FARMERS & CONSUMERS Georgia Department vf Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner IVI9ri\6T DUII6Tin VOLUME 57 W. A. Law Milk Industry Is Changing Methods and procedures of handling milk from farmer to consumer have undergone drastic changes in Georgia during the past two years. All Georgia milk producers may, or may not, agree on the value of the changes, but changes there must be to keep pace with modern marketing practices. Matching the modernization trends in milk marketing, American Dairy Association of Georgia recently pooled resources with the states of Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi to form the organization of Southeastern United Dairy Industries Association. "Sudia", as the new S.E.U.D.I.A. is known, is designed to eventually weld the advertising, promotion, nutrition and education programs of ADA and NDC in the basic 10 Southeastern states into one unified and coordinated effort. The fact that the Southeast has traditionally had the lowest per capita consumption of milk in the nation, and (Our guest columnist this week is W. A. Law, State Manager, American Dairy Association of Georgia, Inc., 315 W. Ponce De Leon Avenue, P. O. Box 216, Decatur, 30031.)________ that South Carolina is probably the only state with a lower consumption rate than Georgia, places the burden of boosting milk sales squarely upon those who produce the milk in Georgia and the Southeast. Dairymen, Incorporated, a dairy farmer cooperative, has already acknowledged the urgency to build stronger markets in the Southeast by pledging l%of their average member price per cwt. to Sudia. It is hoped that all cooperatives will follow the lead of D. I. in funding the efforts of Sudia. By pooling resources within the framework of the regional organization of Sudia, dollars can be shifted from the high producing areas to the populous centers where the consumers of milk are located. Under this new system of allocating promotion dollars on a per capita basis, there is no doubt that Tennessee and Kentucky funds will be spent in the metropolitan Atlanta market, and other Georgia cities, such as Columbus, Macon, Savannah and Augusta will also fare very well, provided the existing funding agencies in Georgia live up to their potentials. The name of the game is "Selling Milk" -- stimulating consumers to use more milk -- to convince the public that at 16tf per pound, milk is the best economic buy in the grocery store -man could live longer on milk than any other single food - and it tastes so good. Wednesday, August 4,1971 NUMBERS! Go. Included August Gardening In Emergency For Fall Reward Disease Plan U. S. Secretary of Agriculture Troy Keeble Extension Horticulturist Most areas of Georgia have been receiving a bountiful supply of rainfall. Flower and vegetable gardens are still flourishing. However, August will take its Clifford Hardin has added six states, toll on our flowers and vegetables. Hence a bit of planning and activity now will including Georgia, to the national emergency disease plan as a result of the outbreak of Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis in Texas. bring beautiful rewards in the fall. Garden mums or chrysanthemums truly bring a beautiful autumn and fall season. The yellow, pink, purple, red, orange and bronze masses of mums bring a fitting climax to the growing season of another year. The states added to the plan, which originally included Texas and its border states, are California, Arizona, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama and Florida in an effort to create a barrier to prevent any possibility of spread of the highly contagious and deadly disease. As a result of Georgia being included in the national emergency disease plan, the movement of all horses and members of the horse family will be stopped until they have been vaccinated for at least 14 days. Vaccine for Georgia horses is expected to be available this week. The vaccine and the veterinary service will be free as a part of the national program. The only equine movement that will be allowed is the transportation of horses for vaccination purposes. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin had previously placed an embargo against any horses entering Georgia from Texas or any states west of the Mississippi river. Go. Soybean Expo Planned Georgia's first soybean expo is scheduled to be held October 26, 1971, at the Rural Development Center in Tifton. Exhibits, a tour of soybean research plots and talks by researchers, extension specialists and outstanding growers are on the agenda, according to University of Georgia agronomists. The emphasis will be on the tremendous potential for growing soybeans in Georgia. Extimates show farmers planted 737,00 acres of soybeans this year. As recently as 1964 there were fewer than 100,000 acres of soybeans in the state. Production in 1970 totaled 11.9 million bushels and generated $34.5 million in cash farm receipts. Gardeners with a bit of imagination can visualize bright spots of color in tubs, planters on the terrace or patio, or in larger beds in the garden or landscape. Plants grown in containers or buckets are available from many retail outlets. A wide range or color is available as well as growth habits and flower types. BASIC S OF MUMS For the inexperienced gardener lets review a few of the basic principles of garden mum culture. First, mums develop and flower best when grown in full sun. These excellent garden plants are not really particular as to soil. However, for best quality a well drained fertile soil with plenty of organic matter would be ideal. If you are planting in a new flower bed, spend plenty of time spading or plowing until you have thoroughly worked the soil. Be sure to remove any rocks, unbroken clods or other debris. Thoroughly work in several inches of compost or peat moss or well rotted sawdust down to a depth of (Straight Line 10-12 inches. Two markets in one, wholesale and shed area, the Atlanta Farmer's Market is open 24 hours a day, 12 months a year. The recently added canning plant facilities for canning in glass offers the housewife all the necessary equipment for storing in glass. Recent beautification of the entrance through which thousands of cars and trucks pass each year adds contrast to the preformed cement structures as the world's largest market located off Interstate 75 near Forest Park. Mr. R. H. Smith, Carrollton, brings in a truckload of watermelons; Mr. T. P. O'Dell of Forest Park stands ready to sell a variety of fresh canned goods, produce and flowers. Mr. and Mrs. K. R. Sanders of Stonewall use the canning plant facilities at the market each year so they may enjoy good Georgia tomatoes year 'round. It grows horizontal rather than vertical and forms extensive evergreen ground mats in sandy, rather sterile soil. The glossy green leaves are shaped like a spatula, while the waxy reddishwhite flowers appear in clusters at the ends of the branches. Following these urn-shaped flowers are the bright-red, currant-size berries with tough skins and mealy pulp with five hard seeds. As a medicinal plant, however, bearberry is recognized not only by herbalists but by the medical profession. The leaves of the bearberry are the valuable part of the plant and should be gathered early in the autumn. Although they are thick and leathery, they need to be dried completely in a warm room. These dried leaves are astringent, tonic and diuretic having an antiseptic effect on the urinary passage. Despite their lack of appetite appeal, bearberries have considerable food value and could serve as a survival food in emergencies. August Gardening (Continued from page 1) clogged. Remember that mums need plenty of moisture. Take care in watering not to wet the foliage any more than is necessary. Also, try to water early in the day so the foliage will be as dry as possible during the nighttime hours. Watch the plants carefully to prevent any disease and insect problems. AUGUST REMINDERS August brings a time to freshen plantings of annuals such as petunias, salvia, marigolds, etc. Give them a light pruning to remove old flower heads to prevent seed development. Clean up stems that may have begun to look unsightly and fertilize the planting lightly. You should get several more weeks of color from properly maintained plantings of annuals. Perennials such as phlox, cannas, etc., will look better and be healthier if they are cleaned of old flower heads. One of our favorite summer shrubs, the crape myrtle, will continue to flower if old flowers are removed and seed formation prevented. They need close attention to prevent a build up of problems such as mildew or insects such as white fly. Healthy plants are a joy and will bring you more colorful displays. Extension Work Offers Variety Cooperative Extension work offers many exciting career opportunities for young men and women in virtually every subject matter discipline in agriculture and home economics. The Cooperative Extension Service is a major branch of the service function of the University of Georgia with a staff of professional, informal, adult and youth educators in counties throughout the state. In addition, on campus the Cooperative Extension Service has a faculty of subject-matter specialists, administrators, and supervisors that includes almost 125 people. Beginning with the early farm demonstration work of Dr. Seaman A. Knapp in 1903, the Cooperative Extension Service is the joint agency of the Land-Grant State U., the U. S. Department of Agriculture, and local county governments that has made the county agent a highly-respected public servant. The county agent and his female counterpart, the county extension home economist, continue to serve the diverse and growing needs of our ever-changing society through the application of technology emanating from the U.S.D.A.'s and the LandGrant State University's systems of research and education. The Georgia Cooperative Extension Service recruits from 50 to 60 young men and women each year in maintaining its professional staff of more than 560. Young men and women typically join the ranks of Extension workers in the positions of assistant county agent for men and assistant county extension home economist for women. Salaries for Extension workers are competitive with most other opportunities for professional employment that require equivalent training and preparation. Depending on background, preparation and experience, starting salaries for assistant county agent positions in Georgia range from $7,200 to $8,500. and starting salaries for assistant county extension home economists range from $6,700 to $8,000. Subject matter majors from virtually all the disciplines in agriculture, home economics and forestry are employed in the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. The Extension Education Department, a joint department of resident teaching and the Cooperative Extension Service, offers an undergraduate major in preparation for Extension work. The Extension Education Department also offers a curriculum leading to the Master of Agricultural Extension degree. It is the current policy of the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service to employ in assistant county agent positions only men with advanced degrees or who are admitted to the graduate school. Basic eligibility for employment therefore includes undergraduate grades acceptable for admission to the graduate school and satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination. Students planning careers in the Cooperative Extension Service are strongly urged to maintain better than B averages and to take the Graduate Record Examination in the spring quarter of their senior year. In-Service training and professional activities keep Cooperative Extension workers up-todate in their respective subjectmatter fields and allow them to improve themselves personally, professionally and academically. Would kudzu, without harm, shade the herb ginseng? J.L., Valdosta Kudzu will provide a shade for ginseng if kept up on a trellis. *** What are the white things all over my catalpa worms? We have five trees and have had lots of worms like these. Mrs. W.S., Decatur Our Entomology division advises that your worms are covered with coccoons from the Barconid wasp. These wasps lay their eggs in the worms, the eggs hatch into coccoons, crawl out of the worms and feed on the worms. The coccoons hatch into wasps, killing the catalpa worm. To keep the wasps down, destroy all worms with coccoons. Agricultural Calendar MEETINGS Aug. 9-10 - State Market Hog Show, Statesboro. August 14 - 9 AM - Central Ga. Cattlemen's Assn.
