Farm leaders from all states in the Southeast and Southwest areas of the country will meet in Atlanta, December 8 and 9, according to J. Paul Holmes, Jr., State Executive Director of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service in Georgia. State committeemen, state directors, and state program specialists from nineteen states are expected to attend. These farm leaders are charged with the responsibility of administering the Federal farm programs in their respective states. The meeting is significant, in that every cotton producing State will be represented, Holmes said. Special Horse Sale Held For Christmas There will be a Special Christmas Sale of registered Tennessee Walking colts, mares, and pleasure horses on December 11 at the Southeastern Fairgrounds in Atlanta. Tack and other horse equipment will be sold at 10 a.m. Green Trees Make A Safe Christmas A fire safe Christmas means a bright Christmas. Families should choose a green, fresh Christmas tree. Trees that have been harvested for some time will usually begin to shed its foliage, and tend to be a fire hazard. To keep the tree fresh, place it in a bucket of water, and keep the tree outside until ready for mounting. For mounting saw off the end of the trunk diagonally at least one inch above the original cut. Keep this cut surface covered with water the entire time the tree is in the home. Other important factors are checking the water level daily and not placing the tree near sources of heat. Trees, left in a heated room for two weeks, dry out to the extent that a small spark could turn it into an inferno. Not only is it a fire hazard, but the fading of the foliage detracts from the tree's appearance. Do not use candles on the tree or nearby where there is a chance for an open flame to come in contact with the tree. Christmas tree light cords should be checked for worn spots, shorts, loose connections and broken sockets. Lights should always be turned off before retiring for the night. Smoking should not be allowed near the tree among decorations or The total crop was reduced approximately 20 percent due to high winds and rain at the Herty Nursery, Albany; hail storms at the Morgan Nursery, Byron; and hail and high winds at the Davisboro Nursery. According to Ray Shirley, Forestry Commission dicector, slash pine seedlings constitute "70 percent of the remaining trees. The cost per thousand is $5. There is also an abundance of red cedar and dogwood species. Red cedar make excellent Christmas trees, fence posts, windbreaks and hedge rows. Other than its ornamental use, dogwood, as a specialty wood, brings a good market price. The red cedar is priced at $10 per thousand and dogwood at $25 per thousand trees. Upcoming special beautification occasions for tree planting include Make Georgia Beautiful Month in January, Richard B. Russell Beautification Day, February 10 and Arbor Day, February 18. Other available species and cost per thousand are longleaf, $5; bicolor lespedeza, $6; and eastern white pine, $9. Priced at $10 per thousand are Arizona cypress, catalpa, black locust, sawtooth oak and yellow poplar. A transportation charge of 50 cents per thousand trees must be added to the above costs if trees are delivered by state truck to county ranger headquarters. Payment must accompany all orders before shipment can be made. Seedling application forms can be obtained from the Forestry Commission county rangers, county agents, Soil Conservation Service technicians and Agricultural Conservation Program officers. All orders must be submitted on a Forestry Commission application form. For assistance in determining your reforestation needs, contact your local county forest ranger. piles of wrapping paper. Remeber, green moist trees reduce the fire hazard and lengthen the joys and happiness of Christmas. Families should choose a green, fresh Christmas tree. Trees that have been harvested for some time will usually begin to shed its foliage, and tend to be a fire hazard. Page 2 We Get Letters Dear Editor: On the back page of the issue of MARKET BULLETIN dated Nov. 24th, the question was asked, "What Is Wiregrass?" The answer to this question was so inaccurate that I was compelled to write to you in an effort to correct this error. It was decribed as being Bermuda grass. This is so wrong that I will try to describe Wiregrass below. Wiregrass is probably the original native wild grass of this part of the country. No one knows how it got started as it does not produce seed and does not spread from its original clumps and is very easily destroyed by any cultivation and never comes back. It is well described as "Wiregrass" for each blade just grows out without joints and is like a small wire and never produces any seed. It dies down in winter but comes out new in the spring, even after being burned over. It prefers high land. If you would tike I will send you a sample of the real wiregrass. N. Sloan Coolidge, Georgia (Editor's note: Thank you for your letter, Mr. Sloan. We have received numerous response from this article. Many flowers, plants and grasses indigenous to particular areas become known to the local inhabitants by names different from what they may be called in other areas. By the same token it is the practice of some to distinguish among the various varieties of a family of plants, grasses, etc., by'their common rather than generic name. However, according to three of our best sources of information, Wiregrass is in fact Bermuda grass. A. WEBSTER'S UNABRIDGED DICTIONARY: Wire grass, any of various grasses having wiry culms or leaves: as (a) a European slender-stemmed meadow grass widely naturalized in the U.S. and Canada, (b) yard grass, (c) Bermuda grass. Roll dough real thin, sprinkle all over good with sugar enough to sweeten and yet be sticky when baked. Roll up as for jelly roll. Seal edges by dampening. Cut in small pieces. Place about an inch apart on greased baking pan; bake along with biscuits. If too much sugar is used you will need to lower the temperature. These can also be made with pie crust and varied with mixtures of sugar and cinnamon and a few pecans. Mrs. T. E. Page 8 Blue Cohosh is a native plant ideally suited to covering the ground in areas of dense shade. It is not a ground hugger but rather forms a canopy, about two to three feet high over the ground. The herbaceous perennial is a good companion for ferns, baneberry, may-apple, Solomons' seal and goldenseal. The flowers in early to mid-spring are not especially showy. They form in a cluster just above the leaves and are greenish-purple with a yellow center. The most attractive feature of the plant are the beautiful "blue" berrylike seeds which quickly follow the flowers and are most conspicuous in early summer. The foliage of the plant is a single large leaf which is carried in umbrella fashion halfway up the stalk. The Blue Cohosh is a hardy plant and may crowd out weaker plants due to its robust growth patterns. Plant this perennial in shade and in humus-rich soil which is always somewhat damp, even in dry spells. Plants can be multiplied by dividing the thick root stocks in early spring or fall. Seeds planted in the fall will germinate the next spring. Plant Food Society (Continued From Page 1) bring farmers to the campus for intensive training and how to get maximum production from their land. We are involved in the sponsorship of annual agricultural chemical workshops, plant disease diagnostic workshops and fertilizer short courses. The goal of a $1 billion farm income in Georgia, which the Society set when it was organized in 1952, was reached in 1967. Farm income has climbed every year since that time, and last year was $1.14 billion. With record crop production this year, we look for another increase in farm income. And through the years, fertilizer has continued to be one of the farmer's best buys. The Extension Service estimates that every dollar spent on plant food returns six dollars in farm income. While most inputs the farmer has to buy have doubled and tripled in the last two decades, plant food has hardly gone up at all. From our small beginning of only a handful of members and enough funds to support a soil fertility program in just six counties, we have now grown to 433 members with sufficient interest and support to sponsor more than a dozen programs and activities for the betterment of Georgia agriculture. THE MARKET BULLETIN (Straight Line What are these seed and what are they used for? Mrs. J. G., Smyrna The seed were beyond recognition by the time they got here. If you had given us your name and address, we could have contacted you much sooner. When sending seed, bugs, or whatever, be sure to enclose a sample large enough to identify and wrap properly for mailing. *** My husband would like to eat wild rabbit but we have heard so much about rabbit fever until we are wary. Can you tell us something about it and is it safe to eat wild rabbit? Mrs. J. S., Auburn Dr. Eberhardt of the Vet division advises that rabbit fever (tulremia) is a disease transmitted in the dressing procedure of the rabbits infected with ticks bearing the disease, the ticks being the vector or carrier of tulremia. If water tight gloves are used in dressing and no blood is allowed to contact the broken skin areas of the hands or other body crevices, no danger exists from cooking and eating wild rabbit meat. However, this does not preclude the fact that a rabbit can be infected with other diseases. *** I have some blackberry seed that I want to plant when should I do it? When is the best time to transplant daylilies? What will take grease off my carport? Mrs. L. A., Americus Once again, if you had included your full name and address, we could have helped you much sooner. Blackberries are planted in the spring and daylilies in the fall. Tri-sodium phosphate will remove grease from your carport. *** I have a cork oak tree about 45 feet tall and about 18 to 20 inches in diameter. Has anyone in Georgia ever successfully harvested cork? Where is the largest cork oak in the state? A. W., Collins The Georgia Forestry Commission advises that it is not known if anyone has ever harvested cork. The cold weather here damages the tree. According to them, there is a tree in Montgomery county that is 32 feet tall, nine feet four inches in circumference, and has a crown spread of 39 feet. So you may have the larges*t *tre*e. When is the best time to set out climbing roses, apple, peach, and pear trees? Mrs. J. H., Flippen Set roses in January and February, apple, peach and pear trees in December and January. *** What is the easiest way of hulling black walnuts? J. L., Mansfield Well, we asked nutty, (the nut man) and he said to run over them with a car or truck. So far, no one has been able to help us. Sorry. *** I read your article on dressing deer and would like to know where to get the booklet you referred to. G. K., Conley The Game and Fish Commission, Washington-Trinity Building, Atlanta 30334. *** How can I kill fleas around the nose, ears, and eyes of my rabbits? N. E., McBean Fleas may be eradicated from tender areas on rabbits with a small amount of 5% Sevin dust. *** When do you take up dogwood, small spruce and white pine, mountain holly, and mountain cedar? J. T., Blue Ridge Spruce pine and white pine should be moved from December until March and dogwood in early spring. These should be set now if already dug. *** Please tell me what these bugs are. They cover my carport every morning and the pest control people here don't know what they are. They leave a black place everywhere they touch. Mrs. B.C., Augusta Our Entomology division advises that these are May beetle larvae. They feed on grass roots and take three years to mature. 1971 just hap- pens to be the end of the three year cycle. Use Chlordane or Aldrin on the soil around your carport for control. *** Is there any kind of spray I can put on my small lot so the ponies will eat the grass? They will not eat over their own droppings. J. R., Albany The Vet people say to take a small handful of commercial fertilizer or agriculture lime and sprinkle over each of the horse droppings, then take a garden rake and scatter the droppings into the soil and grass in the surrounding area. This will help to disseminate this material into the soil quicker and in so doing the ponies should find the grass more ap- petizing. *#* Would you please tell me how long lemons will keep (without refrigeration) as I would like to send some to my husband overseas. Mrs. W. W., Cuthbert Mrs. Francis McKay, the Fulton County home economist, advised that temperature during shipping and the condition of the lemons would determine how long they would keep. It is almost impossible to say if they would arrive fresh. May we suggest that you try shipping a few, wrapped in tissue paper individually, just to see how they would keep. *** Several mimosa trees have died around here and now mine are "bleeding". Is there anything I can do to keep it from dying? Mrs. R. W., Rockmart Your tree has mimosa wilt. We regret that there is no control for this disease. ABOUT BLENDERS You don't really need one of those deluxe, multi-speed blenders, Mrs. Housewife. A simple, and less expensive, three-speed blender will do the same jobs. Home economists say the secret of a blender's effectiveness is skill in using it rather than how many speeds it has. THE REAL THING? A lot of homemakers are wondering how to tell real orange juice from the imitations. Well, the Food and Drug Administration just may be of some help. PDA has proposed that all orange-drink labels list the amount of pure orange juice, by percentage.
