FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner VOLUME 57 Wednesday, June 16,1971 NUAABER24 lag Black Horse Interest On The Increase What is the Georgia Horseman's Association? What does it do? These are the questions most often asked when I start talking about my favorite subject. They are pretty easy to answer. The membership of G.H.A. is made up of people in every phase of the horse industry -- from the man with the pony in the backyard for the kids, to the owners of the largest breeding farms in Georgia. Veterinarians, farriers, stable managers, race track managers and even people who are not part of the industry, but "just like horses" all belong to the G.H.A. and help to promote one of the largest single industries in Georgia. Any member club, group or breed association may send a delegate to the G.H.A. These delegates make up the Board of Directors. The slate of (Our guest columnist this week is lan Black, President of the Georgia Horsemen's Association, Route I, Stone Mountain, 30083.) officers include the president, vicepresident, secretary and treasurer. What the G.H.A. does or tries to do, can get a little bit more complicated. The simple answer is the protection of the industry through legislative action. This statement, however, does not fully cover our activities. Recognizing and then qualifying the problems facing Georgia horsemen before action becomes ineffectual or impossible, is part of our work. Getting this information and, together with a plan of action, presenting it to the membership must also be done. Are we successful? Not always, but our record includes several notable accomplishments like the state funded stabling facilities and adjacent trails at Hard Labor Creek State Park - results of a bill written and presented to the legislature by G.H.A. The equine bill, providing among other things, strict health laws pertaining to public sales and auctions of horses in Georgia, was also a G.H.A. supported action. So that is. what we are and what we are trying to do. If you participate in the horse industry in Georgia, we need your help and support. We believe you need ours. Individual membership is $5.00. Group or club membership is $15.00 But even more important than dues is your part in our activities. The next G.H.A meeting is scheduled for June 21 at 8:00 P.M. in the main auditorium of the new DeKaib county courthouse. Watermelon Salute Slated At Farmers Mart A traditional salute to one of the leading fruit crops of Georgia, the watermelon, will again be held at the Atlanta State Farmers' Market, Sunday, June 27. Some of the special events planned for the Ninth Annual Watermelon Day include a country and western show featuring Grand Ole Opry stars, a watermelon eating contest for children ages five to ten, an appearance by the National Watermelon Queen, Lynnette Loef- KIDS, WATERMELON AND THE QUEEN - 1971 National Watermelon Queen, Lynnette Loeffelman, 20, of St. Louis, Mo., gives tasty watermelon balls to children in a supermarket as she tours the country representing the watermelon industry. It just goes to show that "Watermelon Time is Fun-Time," which is the theme of the sponsoring National Watermelon Growers and Distributors Association. felman, and the Georgia Watermelon Queen (to be chosen June 25 in Cordele), and the ever famous contest to find the state's largest melon. Of course, all visitors receive free slices of melon between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The Ninth Annual Watermelon Dooly To Host Day is sponsored by the Atlanta Produce Dealers Association and the LOT OF TREES More than two out of every three acres of land in Georgia are growing tree crops. In fact, Georgia has the largest acreage of commercial forest land of any state east of the Mississippi River. Extension Service foresters say our state is second only to Oregon in total commercial forest area. SOYBEANS UP Based on the latest USDA survey of planting intentions, American farmers will seed about 46.5 million acres of soybeans this year. This is up seven percent from 1970. Georgia farmers indicate they will plant 737,000 acres of 'beans -- up 34 percent from last year. James Jackson, agronomist with the Cooperative Extension Service, says the market outlook at this time is excellent. THE MILK FLOWS Total miik production on Georgia farms last year is estimated at 1,197 million pounds. The State Crop Reporting Service says this is six '71 Cotton Day Cotton Promotion Day will be held July 14, 1971 at the Campground near Vienna, Georgia. This is an annual event and is held in the Georgia County producing the most cotton the previous year. Dooly County has held that honor for the past several years. The program will begin at 11:00 AM and will be featured by speakers, a band, a barbecue lunch, awards of prizes to the champion cotton growers of 1970, and a beauty review with the selection of the Cotton Queen for 1971. Featured speakers will be Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin and the President of the Georgia Farm Bureau, Emmett Reynolds. Therefore, it does not correct soil acidity immediately after it is applied. For best results, lime should be applied three to four months before planting time, according to agronomists with the Georgia Extension Service. :' Water is leaking from my fish pond through a fault in the earth, beneath the dam. Do you know of any substance that I can put in the water that will seal the fault and still not hurt the fish or plant life? People interested in catfish production and marketing are The plant people told us that there is no way to tell if the vines planted from seed will bear fruit as the vines could be either male or female. Pages 91 Milk is an opaque white, yellowish, or bluish liquid secreted by the mammary glands of female mammals for the nourishment of their young. It provides a complete and adequate diet for the very young of its own species. There a re several types of milk, all of them widely available: whole milk, skim milk, and dried milk. Whole milk is available pasteurized, homogenized, fortified, and with chocolate flavoring added. Pasteurized Milk: Milk which has been heated to kill any harmful bacteria and then cooled immediately to 50 degrees F. or lower. Homogenized Milk: Pasteurized milk in which the particles have been broken up and evenly distributed throughout the milk by a mechanical process. The cream does not rise to the top and homogenized milk forms a softer curd in the stomach and is more easily digested. Fortified Milk: Pasteurized milk containing added amounts of one or more of the essential nutrients present in milk, usually Vitamin D. Low-sodium milk is also available for special diets. Evaporated Milk: Homogenized whole milk from which about 60% of the water has been removed by heating. Condensed Milk: Milk made by evaporating a mixture of whole milk and sugar. Sugar accounts for 40 to 45 per cent of the final product. Skim Milk is fresh milk from which some fat has been removed. It is available as fluid skim milk, buttermilk, fortified skim milk, and flavored milk drinks. Fluid Skim Milk: Made of whole milk from which some fat has been removed. The milk fat remaining usually varies from 1 to 2 per cent. Buttermilk: Milk to which a lactic-acid-producing culture is added. Butter granules may be added to enhance the flavor. Fortified Skim Milk: Skim milk to which vitamins, including vitamin C, and minerals are added. Flavored Milk Drinks: Skim or partly skim milk to which cocoa and sugar or chocolate syrup has been added. Available in liquid form and also as a dry instant powder. Skim milk is also available as nonfat dry milk particles. It is made by removing water and fat from fresh fluid whole milk and is reconstituted as skim milk by the addition of water. Milk and cream when received in the home should be refrigerated immediately. A storage temperature of 40 degrees F. is most desirable to protect flavor and freshness of these products. Milk stored at this temperature has a refrigerator shelf life of 3 to 4 days. Cultured milk products have refrigerator shelf life of 10 to 14 days. Canned milk products have a kitchen shelf life of one year. Canned refrigerator shelf life (opened) of 10 days, THEMARKET BULLETIN Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin, left, receives a selection of steaks and a photograph of U.G. Prototype, a University of Georgia research steer which was named 1970 International Grand Champion. Presenting the steaks is Dr. Robert Scarth, U. Ga. animal scientist who produced the world champion. U.G. Prototype came from a research herd at the Northwest Georgia Branch Experiment Station at Calhoun. He was a Charolais-Angus crossbred and averaged 125 pounds more at market weight than straightbred steers. Straight Line > (Coantinued from page 1) ^^ they enter through the back door. Mrs. D.R.G., Helen Sorry, but your spider was a greasy spot by the time we got it. However, if you will send us another one we will be most happy to identify it. *** RESPONSE In your "Straight Line" column of June 2 there was a question about poppies and heroin. Please be advised that it is illegal according to Federal Statues to grow the old peony flowered and carnation flowered poppies as they are the source of Opium and from which opium and heroin is made. The Shirley, Iceland, and Perennial Oriental poppies are not illegal and may be grown for ornamental purposes without restriction. The illegal poppies from which opium is derived must have the seed pods slashed, rather than the seeds themselves. Trusting this correction will be helpful to your readers as the writer has noted some of the old carnation and peony flowered poppies growing occasionally, for ornamental purposes of course, but still it is illegal according to federal laws. D.M.H., Atlanta Thank you, Mr. D.M.H. We checked this out further and you are correct.
