Sets Standards Swarm In Springtime All the lovely things we associate with spring are in the air -- sunshine, Due To Blight Have you heard a farmer say or said yourself that it is difficult to get a flowers, birds, and spring fever. However, there are two things that swarm that can mar this wonderful time of year - the termite and the fraudulent pest control operator. large animal veterinarian? That they are all going to the city and engage in small animal medicine and no one cares to practice in the rural areas any more? This is one of the problems that the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association (GVMA) deals with. Founded in 1908 to promote the interests and well-being of the Farmers in Georgia who are unable to obtain a sufficient supply of blight resistant corn seed to plant their acreage may receive acreage credit, according to Alpha A. Fowler, Chairman, State ASC Committee. This decision was made because of the shortage of blight resistant corn seed in the areas in the nation significantly affected by corn blight in Homeowners should beware, particularly at this time of year, of any unknown person claiming to be a pest control operator who wants to treat for termites or other insects. The Georgia Structural Pest Control Act, which is enforced by the Entomology Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, requires all pest control companies and veterinarians in the state of Georgia, 1970. The prospective veterinarians must pass an examination given by the State Examining Board of the GVMA, the licensing arm of the association. Another way of serving the public is through organized short courses, seminars, workshops, etc. for the continued education of the practicing (Our guest columnist this week is A. L. The producer must note all seed (Continued on page 16) Advertisements and promotions have recently appeared in Georgia indicating that certain fertilization programs would bring about resistance to the Southern Corn Blight. Southern Corn Blight is a fungus and no research or documented evidence exists that fertilization has any effect on the resistance of corn to the blight. Corn farmers are urged to follow only Extension Service recommended planting and fertilization practices. Termites are very slow workers, therefore if not satisfied with a proposal from any one operator, home owners have time to get other bids from two or three different ones. There are almost 200 legitimate pest control companies in Georgia that are doing a fine job of protecting homes and businesses from pest damage. However, a few unscrupulous, unlicensed operators can swindle homeowners of thousands of dollars in a short time and damage the reputation of the legitimate business as well. The motto of the GVMA is, "Protector of animal and public health." Evidence of the truth of this statement is seen in the varying capacities veterinarians serve, such as public health, state and federal regulatory agencies, diagnostic laboratories, teaching, research, the armed forces, as well as the practicing large and small animal veterinarian that the public comes in contact with each day. As you see, the career opportunities are many and varied for the licensed graduate veterinarian, and the GVMA is an integral part of all of them and they are part of the GVMA. A new public service, "Dial-thenews", which provides instant market livestock news, was initiated recently by the Federal-State Market News Service in Thomasville. The automatic answering device is available to provide buyers and sellers with up-to-the-minute market information on livestock prices. Information is up-dated three times daily: 11:00 a.m., 12:15 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. The 11:00 a.m. update deals primarily with hog markets, the 12:15 p.m. with cattle prices and carlot meat prices, and the 4:00 p.m. with the day's market information along with late afternoon auction hog prices. Market information is available 24 hours a day by calling 912-226-9511. Horse Edition Coming April 7 The quarterly Horse Show and Sale Edition of the BULLETIN will be published April 7. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, March 17, 1971 We Get Letters Dear Editor: I had an ad published in the BULLETIN in January offering free flower seeds. I received 123 different requests, and sent out 398 packets. A few failed to send selfaddressed stamped envelopes, some asked for some of all the seeds, others asked me to send seeds to a relative and friend. They sent one small envelope with a 6C stamp for three orders of allseeds! This I just couldn't do. Please ask people to follow the directions in an ad and send a large enough envelope with adequate postage. Most all the people that wrote were really nice and I've enjoyed sending out the flower seeds. I have been unable to find anything as all the remedies for older goats seem to be dangerous for kids. J.H.M., Sparta Your veterinarian can help. There is a powder that can be applied to the kids and will rid them of lice. The kids may be clipped in the spring and scrubbed with a liquid detergent. ** What fertilizer should I use on my fig trees? When should I apply it? Mrs. R.H., Atlanta If the trees are young, use one pound of 6-12-12 in the early spring and follow with one-fourth pound of nitrate soda in June. Mrs. S.J., Decatur We contacted Dr. James Byford, Wildlife Specialist with the Cooperative Extension Service in Athens. May we suggest that you contact the Louisiana Department of Agriculture, Box 44345, Capitol Station, Baton Rouge, 70804, and the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission, 400 Royal Street, New Orleans, 70130, for information on attracting bullfrogs. *** We have found several holly trees which probably came from seed scattered by the birds. Page 16 THE MARKET BULLETIN Horses Of Georgia The common horehound is one of 30 species belonging to the genus Marrubium vulgare and is usually cultivated for its aromatic oil. Horehound is not a very decorative herb. It is perennial, hairy and aromatic with square stems and opposite, white wooly, ovalish leaves 1/2-3/4 inch long. The whole plant has a downy, whitish appearance. The flowers appear small, mintlike and white and are borne in whorls above each pair of upper leafstalks. The taste is the most recognizable characteristic. Horehound was introduced to North America by the European herbalists. It easily escaped from the herb garden and seems to maintain itself in the wild, preferring poor, dry soil. The plant can be used fresh or dried as the flavor and medicinal properties are not volatile. It can be dried by gathering and spreading on papers in a warm room until it will crumble easily. Crumble the leaves removing stems and store in closed jars. Horehound heals in gentle and harmless ways and is often used in home remedies. The dosage is not critical, and can be freely given to children or weakened patients. Horehound preparations are easily made and pleasant to the taste. To make strong horehound infusion, boil 1 cup of fresh leaves or I/ 4 cup of the dried herb with 2 cups water for 10 minutes, letting sit for 5 minutes more before straining. Cough syrup is made by mixing one part of this infusion with 2 parts honey and stirring until it is smooth. For tea, mix 1 part infusion and 2 parts boiling water. Horehound tea given very hot to a patient who is in bed and warmly covered, will induce sweating, which seems beneficial during a cold. It also seems to allay colds and ease any tickling of the throat enabling the patient to rest easier. In addition to its uses as a medicine, horehound is also used in cooking. The juice from the boiled plants is made into horehound candy. In England, beer is made from this plant. Cooking Meats You should always cook meat and poultry at low to moderate temperatures. This provides maximum tenderness and juiciness and yields more meat to serve because of less shrinkage. It also helps make sure the center is fully cooked without the outside being overdone. Thoroughbred With less than two percent of the total horses and ponies or twenty-six hundred head, the Thoroughbred is one of the minor recognized breeds in Georgia. These "aristocrats of the horse world" are currently enjoying considerably more expansion in the state than for many recent years, according to some knowledgeable horse fanciers. Some of this increased popularity may be due to recent campaigns to legalize pari-mutual betting in the state since this breed is the indisputable king of saddle racing. The Thoroughbred was developed in England and owes much of its foundation as a running horse to the interest that English royalty held for horse racing. Both the Romans and Normans brought horses to England during these early conflicts. However, these horses were mostly of the heavy type that were (One in a series on Georgia horses. Information was compiled by Pat Parks of the Crop Reporting Service for use in the Georgia Horse and Pony Survey.)___________ suitable for carrying the extra weight of the armor common to warfare of that period. Beginning with King Edward III in the fourteenth century, horses of the lighter breed were imported to England and crossed with native stock. Three stallions that arrived in England during the twenty-year period around the start of the eighteenth century are credited with the largest contributions toward the establishment of the breed. They are Godophin Barb, Byerly Turk and Barley Arabian and practically all present day Thoroughbreds trace back to these three fountainheads. After 1750, Thoroughbreds in England could hold their own against horses from other countries and interest in imported horses dropped rapidly. The first Thoroughbred to reach American shores was brought to Virginia in 1730. He was a stallion named Bulle Rock. Over the next seventy years, many others arrived, mostly through Virginia and the Carolinas. Breeders in Kentucky and Tennessee soon adopted the breed and became famous for the development of the Thoroughbred. The Blue Grass region of Kentucky is considered the cradle of Thoroughbred breeding in the United States. Performance was the hallmark of the breed rather than beauty. The stop watch became a very exacting measuring stick for breeding selections. Despite the emphasis on speed; certain characteristics became common for the breed. Thoroughbreds average about fifteen and one-half hands in height and usually weigh about one thousand pounds in racing form. The head is refined, the neck long and slender, and there is usually considerable slope at the shoulder. Probably the most distinguishing feature is the extra length of the legs as compared with other breeds. There are many points of confirmation that are similar to race dogs and actually, there are many who refer to the Thoroughbred as the "greyhound" of the horse world. ASC Allows (Continued from page 1) dealers from which he tried to obtain seed. 2. The producer must certify that he was unable to obtain sufficient N-Cytoplasm or acceptable blend corn seed to plant at least 45 percent of the feed grain base. Prevented planting credit will be limited to 50 percent of the feed grain base less any 1971 corn and grain sorghum acreage on the farm. 3. At the end of the request period the county committee will determine, after checking with local seed dealers, that N-Cytoplasm and acceptable blend corn seed was not available. When a producer is approved for prevented planting credit by the county committee, he can plant any other crop on the acreage for which acreage credit is approved. Here are some tips on the selection and care of frozen orange juice concentrate, an item growing in popularity. Select frozen orange juice that's stored at zero degrees F. or below, and that's stored below the "safe fill" line of the freezer case. When you get the orange juice home, place it in cold storage immediately and keep it frozen until you're ready to use it. You can keep it in the ice cube compartment for one week, in the refrigerator-freezer compartment for three months, or in the freezer for one year. If the freezing unit fails, and the juice thaws, use it as soon as possible. STAFF OF LIFE They say bread is the staff of life. We Americans must believe it, for we eat a lot of bread. In fact, the average U. S. consumer eats three and onehalf slices every day. FRUIT TREES So you didn't fertilize the soil around your fruit trees in the fall? Don't worry about it. C. D. Spivey, Extension horticulturist, says there's not much reasoning behind fall fertilization. He explains that trees only utilize fertilizer when they are in an active state of growth, and this is in the spring and summer months.
