FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner VOLUME 57 Robert Purr Farm Credit Bill Updates Banks It is a privilege on behalf of the Farm Credit Banks of Columbia to have this opportunity through Commissioner Tommy Irvin of sharing some thoughts with you that have vital implications to all of us who are interested in agriculture and agribusiness in Georgia. We have a keen interest in Georgia farming and its future. The i Federal Land ! B a n k of I Columbia and the II Federal Land it Bank Association II in Georgia have It over 15,000 loans ; outstanding in this state [amounting to I over $257,000,000. Likewise, the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank of Columbia and the Production Credit Associations in Georgia currently have more than 11,000 loans to Georgia farmers accounting for over $220,000,000. The third member of the Farm Credit family, the Columbia Bank for Cooperatives has over $69,000,000 invested in loans to Georgia purchasing, marketing, and supply cooperatives. A new farm credit bill has been introduced in Congress which would broadly update and modernize all (Our guest columnist this week is Mr. Robert A. Darr, Chairman of the Presidents' Committee of the Farm Credit Banks of Columbia.)______ three of these banking systems for even greater service to farmers. Farming is a fast changing industry, one of the great strengths of our nation. Today's farmers handle much larger investments, more acres and much more complex production and harvesting machinery and equipment than ever before. Our farm credit system needs to have legislative changes in order to keep up with these new developments and the increasingly larger capital needs of agriculture-money needs that will double by the end of this decade. That's why the new Farm Credit Act of 1971, recently introduced in Congress, can be an important step in keeping the farm credit system geared to the new needs of farmers and their cooperatives for the increasingly larger amounts of credit required in farming. Among other things, the new legislation would remove the restrictions that limit Federal Land Bank loans to 65 percent of appraised normal value, thus enabling the land bank to do more to help young farmers who are long on ability but short on capital. Other provisions would permit PCAs and Land Bank Associations to finance custom operators who do work for farmers. The proposed legislation would also make it possible for more co-ops to borrow from the Banks for Cooperatives by (Continued on page 8) Wednesday, July 7,1971 NUMBER 27 Horse Edition Tobacco Board To Meet; Coming Next Week Selling Time Opposed Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin looks over a tobacco field while traveling in south Georgia. Tobacco Advisory Board members will meet July 15 to recommend this year's opening date for flue cured markets. Straight Line Please advise if cows drinking from bath tubs as watering troughs are likely to suffer from lead poisoning. A.M., Columbus Veterinary division says no. Oldfashioned tubs made of iron have an enamel coating to prevent lead poisoning. **# Do moles have eyes? This has been a much discussed topic with us lately. Mrs. J.R., Tignall Mr. Jack Crockford of the Game and Fish Commission says they do. However, they are blind for all practical purposes as the eyes are very poorly deve*lo*p*ed. I would like to know if there is any danger in growing tomatoes next to roses. There is two or three feet between the roses and the tomatoes, I have heard that the insecticide from the roses will poison the tomatoes. L. S., Ft. Valley Our Plant and Entomology division advises that if you don't use an insecticide within one month of harvest the tomatoes will be safe to eat. Bangs Tested Cattle To Be Marked Yellow Beginning July 1 all veterinarians testing cattle at livestock auction markets have been requested to spray the forehead of all cattle that have tested negative to brucellois the day of the sale with yellow paint. This has been requested so that the farmer buying test eligible cattle will know that they have been tested and are negative to the brucellosis test conducted by the veterinarian at the livestock auction market. The yellow paint mark will give him the test status of cattle he buys at, the market. Eligible test cattle that are not so marked should be refused until they are tested negative. This will not apply to cattle bought by dealers for sale from one market to another unless they are accompanied by an individual test record showing a negative test within 30 days of movement. VALUABLE FOODS The latest national food consumption survey shows that only 12 cents of every food dollar went for flour, cereals and bakery products. Yet these foods, according to USDA, supplied 40 percent of the iron; 20 percent of the protein and riboflavin and more than 15 percent of the calcium in diets. The Georgia Tobacco Advisory Board will meet in Macon July 15 to recommend an opening date for flue cured tobacco markets this year. The meeting will be held at the State Farm Bureau Headquarters at 10 am. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has voiced strong opposition to action by the industry-wide Flue Cured Tobacco Marketing Committee which would cut the amount of selling time allocated to Georgia tobacco markets this year. Over objections of members from the Georgia-Florida belt, the industry-wide committee has voted to allow Georgia only enough selling time to dispose of some 154 million pounds of tobacco this year. Last year sufficient selling time was permitted to dispose of some 226 million pounds. The matter is further complicated by the fact there are some 12 million pounds of North Carolina tobacco carried over from last year, much of which is expected to be placed on Georgia markets when they open. Commissioner Irvin has advised J. Frank Bryant of Boonville, N. C., chairman of the industry-wide committee, that such action is discriminatory against Georgia growers and "completely unreasonable". He requested reconsideration of the action and is seeking ways to deal with the problem if relief is not granted. In the meantime members of the state Tobacco Advisory Board are surveying the crop situation in Georgia in an effort to determine the best time for opening this year's markets and will make recommendations to Commissioner Irvin at the Macon meeting. The Board is made up of Commissioner Irvin who serves as exofficio member and chairman of the board, five members of the General Assembly, the president of the Georgia-Florida Flue Cured Tobacco Warehouse Association, the president of the Georgia Farm Bureau and four tobacco farmers. Number Of Plants Effects Corn Yield In the South, the number of corn plants per acre may significantly effect yields during favorable seasons. But at the highest yielding plant population, narrow 20-inch row spacing probably does not. Preliminary research results suggest that Southern farmers should not exceed 20,000 to 24,000 plants per acre unless supplemental irrigation is available. Researchers also note that at the highest yielding plant population, the slight yield increase with 20-inch rows would not justify the investment in narrow-row equipment. In 1968, a favorable season, the best yield was about 100 bushels per acre with 24,000 plants per acre. Page 2 We Get Letters Dear Editor: Please help me find a flower called Cypress Spurge. It was used in American Parks and cemeteries during the Victorian days and is a short, plume-like plant 14 to 16 inches tall. The leaves are dark green and it has tiny yellow flowers. It looks something like "Butter and Eggs" but it isn't. I have looked everywhere for this but it must be known by a different name. I would appreciate any of your readers letting me know if they have this plant. Mrs. Beatrice Lusk Route 2, Box 229-A Rising Fawn, Georgia 30738 (Editor's note: Cypress Spurge is a hardy perennial and usually considered a weed. This is probably why many of our readers have not recognized this plant, although it is as common in some gardens as cockleburs.) Wednesday, July 7,1971 THE MARKET BULLETIN Page 8 9i Soul/km Ag Careers Agricultural Science Of Agronomy Calendar The magnolia is a genus of North America, West Indian, Mexican, and Asia and comprises about 50 species. The southern magnolia also known as the evergreen magnolia, bull-bay and big-leaved magnolia. It is one of the best-known trees in the State. It is of the family Magnoliaceae and the species Magnolia gran- diflora L. The "Southern Magnolia" excels all other trees in the combined beauty of the leaves and flowers. It occurs naturally in the rich moist soil on the borders of river swamps and pine-barren ponds and near-by uplands in the Coastal Plain, but has also been widely cultivated for ornamental value. It usually grows to heights of 60 to 80 feet and has a diameter of 4 feet at the trunk. The bark is gray to light brown. The leaves are evergreen, thick, leathery, elliptical or oval, dark mostly from 5 to 8 inches long and 2 to 3 inches wide. They remain on the trees for about 2 years. The flowers appearing at intervals during the summer have pure white petals surrounding a splash of bright purple in the center producing a sweet and pleasing fragrance. The fruit consists of a rounded or oval head from 3 to 4 inches long containing many seeds which open and display the bright red "berries" dangling. The wood is heavy and hard, and is usually a cream color. The wood is used for mostly ornamental purposes as in making furniture but is sometimes used as firewood. (Editor's note: Magnolia trees are now in bloom throughout the State. Some of the most beautiful ones are over a hundred years old and are located on our Capitol lawns.) Milk Testing More accurate screening of milk for abnormalities related to mastitis is now possible - assuring dairymen that milk won't be held off the market because of testing error. Mastitis, inflammation of a cow's mammary gland, costs U.S. dairy farmers $500 million annually in lost income, since it causes milk production to drop off and milk that is produced may not be marketable, explains ARS dairy scientist W. Donald Schultze. In the present quality control process, milk first goes through one of several screening tests to classify it as acceptable or doubtful. All the doubtful samples must then be further tested to determine their acceptability. Results within and between the screening tests, however, may be inconsistent, causing a wide range of error. Thus, many acceptable milks are subjected to a confirmatory test a waste of time and money. To Feed The People "A hungry world" is the prediction for the future from many experts. The prediction is a description for much of the world at present. The fact that one U. S. farmer can feed about 4 or 5 people is due in large part to the application of scientific principles to crop production and soil management. This is the science of agronomy. Bright, enterprising students are needed to apply rapidly increasing science and technology to the production of food for our increasing population and for export to foreign (Second in a series of careers in agriculture. Maximum economic production of crops and good use of soil and water resources are main concerns of agronomists. The need is growing, not decreasing, for people who understand crops and soils. Opportunities for agronomy graduates range from on-the-farm production to careers in agribusiness. 'The growing field of agricultural chemicals needs people qualified to work in the production and use of insecticides and herbicides. The seed and feed trade offers excellent opportunities for agronomy graduates. Advisory services such as the Agricultural Extension Service and the Soil Conservation Service need career agronomists. Further study toward the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees offers rewarding careers in research and teaching in agronomy. Sutdents majoring in agronomy have one of the most flexible curricula in the University System. They may take courses in the fundamental science of botany, ecology, genetics, plant pathology, entomology, geology, mathematics, physics and chemistry. A student is assisted in selecting his courses by a professor of the Department who acts as the student's advisor. The student and his advisor work very closely in preparing the program of study so that the student may major in one of the four concentration offered by the Department. The agronomy student may be trained for a variety of occupations from a farmer to an Extension Specialist. He may also obtain training that will prepare him for graduate school at the University of Georgia or other institutions. Many agronomy majors receive valuable training in their specific field of interest and earn part of their living expenses by working part-time in the Agronomy Research Program. Another form of aid for the agronomy student includes several undergraduate scholarships donated by the fertilizer and seed industries of the state. Mrs. E.K., Toomsboro Our Home Economist gave us three methods. 1-Apply Paste Wax with 3/ 0 steel wool; 2-Place a clean, thick blotter over the ring and press with a warm (not hot) iron. Repeat until the ring disappears; 3-Get an ounce of rottenstone from a paint or hardware store and keep it in an old salt shaker. Put a few drops of lubricating or salad oil on the blemish and shake on some rottenstone - enough to make a paste. Rub briskly with the grain of the wood, using a clean, soft cloth. Wipe frequently in order to compare and match the gloss of the damaged area with the original finis*h*. * I bought a package of petunia seeds and this is what came up. It doesn't look much like a petunia to me. How about you? J.W.R., Toccoa We were unable to identify the plant due to the damage in the mail, but it is not a petunia. *** There is excessive plant life in a lake near Cleveland. Is there an inexpensive way to control this growth in the swimming area? C.W.T., Commerce Our Plant and Entomology division advised that there are several types of plants with different herbicides used to control them. They suggest that you contact the Game and Fish Commission, tell them the types of plant life represented in your lake, and they wil*l *b*e able to give you a method of control. Can you give me a remedy for iron rust in clothes? I have a few new pieces that are ruined. Mrs. E.T.W., Pelham Our Home Economist advised the oxalic-acid method. Moisten stain with oxalic acid solution (1 tablespoon of oxalic acid crystals in 1 cup warm water). If stain is not removed by a single treatment, heat the solution and repeat. If stain is stubborn, place oxalic acid crystals directly on the stain. Moisten with water as hot as is safe for fabric and allow to stand a few minutes, or dip in hot water. Repeat if necessary. Do not use this method on nylon. Rinse article thoroughly. If allowed to dry in fabric, oxalic acid will cause damage. Caution: Oxalic acid is poisonous if swallowed* .* * Is elderberry foliage poisonous? Mrs. C.B., LaFayette The leaves, buds, young shoots, and roots are poisonous but the berries are not. Farm Credit (Continued from page 1) ' cutting the proportion of cooperative members who must be farmers from 90 percent down to a lower percentage. In addition, the Banks for Cooperatives could increase the ratio of debentures in relation to assets more than they can at present. This is legislation of great importance to every farmer borrower and it is deserving of your close attention and study. It is the best way we can gear up to the vast farm credit needs immediately ahead of us and we hope you will make your wishes known on this important matter to your Senators and Congressmen.
