FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner VOLUME 57 Carl Wheeler Foundation Seed Increases Yields Considerable attention has been given during the past 15 to 20 years to development and release of improved hybrids and varieties by the State Agricultural Experiment Station and the U. S. Department of Agriculture. To meet the needs created by the rapidly developing science of plant breeding, many states have established foundation seed stock programs to handle the increase and distribution of the foundation seed of these improved varieties and hybrids. In Georgia a non-profit or- ganization, known as Foundation Seeds, Inc. was chartered in 1957 with this goal as its objective. This organization has to do with the production and distribution of foundation seed stocks of all recommended hybrids and varieties of field and horticulture crops (Our guest columnist this week is Carl Wheeler, president of The Foundation Seed Inc., with offices in Athens and Dawson.) _________ released by the Experiment Stations and USDA Plant Breeders. Foundation seed are used for production of registered and certified seed. Every seed grower should plan his program so that he will plant foundation seed periodically. He should do this to avoid impurities of all kinds and also get the latest released hybrids and varieties. The primary objective of the program is to provide genetically and mechanically pure seed stocks through the registered and certified increase stages and ultimately to all Georgia farmers. Also, the aim and purpose of the foundation seed program is to implement commercial certified seed production. All foundation seed must meet high standards of purity and germination, and represent germ plasm distinctly superior to existing commercial varieties in one or more characteristics. Currently the foundation seed program is working with 18 to 20 crops which include many different varieties and hybrids. In 1970 a total of approximately 700 acres of foundation peanut seed were increased, along with 195 acres of soybeans, 180 acres of small grains and 13 acres of grain sorghum. Foundation Seeds, Inc. has a Board of Directors consisting of seven farmers and seed growers representing different crops who are keenly interested in the production and distribution of high quality seed. The program has been under the general direction of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with the Georgia Seed Development Commission and the Agriculture Experiment Stations, College of Agriculture. Wednesday, January 20, 1971 The value of crops in Georgia was up during 1970 by more than 17 percent of $68 million over 1969. The above pie graph shows the percentage contribution of each of Georgia's major crops to the total crop income. (Straight Line * ^^ ! v t When do you sow Bermuda onion seeds to get them to come up. J.V., Hartwell Sow in late winter or early spring. New seeds should be used every year as these lose their vitality fast and do not*c*o*me up if over a year old. Will mountain laurel and Canadian hemlock grow in Georgia soil and weather? T.U., Athens Both grow poorly this far south. B*e *su*re both have plenty of shade. Will you please tell me how to make white dogwood pink or red. Mrs. L.M., Dawsonville There is no way to change the color. Both of these other colors must come from a nursery. *** My husband raises hogs. Last year we had two butchered in a nearby town and it cost us 14 cents per pound. This year we would like to butcher our own but there is rumor going around that there is a law forbidding anyone to butcher beef or pork at home for their own use. Is this true? Mrs. R.R., Perry It is against the law to carry swine or beef to a slaughtering pen for processing unless the meat is inspected. However, there is a bill coming before the general assembly this session which may possibly change this law. There is no law against killing and processing y*o*u*r own meat at home. I would appreciate it if you could help me with two problems. One -- How do you get old cement off of used bricks, and two -- how do I remove either the fangs or poison sacs of a small rattlesnake? D.G.G., Smithville The first one is easy -- muratic acid and vinegar. This is available at hardware stores, building supply houses, etc. Now, that snake question - we first called the Game and Fish commission who referred us to the State Museum, who referred us to the biologist at Georgia State University who told us fangs could be broken out with forceps and a slit could be made behind the eyes and the sacs pulled out. However, he had never performed this little operation. He referred us to the Associate Curator of Reptiles at the Atlanta Zoo who informed us that they do not perform this operation at the zoo. It is against their policies. He said the only people who did this were circus and carnival people. Sorry, but we can't tell you exactly how to do this. NUMBER3 Crop Value Up In State 17 Percent The $477 million value placed on the principle crops produced in Georgia is 17 percent or $68 million above the 1969 crop value, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. Higher prices for most crops coupled with higher production in cotton, wheat, tobacco and peanuts more than offset lower production in corn, oats, peaches and pecans. Weather conditions were mostly favorable during growing season. Near ideal weather was a real aid at harvesting time. Georgia's peanut crop was the most important in value of production with a total of $145 million followed by tobacco with a value of $102 million. Corn ranked third in value. In July, the outlook was for a bumper corn crop in Georgia. The Southern Corn Blight reduced the corn production to a level less than produced during droughty 1969. However, the sharp increase in price per bushel pushed the value of production to $71 million or 10 percent above 1969. The cotton lint and seed value of production is placed at $37 million, however, when price support payments are added to this the level reaches $66 million. Soybeans had a slight increase in production but price per bushel increased sharply giving a 26 percent increase in value of production over previous years. The increased price per pound of peaches more than offset the reduced production to give a 12 percent increase in value of production. The following crops registered a reduction in value in 1970 compared with 1969: Oats, rye, sweet potatoes, all hay, all seed crops and pecans. Don't Ridicule The Dairy Goat Probably no class of domestic livestock is more subject to unjust ridicule, misunderstanding and prejudice than the dairy goat. Their comic strip portrayal as tin-can eaters has done much to create this image. Goat dairymen resent this because they know how discriminating the dietary habits of goats are. Goats have been domesticated for centuries. References in Genesis indicate their use early in the history of mankind. We recognize the milk cow in America and rightly so, but in many parts of the world dairy goats are kept and their milk more frequently used than the cow's. They adapt easily to ranging climatic conditions. In reality a dairy goat is a small (Continued on page 8) Page 2 We Get Letters Dear Editor: I have a large, heavy bag of quilting pieces that I would like to donate to a charitable organization. Page 8 THE MARKET BULLETIN Horses Of Georgia Beggar-tick (often called burmarigold, stick-tight, beggar-lice, boot-jack, or Spanish needles) is of the large genus Bidens, somewhat weedy herbs. They usually have divided or dissected leaves with toothed segments. The flowers are yellow with small, flat, two-pronged barbed fruit which is a familiar pest to woolen-clothed walkers. Beggar-tick is an easily cultivated annual. The seeds are sown in any ordinary garden soil and in late autumn moist ditches look as if sown with gold through their agency. The plant varies in height from five inches to three feet. If one were describing at tractive wild flowers, the beggartick would certainly be omitted, as its appearance is not prepossessing, and the small barbed seed vessels so cleverly fulfill their destiny in making one's clothing a means of con veyance as to cause all wayfarers to heartily detest them. "How surely the desmodium growing on some cliff-side, or the bidens on the edge of a pool, prophesy the coming of the traveller, brute or human, that will transport their seeds on his coat," writes Thoreau of this constantly encountered plant. The Dairy Goat (Continued from page 1) edition of a dairy cow. It is difficult to distinguish goat's milk from cow's except for it's whiteness. Goat milk is recognized as a health food. It is naturally homogenized, the fat globules are much smaller and do not readily rise, the curds are softer, smaller, and more digestible. It is recognized by many as beneficial for infants, stomach ailments, allergy, and asthma. Goats do have certain advantages. They are easily handled, can better adapt to limited facilities and two or more can supply the needs of an individual family on a year round basis. An average dairy goat, with proper care and feeding, will produce two to four quarts daily for extended periods while exceptional animals will produce over 4,000 Ibs. annually. The butterfat content ranges, with the individual and breed, similar to cow's milk from about 3% to over 7%. Breeds commonly kept for dairy purposes in the United States are the Saanen, Toggenburg, Alpine, Nubian and Lamancha. Personal preference and quality of the individual within the breed is usually considered of more importance than the breed itself when deciding what breed to keep. Palomino Although the Palomino is a breed only in a very restricted sense, it was included in the horse survey as a separate group. This appears to be the accepted practice for practically all bulletins and textbooks dealing with horses. The Palomino accounted for slightly over two percent or three thousand head of Georgia's horses and ponies. The palomino color originated in the United States around 1900. Western horsemen began noticing a (One in a series on Georgia horses. Information was compiled by Pat Parks of the Crop Reporting Service for use in the Georgia Horse and Pony Survey.) few foals of very pleasing colors of cream or yellow among their bands of horses. It is thought that some of the early Spanish horses contributed the recessive genes that occasionally produce these striking colors from parents of the more ordinary horse colors. The palomino color has shown up in Tennessee Walking Horses, Standardbreds, American Saddlebreds, American Quarter Horses and Morgans. It is not thought to occur in either the Arabian or Thoroughbred breeds unless there has been an addition of other bloods. Registration of Palominos is really a registration of individuals with a specific color pattern rather than a separate breed. At least six specific breeds register members of their breed with this color pattern in a special section of the stud book. There is also a separate registry for Palominos that was established in 1941. This makes it possible for many Palomino horses to be double registered once in their respective breed associations and once as Palominos. In addition to other requirements for registration as Palominos, the candidate horse's color must fall within a range of three shades lighter or three shades darker than a "newly minted gold coin." Because of their outstanding eye appeal, these horses are great favorites as parade horses. Stay Longer January Don't go, January. . . . Stay a while longer, I love your icy cold days. Your sit-by-the-fire kind With coffee and soup Find the greatest of pleasures I get in more ways. A good book to digest. . . With naps on the sly, And maybe some knitting for fun. For I know when it's over So much work will uncover I'll have no excuse but to get it all done. Marjorie L.
