Consumers Get For sPrmg Horse | Additional Protection Is Concerned Each of us must be concerned with the necessities of life. These include food, clothing and shelter. We must also be concerned with the safety of man involving such things as safe and adequate water, clean air, a productive and safe soil, sanitation and disease and pest control. Today's farmer is concerned with all of And The Georgia food consumer will be provided additional protection July 1. The new Egg Products Inspection Act, effective July 1, will assure the consumer he may buy processed foods containing eggs with complete confidence that the eggs used in them are of good quality.___ The Egg Products Inspection Act requires all plants that process liquid, dried or frozen egg products to be inspected by the U.S.D.A. Products must meet the highest standards of wholesomeness. This inspection law will apply whether the product is marketed within the state where it is processed, shipped across state lines or sent into foreign countries. The new law also requires that imported egg products must be produced in plants that meet these factors. They are his means of U. After July 1, the program will be operated under federal-state cooperation and inspections will be conducted by licensed federal or state inspectors. Most of our processed foods are added to, fortified, modified or otherwise treated in many ways. Scientists in the U. S. Department of Agriculture have estimated that the agricultural output in this country would be reduced by about 30 percent and the prices of farm products would likely climb 50 to 75 percent if farmers could not use pesticides. Quality would also drop. Our newest aspect of "chemical agriculture" is the use of materials to reduce or eliminate the need for cultivation. Herbicides, by cutting down on the amount of hand and machine work required to produce crops, make it possible for farmers to pass on savings to the American consumer. Chemicals are tools for a productive agriculture. They make possible the efficient production of abundant quantities of wholesome food. Association. The High Yield Award is based on the number of bushels per acre produced on five acres of soybeans. Adcock, also a leading cotton farmer, had a yield of 53.56 bushels per acre. Fowl Cholera Fatal Fowl Cholera is a bacterial infection that can affect all species of domestic poultry. The disease may occur as a mild chronic infection that is difficult to diagnose, but frequently it occurs as an acute infection, causing disastrous losses due to high mortality and production lags. The disease is most common in replacement pullets and turkeys over 12 weeks of age, say University of Georgia poultry specialists. A positive diagnosis cannot be made except by laboratory isolation of the causative organism. If started promptly, treatment is usually satisfactory. Vaccination is reasonably effective as a preventive and is routinely practiced by many pouitrymen. The Director of our Poultry division answered this one. The Georgia Egg Marketing Law requires all eggs to have the date packed printed on top and side of the carton. This means that the packer or producer is required by law to put the date on the carton at the time the eggs are put in the cartons. Eggs will hold up under proper refrigeration for at least 30 days and still be labeled as fresh eggs as long as the interior quality meets the grading standards. *** We have recently leased some property to pasture our horses on. There are quite a few sticks like the enclosed one growing on the property. We are afraid to cut them down because the horses might hurt their feet on the stubble. Could you identify and give method of eradication? Mrs. G.R., Jonesboro First we asked the plant people to identify the stick - turned out to be dog fennel. Spray with 2-4.D or 2,4,5-T for control. Then we asked the horse man if the stubble would harm the horses' feet -- will not. (Continued on page 8) Decorating Easter eggs is an old custom which goes as far back as 5,000 B.C. to the writings of the ancient Parasees. The egg was regarded as a symbol of the world and colored red to represent the force of life. As civilization progressed and the custom became popular, other colors for the eggs were introduced. The Dutch settlers in Pennsylvania and New York were responsible for introducing eggs at Easter. They colored large quantities of Easter eggs as tokens of better times to come. PORK RANCID The last frozen pork you had taste rancid? Next time you freeze pork, trim away excessive fat. This will eliminate rancidity, says Miss Nelle Thrash of the Georgia Extension Service. She also advises using moisture-vapor proof freezing paper. Straight Line (Continued from page 1) I like pickled hard boiled eggs. However, I have a serious problem. The shells stick to the eggs when cooketi. It is frustrating. The "guest eaters" won't help peel the eggs, they just eat them. Do you have a "cackleberry scientist" who has the secret formula for preventing the shell from sticking to a hard boiled egg? I am beginning to suffer from "shell shock". What is the address of the Poultry & Egg National Board? E.J.C., Brunswick Just so happens we have a "cackle-berry scientist" here. "Cackles" advises that eggs should be at room temperature before cooking to prevent the shells from cracking. Eggs that are at least two to three days old are much easier to peel. They are also easier to peel if dipped in cold water for several minutes before peeling. The address , is 18 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, 60603. * * * I have the most beautiful crop of toadstools in my lawn. However, as I am not particularly fond of toadstools, I would like very much to get rid of them. How? S.M.C., Marietta Treat your lawn with Fermate spray.
