FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner VOLUME 57 Robert HelMq Ag Engineering Vital To Georgia Mechanization of Georgia agriculture has raised the standard of living for both the farmer and consumer and agricultural engineering has made a major contribution to this transition. Most Georgia agricultural engineers are members of the Georgia Section of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE), which unites them for the purpose of promoting and broadening the usefulness of agricultural engineering. The Georgia Section ASAE meets in the fall and spring to discuss and to report progress in solving agricultural en- gineering problems. It also meets with the International Organization of ASAE in December and June and participates in the activities of the Society. Many of the offices, and chairs of technical committees of ASAE are held by Georgia members. These committees act on matters which directly affect Georgia agriculture (Our guest columnist this week is Robert Hellwig, Chairman, Georgia Section ASAE, Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, 31794.) such as the establishment of standards for tractors and other farm equipment. Awards are given annually by ASAE to members making outstanding contributions to agriculture and several Georgia members have been recipients of these awards. The Georgia Section ASAE works closely with the Agricultural Engineering Department at the University of Georgia, Athens, and awards an annual scholarship to the outstanding freshman student in Agricultural Engineering. The quality of the University of Georgia students is evidenced by the Student Branch ASAE international competition. This annual award is for the outstanding Student Branch of ASAE and Georgia students have placed first twelve times in the last fifteen years, including 1970. At the 1970 Winter Meeting a University of Georgia student received the award for the outstanding junior student in agricultural engineering in the United States. Other activities include: the promotion of farm safety programs, the promotion of needed research, career guidance for students, and programs to encourage professional registration of agricultural engineers in the state of Georgia. Agricultural engineers are well represented throughout the state, serving in responsible positions in industry, farming, teaching, research and extension. Wednesday, April 28,1971 NUMBER 17 Go. Forms Three Dairy Cattle Tops New Commissions Three new commodity commissions have recently been formed in Georgia. These are for honey, soybeans and pecans. Producers of these three commodities are vitally interested in the promotion and development of their product and feel that the commodity commission program is the best approach. Georgia presently has eight commissions involved in the promotion, education and research of peanuts, tobacco, cotton, peaches, apples, sweet potatoes, milk and eggs. All existing commissions have recently been re-affirmed for three years. In Feedlot Trials Holstein cattle, whose top production has long made them popular in milking parlors, have also made a good showing in feedlots. Facing formidable competition from beef and dairy breeds, Holsteins were first for rate of gain in ARS feeding trials. Holstein, Jersey, Milking Shorthorn, Angus, and Hereford steer calves were included in the trials, with half of the cattle from each breed on a high and half on a low plane of nutrition from birth to 180 days. The high-plane diet included large quantities of whole milk; low plane was typical for rearing dairy heifers, using milk replacer, grain, and hay. Inside P*yes? Letters ----------------. Page 2 Recipe of Week -- --------- Page 5 What Is? ---------------- Page 8 Ag Calendar------------ Pages Holsteins prove dairy steers can be profitably fed to feeder or market weights, thus offering an additional source of income for the dairy farmer. ifcSa&i^figSSS: SSSf^gS^SSSS:^^ At 181 days, the calves were divided by breed and previous treatment into three groups and fed free choice: finishing ration; chopped hay mixture; or chopped hay until -.five-sixths of slaughter weight, then finishing ration to slaughter. Research was conducted by animal scientists at Beltsville, Maryland. Ii Straig^ht Line 1 Will you please tell me how to remove stains from ivy that has grown on an asbestos outside wall. Mrs. L.P., Georgetown Wash the wall with a solution of muratic acid or trisodium phosphate, using a very stiff brush. *** What will kill wild onions? Can I eat them? Mrs. E.C.G., Americus 2,4-D will get rid of the onions. They may be eaten. *** What will get rid of ants in my kitchen and bathroom? Mrs. B.D., Oxford Our Entomology division advises using Chlordane spray or ant traps, available at your local feed and seed store or hardware store. *** Is there a safe way to get rid of mosquitoes from under an old house other than spreading old motor oil over the ground; a powder for instance. J.S., Campton Our Entomology division advises spraying with DDVP. However, unless you eliminate the breeding place, you will continue to be bothered by them. Look for rusting cans, leaking drain pi*p*es*, etc. and eliminate. When buying fertilizer, I noticed the hundred pound bag seemed too light. It was weighed by the seller and was found to lack from four to six pounds per hundred weight. Is that legal? B.D.M., Trion No, it is not legal. We have referred your letter to our fertilizer people for action. They should have this corrected by now. *** I have a dusk-to-dawn security light in my garden. Will it harm my garden vegetables? D.M., Wadley Our Plant people advise that the light has to be close, usually 18 inches, to affect plants with the exception of some florists' crops, such as mums or poinsettias. *** What will get rid of cattails in a pond and when should I fertilize the pond? W.D.F., Lyerly Dalapon will control the cattails. Your pond should be fertilized when the water warms up, usually in late April. Holsteins gained fastest in both phases of the trials. They also had the largest rib-eye area (meaty portion of a rib cut) and highest percentage of lean meat and bone of any breed in the study. Beef breeds produced the most fat; Holsteins, the least. Jerseys and Angus were most tender by taste panel scores. At equal slaughter weights, Holstein steers will not grade as high as beef breeds because of lack of fat. While they can reach live weights of 1,000 pounds in about a year, they may need toreach 1,400 pounds to add extra fat for higher grade. That extra fat might be too expensive to make it pay. Producers should weigh possible grade discrimination against faster rate of gain before deciding. Dairy steers from the larger breeds can be profitably fed to feeder or market weights. Thus, a dairy beef enterprise can offer an additional source of income for dairymen if they have extra labor, feed, and facilities availableover and above those which are necessary for normal dairy operation. Meat from dairy cows and bulls has always been used for processed meats and hamburger, and there is every reason to believe that dairy beef will continue to supply a sizable proportion of beef cuts in the future, especially with consumer preference for more lean. Know? U. S. Department of Agriculture animal researchers at Beltsville, Maryland have found that feeding ground newsprint to cattle can replace some forage in the animal rations. The newsprint does not have any adverse effects and serves well as a roughage substitute. Additional molasses makes the reading material more palatable. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, April 28, 1971' We Get Letters Dear Editor: I have a beautiful collection of African violets that look quite healthy except for the bottom leaves. These are the biggest and should be the prettiest leaves of all but they just hang limp over the edges of the pot. I would be interested to know if other readers have the same problem and what they have done about it. Name withheld Athens, Georgia (Editor's note: When African violets come in contact with clay flowerpot rims, this often happens. Cut a narrow strip of foil and fold it over the rim or dip the rim in melted paraffin. Be sure the pot is clean and dry before dipping; remove and allow paraffin to harden.) All domesticated varieties of lettuce belong to the species Lactuca sativa Linnaeus. The genus Lactuca is a member of the sunflower or thistle family. It is believed that lettuce is native to the Mediterranean and Near Eastern centers of origin of cultivated plants. Both wild and cultivated lettuces are found in the Near East. Lettuce appeared at the tables of the Persian kings about 550 B.C. and is thought to have been used for medicinal properties as a food plant. Lettuce is the most important salad plant grown in the nation. It is generally grouped into five classes: Crisphead or Iceberg, Butterhead, Romaine, Leaf, and Stem. Iceberg lettuce is the major type used. The heads are large, round, and solid, with outer leaves medium-green and inner leaves a lighter green. This lettuce is good served alone or in combination with other greens, vegetables, or fruits as well as with meat, poultry, and fish salads. Butterhead lettuce, which includes the Big Boston and Bibb varieties, has a smaller head than Iceberg. It is slightly flat on top and has soft, tender, pale inner leaves that are oily or buttery to the feel. It is excellent in tossed green salads and as garnishes, but is too soft to combine with fruits and vegetables. The small leaves of Bibb lettuce are a salad by themselves with a French or Russian dressing. Romaine lettuce plants are tall and cylindrical with crisp, folded, dark-green leaves. It retains its crispness in tossed salads and is famous for its use in Caesar Salad made with a special dressing and garlic-flavored croutons. Leaf lettuce has broad, tender, succulent, fairly smooth leaves that vary in color depending on the variety. Leaf lettuce is very delicate, and is used in a spring salad bowl combined with other greens, carrot curls, chopped green onions, and tossed with Italian dressing. The edible part of stem lettuce is the enlarged part of the stem, or seedstalk. It may be peeled and eaten raw, boiled, stewed, or creamed. This lettuce is used in many Chinese dishes. After purchasing your favorite type of lettuce, discard any bruised leaves. Wash the greens thoroughly and dry them well before refrigerating. To obtain whole leaves of Iceberg lettuce, cut or twist out the core and run water through it to loosen the leaves. Drain well on paper towels. For tossed salads, tear greens into bite-size pieces. For other uses cut lettuce into wedges or shred it with a sharp knife. THE MARKET BULLETIN for sale Horse compost, free, you haul. J. C.
