FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner VOLUME 57 /. Wtltet Myets, Jr. Forest Farmers Work Together The Forest Farmers Association was organized in Valdosta, Georgia in 1941 to give timber growers, large and small, a greater voice in matters affecting their interests. At that time no organization existed to protect and advance the objectives of timber growers in the South. Moreover, the timber picture in the South, at that time, left much to be desired. The lumber industry was at a low ebb, the pulp and paper industry was just getting started, and the South's timber supply was greatly diminished from the glory days of the 20's and early 30's. There was only limited capital available and few incentives to rebuild the forests of the South. Nevertheless, the Association's members energetically tackled the task ahead. One of their first actions (Our guest columnist this week is J. Walter Myers, Jr., Executive Vice President, Forest Farmers Association, 4 Executive Park East, N.E., Atlanta, 30329.)________ was to lend support to the movement for a timber capital gains law to provide greater incentives for a forestry program. The group also sought greater funds for fire protection and research. And because they believed firmly in the free enterprise system they strongly opposed and helped defeat a proposal for a system of federal regulation of forestry activities. As soon as World War II was completed, the stage was set for a major rebirth of interest in the development of the South's forests. The Forest Farmers Association broadened its efforts, and in 1953 moved its headquarters to Atlanta to better serve its 2000 - member, 15 state area. Forest Farmers Association is proud of its contribution to the South's vastly improved timber situation. It is the only regional forestry organization representing southern timber growers in Washington. Over 120 representatives of the Association have testified at some 60 Congressional hearings during the past 20 years. Their purpose has been to provide timber growers with a voice on matters affecting their interests. This included seeking more adequate funds for controlling wildfires, a public responsibility since 99 percent of all forest fires in the South occur through no fault of the landowner. Other activities included working for more adequate funding of insect and disease control work, and increased forest research covering the entire gamut of forest management and product use. Among the resulting research breakthroughs (Continued on Page 8) Wednesday, November 3, 1971 NUMBER 44 Exception Allowed Catfish Diseases Studied In Swine Movement Since Georgia has become declared a hog cholera free state, an additional exception is being allowed to the state-wide quarantine pertaining to the controlled movement of swine. Farmers who offer swine for sale at livestock auction markets are allowed to "no sale" these swine if they do not obtain the price they desire. The "no sale" swine are to be returned to the farm of origin under automatic quarantine and isolation for a period of at least 30 days prior to them being moved into channels of trade again. This exemption has been in effect since May 1, 1971. It is hopeful that this exemption has been and will be advantageous to farmers whose swine are not of a grade and class that will command a fair market price. They will be able to return these to the farm of origin and improve their quality during the 30 day period to the point that they will bring better prices. The Georgia swine industry and all other people connected with it are to be commended for their efforts in Georgia obtaining hog cholera free status. Your continued cooperation is earnestly solicited. Counselor's Day To Be In Tifton High school guidance counselors from south Georgia will be special guests of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture and Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College during "Counselor's Day" at the Rural Development Center in Tifton, November 11. Keynote speaker will be Dr. Henry W. Garren, dean and coordinator of the College of Agriculture. Seed President Elected For '72 Robert M. "Bob" Hurd has been elected president of the Georgia Seedmen's Association for 1971-72. Mr. Hurd is associated with Pennington Grain and Seed, Inc. Madi- !,, son - He has been ""'' "^ a seed man for 25 years and is a specialist in seed marketing. Other officers elected were: Frank Wilkinson, First Vice President; Byron Elliott, Second Vice President; and Roy C. Jones, Secretary Treasurer. The Association is in it's 32nd year, and is made up of people concerned with seed in Georgia. Almost every member is either a competitor, a customer or a supplier to his fellow members. The exception to this would be certain honorary and associate names who have unselfishly contributed their time and talents by recognizing the importance of good seed in Georgia. As Production Increases Researchers at the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine currently are engaged in solving one of the problems plaguing the catfish producer-disease. According to Dr. John B. Grat- zek, professor and head of the Department of Medical Microbiology and leader of the fish disease project, "literally hundreds of thousands of dollars are lost each year by various disease conditions among catfish." As an example, Dr. Gratzek cited channel catfish virus that can "wipe out every catfish fingerling in a pond." Since 1968, a substantial in- crease in Georgia's catfish industry has occured. An indication of the state's growth in catfish production Drs. Donald L. Dane, EmnieU B. is evidenced by the newly organized Shotts, and John B. Because of the economic factors involved in the production of catfish, the producer can ill afford disease losses. By 1969, the economic impact of disease losses among catfish producers prompted Drs. E., Lakeland The Game and Fish Commission advises that the worms can be frozen and used as bait. **** My inlaid tile is scratched and damaged. Can I put new tile on top of this? Mrs. L. P., Atlanta It is best to take up the old tile and thoroughly clean the floor. If it is a cement floor, use muratic acid to clean the old glue from the floor. If not a cement floor, use a regular agent, available at your tile dealer's, to clean the old glue up. No manufacturer will guarantee tile that is placed on top of other tile. **** How is the best way to cook eggs for most nutrition? L. C., Newnan Our home economist advises that all methods of cooking eggs contain the same nutritional value. She recommends four eggs per week for a well-balanced diet. Selection of Georgia Farmer of the Year for 1971 will be made next month by THE GEORGIA FARMER magazine in cooperation with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. Farm organizations, professional agricultural workers or groups and individuals may nominate individuals for the symbolic honor. The only requirement is that the individual receive all of his income from farming or farm-related activities. Though not a requirement, it is preferable that the nominees live on the farm which they operate. The farmer chosen for the honor will be named at the Swine Expo '71 scheduled at Tifton's Rural Development Center December 1-2. Judging the nominees will be based 50% on his progress in agriculture, 25% on his soil and natural resource conservation practices and 25% on his contributions to community and state. Nomination blanks are available from the offices of county agents, county Farm Bureau chapter offices, and vocational agriculture teachers. Page 2 We Get Letters Dear Editor: I enjoy the MARKET BULLETIN very much. Particularly, the informative articles which appear to be getting greater emphasis currently than heretofore. I note that a Mrs. R. W. of Cochran, Georgia, recently inquired as to how she might remove algae from white brick and mildew from white woodwork. The editor of "Straight Line" suggested that she obtain sodium hypochlorite from her paint store. A better and cheaper source of sodium hypochlorite is chlorine bleach, available at her local grocery if not her own kitchen. Three-quarters of a CUD of chlorine bleach to a gallon water brushed on the mildewed areas or applied with a sponge should accomplish the desired result in less than half an hour. The area should then be rinsed with plain water or a mild detergent. We are attaching a bulletin covering the uses of chlorine bleach for dairy and creamery sanitation. Other free literature is available on uses in the home, etc. We hope this information will be of some value to your readers. C. E. Reiley Division Production Manager (Editor's note: Mr. Reiley, we are very grateful for your letter and information. We regret that we were not permitted to use the name of your company's product since it is our policy not to mention any products by name in the BULLETIN. However, if some of our readers would like similar information, we will be happy to forward their requests directly to your attention.) THE MARKET BULLETIN Ag Cqrwi Bugging The Bugs For A Living Sheep sorrel, the friend of no man, makes its home in abandoned fields, meadows and pastures throughout the state. Although the interesting looking perennial receives no help in cultivation, it manages to spread very easily and grow healthy plants every year. Sheep sorrel is characterized by smooth stems, 4 to 12 inches tall, alternate leaves more numerous at the base and many small reddish flowers. The leaves of the sheep sorrel are the most distinctive feature about this plant. They are somewhat arrow-shaped at the base and resemble a narrow spear at the top. The sour taste in the leaves makes the plant undesirable for eating, although a related species, curly dock, is well-known for its pleasantly sour taste in raw or cooked dishes. Sheep sorrel spreads by horizontal rootstocks as well as by seed. It is common in thin soil which is low in nutrients and usually acid. The plant, however, will tolerate acid soil better than crops and pasture grasses. In poor soils, sheep sorrel often crowds out many crop plants, particularly alfalfa. There are two established methods to rid your pastures of sheep sorrel, one the direct chemical approach, the other being the organic or natural process: Using 2-4-D compound in lawns, fence rows and pastures, treat affected areas as often as necessary. Several applications are often required although there is no injury to grasses, reportedly. Without chemicals, pull or hoe isolated scattered plants to prevent future seed production. Plow infested area and plant clean cultivated crops for several years in succession. Indemnity Payment Offered To Beekeepers An indemnity payment program for beekeepers whose bees are killed by pesticides used near their bee colonies was announced by USDA. The program was made retroactive to cover bee losses dating back to January 1, 1967. More information about the program can be obtained from Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service offices. An entomologist is a person who studies insects because they are living things just as he is and because they affect his health and comfort, his food, fiber and shelter. He learns to cope with them or to use them for his own benefit. An entomologist is deeply concerned about man's survival on Earth, which depends in large measure upon his ability to control his insect enemies. The Department of Entomology has an excellent faculty with breadth of background and wide interests. Courses are offered in general en- tomology, insect morphology, toxicology, acarology, advanced economic entomology, insect physiology, advanced general en- tomology, and larval taxonomy ... among other things. The department's facilities at the University of Georgia are new and rank with the best in the country. They contain the largest permanent general insect collection in the Southeast and excellent equipment for research and teaching. Additional facilities and equip- ment an electron microscope, radiation equipment, gas chromatographs, etc. are available in strong supporting departments. The Department of Entomology offers one or more scholarships paying tuition and fees to outstan- ding juniors and seniors majoring in entomology. Federal, state and local govern- ment agencies employ research and control entomologists. Some of these agencies are: The Department of Agriculture, The Public Health Service, the Army, Navy and Air Successful Peanuts Peanuts have become a successful crop in Georgia in a short period of time. As recently as 1962, the value of peanuts produced in the state was a little over $57 million. But last year peanut production was valued at $145 million, highest of any crop grown in the state, according to University of Georgia agronomists. The tremendous increase in per acre yields is believed to be primarily responsible for the increase. Forest Farmers (Continued From Page 1) have been direct seeding of southern pines, development of faster growing superior seedlings, and product research which opened the door to a brand new southern pine plywood industry. Meanwhile, the Association has developed an effective educational program concentrated on three main activities. It publishes Forest Farmer, a monthly magazine for the practicing forest landowner, which hasn't missed an issue in 30 years. It also publishes the annual Forest Farmer Manual, a layman's handbook on forestry which has been adopted as a textbook at 14 southern colleges and universities. Completing the triangle is the Southern Forestry Conference, sponsored each year by the Association where landowners have an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas on latest accomplishments and trends. The Association has, also, developed an excellent working relationship with the soil and water conservation districts in the South. More than 60 districts currently belong to the Association, each representing more than 600 members. Force, The International Point-Four Program, State Department of Entomology and Health and local insect abatement programs. Private industries employ entomologists to develop new insecticides; to control pests in foodmanufacturing plants, homes, farms, forests, and resorts, and to collect and prepare specimens for distribution to teachers. Some of these concerns are: agricultural chemicals manufacturers, pharmaceutical houses, pest control companies, biological supply houses, resort owners, private agricultural organizations, and timber and cotton growers. Universities, colleges and high schools employ entomologists as teachers and researchers in their classrooms, experiment stations, extension services, museums, biological stations. The United States now has over 6,000 full-time professional entomologists. Many more are needed. If you choose Entomology as a career, you will be assured of continuous and gainful employment in a very important field of science and you will be rewarded greatly in terms of personal satisfaction as well as salary. Protect Fruit Trees Against Nematodes Georgia farmers planning to set out fruit trees this winter should consider treating the soil for nematodes. Nematodes are tiny worms which live in the soil. These pests enter the roots of fruit trees and cause extensive injury. Trees with damaged roots become stunted and bear very little fruit. Georgia Extension horticulturists say you can help avoid injury to your new fruit trees by treating the soil where each tree will be transplanted. Treat a 10' x 10' area and plant the tree in the center. Contact your county Extension agent about recommended materials that can be used for treatment. Catfish Diseases (Continued From Page 1) to the common diseases encountered by catfish farmers. The trio of researchers is now aided in the investigation by four graduate students who are preparing for careers in fish disease study. Working primarily with the three most common diseases, Columnaris disease, Aeromonas infections, and channel catfish virus disease, the researchers are conducting extensive studies in an effort to develop a practical method of immunizing fish against disease. Two University buildings have been outfitted for the continuous culture of catfish fingerlings under highly controlled environmental conditions. Confinement of the fingerlings provides the researchers with the opportunity to perform indepth studies of the common catfish diseases and to investigate methods by which the diseases might be controlled.
