FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner VOLUME 57 Wednesday, May 26,1971 NUMBER21 Emmett Reynolds Farm Bureau's New Programs The 60,000 farm family members of the Georgia Farm Bureau Federation, actively seeking to enlarge opportunities for the farm community, are displaying a highlevel interest in several marketing development proposals and studies now underway by Farm Bureau. Georgia is the leading state in the nation with a marketing problem on spent hens. Georgia leads the nation in total egg production and is second in commercial egg production, This describes the potential that exists i n marketing to convert this high quality meat into useful purposes, and bring added returns to Georgia's egg flock owners. The marketing activity would entail the marketing of hens after they have finished egg production, and bring order into marketing efforts in this area. The Board of Directors has already given the go-ahead in market research work in this area, and the (Our guest columnist this week is Emmett Reynolds of Arabi, Get., president of the Georgia Farm Bureau Federation.)__________ activity is currently in the marketing sign-up period for flock owners. Regional headquarters with Farm Bureau's Marketing Association in several states, each cooperating in such a program, is expected to be located in the $1 I/ 2 million modern headquarters building nearing 'completion in Macon. Marketing research studies are currently underway by Farm Bureau's Marketing Association for programs in commercial livestock and dairy heifer replacement. Farm Bureau already has underway marketing project activities in broilers designed to strengthen economic opportunity for the total industry. Much work has been ac-i complished in broiler marketing. Farm Bureau has lent it's support in favorable referendums conducted by peanut, tobacco, cotton, sweet potatoes, apples, milk, peaches and egg producers to continue research, promotion, and educational emphasis in each of these areas. Farmers in Farm Bureau realize that we must drive forward to open new horizons and opportunities in Georgia agriculture. These programs are indicative of the forward thrust underway to increase in large scale the current $1.2 billion annual level of gross returns to Georgia farmers. Production efficiency is a must and efforts in this area must continue, but developments are certain to come in marketing techniques. Farm Bureau has just completed a successful six weeks of activity in obtaining favorable action by state (Continued on page 8) Dairy Plans for June, Dairy Month, are already underway by the Georgia dairy industry. To kick off the festivities, a special "Dairy Night" is being held at Six Flags Over Georgia, Friday, May 28, from 5:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. See page 2 for your special pass. Straight Line Can you tell me what the enclosed fly is and if it will harm my apple tree? I have a young apple tree and have found several of these flies dead on the buds. R.W., Toccoa Our Entomology division advises that this fly will not harm your tree. The fly sticks itself to the tree and then dies. *** How do I care for an Easter lily after the blooms drop? Also, when is the best time to prune camellias and azaleas? Mrs. T.L.A., Elberton Keep the lily in a pot, water it regularly and fertilize with 8-8-8. The lily may be planted outside if you desire. Prune camellias and azaleas just after bloom. *** What will kill lice in my fish worm bed and not kill the worms? P.O., Patterson The Game and Fish Commission advised that you should water the beds well and then use dusting sulphur on top. This will not harm the worms. *** I have trouble with potted chrysanthemums that are grown in green houses. When put in the yard, they live and bloom for one year and then die. Mrs. R.P., Jefferson The chrysanthemum man told us that these plants are not cold hearted and do not live outside. I know vining okra is an edible gourd but do not know the botanical name. Can you help? Mrs. S.M., Forsyth Luffa is the botanical name. *** Can you identify the spider I enclosed? Is it harmful. Mrs. L.J., Griffin The spider was a jumping spider of the attidae family. It is not harmful and chases its prey instead of making webs. We mailed you a pamphlet which should be helpful. *** Are dandelion greens edible, do they have any food value, and how do you cook them? F.C.B., Atlanta Our Home Economist says they are edible, are a good source of vitamin A, and are prepared as any other greens are. The height of ambition for most gardeners and homeowners is an attractive lawn. Not just an everyday lawn but a lawn that is green year-round and requires little attention. Sorry, folks, that type lawn is not available yet. Even Astroturf has its problems. Gardeners in north Georgia can come fairly close to the year-round green lawn. Temperatures and rainfall are more conducive to continuing growth and development of the so-called cool season grasses. South Georgia In the southern part of the state gardeners for the most part find they must be content with an attractive green lawn during the warm season. Cool season grasses such as fescue, bluegrass, and the cool season mixtures can't seem to survive the seasonal extremes of temperature and rainfall. South Georgians find the hybrid Bermudas, zoysia and centipede to be better choices even if they remain green only during the summer. Gardeners with Bermuda lawns have a slight advantage over others in that the Bermuda lawns can be overseeded with Italian Rye Grass for a green winter lawn. For such purposes rye grass js seeded at the rate of five to ten pounds per 1,000 square feet. It's good to remember that when rye grass is used to over- Continued on page 8) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, May 26, 1971 We Get Letters John Deere A model tractor, good 2 Wisconsin gas motors, 15 hp, mechanical cond., good tires, $40Q.
