FARMERS & CONSUMERS Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Market Bulletin VOLUME 57 Wednesday, May 12,1971 NUMBER 19 Frank Welton Ga. Agriculture Must Come First Bark Beetle Family Harms Georgia Lawn, Shade Trees Only thirteen other states produce more agricultural products than does Georgia. But, as I talk with travelers who stop in motels and restaurants along the Interstates, these questions are often asked. Is there any farming done in Georgia? Or, where is the farming done? Is Georgia a big agricultural state? Where can I go to see peanuts growing? Do you still grow cotton in Georgia? What does a tobacco plant look like? These may be familiar questions to many of you. Yet, many more of us may not be aware that most travelers through our state are not cognizant of the agricultural giant within our boundaries. Are you? Georgia has become one of the most progressive agricultural states in the country. Net farm income has risen nearly 50 percent more per farm in the past ten years than has the average of the other states. Georgia farmers have taken advantage of (Our guest columnist this week is Frank Welton, Executive Director of Georgia Agribusiness Council, Inc., 19 Hunter Street, S.W., Atlanta, 30334.) modern technology more readily than in some other parts of the country. And, I believe we will continue to innovate and utilize modern technology in our farm production units. We don't want to make the mistake of hiding our light under a bushel. It is imperative that we allow visitors and native Georgians alike to savor the delights of watching an industry grow in stature. We also want to preserve the mysticism that has resulted from the tremendous efficiency of the American and Georgia farmer. We want our visitor to stand in awe as he views a field with rows as straight as fiddle strings - make him wonder how it all comes about. It is important to you that the 45 people you supply with food and fiber understand that agriculture must come first in all considerations. Because only after we are fed can we pursue other vocations or avocations. Maybe you have a good idea as to how we can best show-off Georgia agriculture. If so, let us hear from you. Write Georgia Agribusiness Council, Inc., 19 Hunter Street, S.W., Atlanta, 30334. FEET HURT? Ninety percent of adult women and ten percent of adult men have developed foot problems by the time they are 15 years old. The cause? Ill fitting shoes and too short hoisery. County Extension home economists have information on proper fit and the importance of good shoe construction. Give them a call. Georgia pines, regardless of location, are subject to infestation by one or more of the pine bark beetles. The pine bark beetle family is responsible for most Spring Means Poison of the pine mortality around home sites. The three most common examples are the black turpentine, Ips, and Southern Pine beetles. Plants, Sick Cattle Almost everyone is short of feed this time of year. In addition, some poisonous plants ~ such as water hemlock - start growing in moist areas of pastures. These plants may be the only available green material for the cows. It only takes a bite or two of water hemlock to cause violent and painful convulsions -- and death. It has been said that a piece of hemlock root about the size of a walnut is enough to cause the death of a cow. The first sign of hemlock poisoning in cattle is generally frothing at the mouth, followed by pain and uneasiness. Later there may be violent convulsions during which the cow kicks and sometimes extends the legs rigidly while bellowing and groaning. In fatal cases convulsions grow more violent until death. Treatment of infected animals is often unsatisfactory. About all you can do is control the convulsions and help the animal eliminate the poison by the use of a purgative. The best way to prevent this type of poisoning is to observe all lowland pastures regularly for the presence of the poisonous plant, or move the animals out of pastures that contain low and moist swampy areas. Cattle usually will not eat hemlock if there is adequate food available. Shop Carefully For "Specials" Shopping for low priced advertised specials can be rewarding -if one shops wisely. However, these specials are often used to attract buyers and may sound too good to be true. Buyers should be on the lookout for advertising such as "buy now or you won't be able to get it at all" or "limited time only". If told the item has been sold out or really wouldn't be satisfactory when asking for the special, be leery. The next step may be the substitution of a much higher priced item or items. This is known as "bait and switch" advertising. To avoid "bait and switch" advertising, be a comparison shopper. Ask questions to be sure the salesman is knowledgable about his product. Look over the market to get an idea of what comparable products cost. Armed with this knowledge, you will be better able to make intelligent decisions while shopping wisely. MEAT EXPLOSION Per person use of red meat in 1971 once again is heading for a new high, according to the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Last year it was a record 185.5 pounds -- 3.5 pounds above per capita consumption in 1969. Well over half of that amount was beef. (Straight Line) x ^^^ : Is it harmful to eat cracked eggs? Is there anything that forbids the sale of cracked eggs? Mrs. F. M., Collins Our Poultry division advises that cracked eggs (or henfruit) are not harmful if cooked done before eating. They should not be eaten raw. Cracked eggs cannot be sold in retail stores.* * * I have some chains that I would like to remove the rust from. How can I do it- and keep them from rusting again? Mrs. J.W.J., Thomaston The largest of the Georgia pine bark beetles is the black turpentine beetle. This beetle, found most frequently around home construction, infests the pine tree from the ground level up to a height of approximately 10 feet. The first symptom of attack is usually the appearance of pitch tubes (blobs of resin), the size of a quarter, on the tree's trunk. The adult beetle bores a small entrance tunnel through the bark to the tree's cambium layer. The gum flow is heavy in this Black Turpentine area which r causes the accumulation of gum around the entrance to form pitch tubes. Here, an elongated, egg tunnel, one-half inch or wider, is constructed Southern Pine parallel with wood grain. The new adults emerge in about 2-3 months after the eggs are deposited. The two remaining insects, the Ips (I/ 8 to I/ 4 inch in length) and the southern pine beetles (about I/ 8 of an inch in length) infest the complete length of the tree trunk. They are not restricted to the base of the tree as the black turpentine beetle. The southern pine beetle is usually more aggressive than the Ips beetle. However, the symptoms and Ips Engraver control methods are similar. The pitch tubes, caused by both insects, are about the size of a dime, and in (Continued on page 8) Georgia Poultry On The Increase To remove rust, scour with an abrasive or steel wool. Kerosene also helps. Preparations to remove and prevent the formation of rust on iron and steel can be purchased at hardware stores. I have some lizards in my shrubbery which change their color. I would like to know of something that will get rid of them. Mrs. E.H.M., Omega The Game and Fish Commission advises that the lizards are Chameleons, and are very beneficial. They live on insects that damage your shrubbery. The only method of eradication is to kill them by hand when you see them. However, they strongly advise against this as they keep shrubbery insect-free. Control of Marek's disease in Georgia poultry may result in healthier laying flocks and an increasing rate of lay. Egg output per hen has been above year-earlier levels since last November and likely will continue higher throughout most of 1971. Replacement of large numbers of older birds by pullets has resulted in younger and more productive flocks. In addition, fewer hens have been force molted in recent months. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, May 12,1971 We Get Letters Dear Editor: I would like to share this with your readers - I just happened to pick up a table fork and started seeding cherries and it turned out to be the finest thing ever to pit them with. It is indifferent to shade or sun and is readily in- creased by root-division. It flowers in the late summer and fall and is sometimes listed under the name of Mondo ja onicum which is an allied, m 'e tender genus. Both are co imonly called Lily turf. Two species of Liriope ge arally grown in this state are Li iope muscari, the clump type, ar i Liriope spicata, which is Creeping Liriope. The Creeping Lir ; ope has a green leaf slightly smaller than the Liriope muscari, and has a habit of spreading rapidly from underground shoots. The leaves of Liriope muscari are nearly 18 inches long and about 1/2 inches wide. The flowers are lilac-purple with the stalk of the flower cluster being about as long as the leaves. There are several varieties of Liriope muscari; some withstanding full sun better than others. Some of the more popular ones are Big Blue Liriope (shade best), Gold Banded Liriope (sun or shade), Lilac Beauty Liriope (shade best), and variegated Liriope (sun or shade). Liriope is often used as a ground cover and also as a border grass along side walks, around the bases of trees, or the foun- dation of houses and other buildings. Bark Beetle Family (Continued from page 1) many cases, are inconspicuous to the homeowner. The appearance of pitch tubes and the yellowing needles are generally the first symptoms of the Ips and southern pine beetles. These beetles kill the tree by constructing galleries in the tree's cambium layer, which girdle the conductive tissues. Both beetles require only 3-6 weeks to complete their life cycle. There are case histories that show trees can be saved if treatment is started within a few days after the initial infestation. In most cases, it is advisable to cut the infested tree and dispose of the wood. The prevention of black turpentine beetle infestations is much simpler than that of the Ips and southern pine beetles. To guard against black turpentine beetle infestations and prevent injury to the trunk and roots, fertilize and water weakened trees, and spray the base of the tree up. to a height of 10-12 feet with a recom- mended solution. The prevention of Ips and southern pine beetle infestations is more difficult. Recommendations include pruning in the late fall and winter, never allow anyone to climb trees with climbing spurs and keep pines thinned where they will have ample room to grow. The black turpentine, Ips and southern pine beetles, will not infest any species except pine trees. For additional information, contact your local county forestry unit, or your county agent. Pressing Flowers A Creative Art Pressed flowers, a creative and old-fashion favorite, is becoming more popular than ever. Although it does take time and patience, the result is very rewarding. enough to accomodate the laid-out flowers, enough white blotting paper to cover the board twice, some white facial tissue, a small amount of silica gel, a plastic bag large enough to hold the board and its flowers, and a few bricks, books, or large rocks. Place a layer of blotting paper on the board; then cover it with a thin layer of silica gel. Spread two layers of tissue over the silica gel and then lay the flowers on this making sure that they are not touching each other. Apply tissue, silica gel and blotting paper. This is then placed inside the plastic bag and weighted with bricks or other objects. Seal the end of the plastic bag with masking tape, excluding as much air as possible. At the end of one week, remove the pressed blossoms and store them in tissue paper in suitable containers until you want to convert them into decorations for greeting cards, wall plaques, or bookmarks. Collect fresh plant material, flowers, and leaves. Even small stems and roots may be used if they are not too thick. Remember that the best flowers for pressing are those that are naturally flat such as pansies and African daisies. They should be picked at their prime, and it is best to remove the stems before pressing. To press flowers you will need the following materials: a board large Landscaping Aids Georgia's Beauty Georgia can boast of many beautifully landscaped areas. Even the famed Peachtree Street is not without its share of flowers and trees. This is one of the many things that has kept our state and capitol city beautiful. One area of our state where unusual landscaping is most beautiful is the Six Flags Over Georgia property west of Atlanta. There are some 120,000 plants placed throughout the park, in beds, along banks, in planters, and in hanging baskets. Spring planting includes a variety of annuals, which are sustained throughout the summer by regular feedings and waterings. In late September, hearty cool-weather plants such as mums replace the summer landscape. During the winter months the fragile summer plants are carried into greenhouses to be pruned and nourished for the coming season. The two men responsible for the care and upkeep of the vast gardens are Wayne Mings, landscape supervisor, and Frank Blackburn, greenhouse manager. In areas requiring a full, lush Acreage Payments Must Meet Standards Farmers enrolled in the feed grain, wheat or cotton programs should make sure that acreage used for set-aside must meet certain qualifications. Primarily, it should be land of at least average cropland productivity for the farm. A mistake in the acreage can reduce program payments. For a small charge to cover the cost, county ASCS offices will measure a farm's set-aside acreage. If you have questions about your set-aside acreage, cheek with your county ASCS office before certification. Ga. Watershed Tops In Nation The Bull Creek watershed in Muscogee county has been named as the outstanding small watershed in the United States by the National Watershed Congress. The Congress, a forum made up of 27 of the nation's leading industrial, agricultural, and conservation organizations, will present the award at the annual meeting June 7 at Tampa, Florida. This is the second time a Georgia watershed has been so designated. In 1965 the Little Tallapoosa River watershed was named "Watershed of the Year". The selection is made on the basis of nominations submitted by state conservation committees from over the nation. Time Savers For Spring background, a basic combination of banana trees, elephant ears, and split leaf philodendron is used. The banana trees give height and grace, the elephant ears provide groundwork, and the philodendron fills in. Banana trees require special care in the Georgia climate. Each November, they are taken to the greenhouses, all soil shaken from the roots, the roots pruned, any frostdamaged portions of the plant removed, and the plants placed in large tubs and baskets for the winter. The extra effort paid off last summer when the trees produced fat, yellow fruit. Over 700 hanging baskets, measuring 26 inches across and about 10 inches deep, are an added attraction. They are lined with moss, and are composed primarily of ferns, coleus, lobelia, marigolds, ageratum, caladiums, geraniums, and ivy. To brighten your winter-dulled windows, wash with a little ammonia in a pail of warm suds. Use a sponge to wash the panes. Crumpled newspaper creates a sparkling, streak-free finish. An old toothbrush or cotton swabs make quicker work of corner cleaning. Before washing walls, test the paint or finish making sure it is washable. Use a sudsy sponge to wipe a small section in the corner. If this area appears cleaner, it is safe to go ahead and wash the entire wall. Clean smoke stains on brick or stone fireplaces by covering the stain with a paste of concentrated ammonia and powdered pumice. Let paste remain about 2 hours, then scrub with hot water. Use a good grade of furniture polish on porcelain kitchen appliances and cabinets. This protects them from scratches, finger marks and grease. Gardeners-Beware Of Treated Seeds Treating seeds has come a long way since the Middle Ages, when seeds were thrown through fires to control disease organisms. Today, seeds are treated with chemicals to prevent damage by insects, fungi and bacteria. If misused, most of these chemicals also are potentially harmful to animals and humans. Although lawn seeds ordinarily are not treated, home gardeners should note that many vegetable seeds, such as sweet corn, often are treated with toxic substances to help insure successful growth. These seeds should be handled with care and the unused portion destroyed immediately.
