The influence of its programs has been felt from Toccoa to Cairo and from Chickamauga Creek to Tybee Light. ABAC had an early beginning in 1908 as the Second District A&M School. In 1924 it became the Second District A&M College, and then in 1929 became the I S o u t h Georgia } College for Men. (When the Univer| sity System Board j of Regents was 1 established, the ISGCM was aboli ished, and in 1933 Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College emerged. The main purpose at that time was to provide technical and technological training in agriculture and home economics so the boys keys shows promise for the control of Marek's disease, which costs the poultry industry about $200 million annually. Discovered in research led by ARS veterinarian R. L. Witter, East Lan- sing, Mich., the turkey virus causes > the chicken's body to produce antibodies similar to those formed in chickens infected with the herpes virus that causes Marek's disease. So far, the turkey virus has not caused disease in chickens or tur- keys. Tests have shown that chickens inoculated with the non-pathogenic virus were protected against attacks by the Marek's disease virus. The causative herpes virus was only recently discovered (AGR. RES., Oct. 1967, p. 6). Formerly, Marek's disease had been grouped with avian lymphoid leukosis, a dis- ease it closely resembles. These two diseases are still easily confused since the clinical signs are very similar. Marek's disease, however, strikes swiftly and takes a high toll, while Agronomy Awards Programs were announced at Rock Eagle last week. Special tribute was paid to district and state producers of corn, peanuts, soybeans and cotton. State honors and recognition plaques went to the following pro- - ducers: Cotton Robert Jones, Dick Jones and James Forehand, Bleckley County. They produced 1,407 pounds lint per acre on 6.4 acres. Corn George Hair, Whitfield County. He produced 188 bushels to the acre on 36 acres. Soybeans--T. Hoyt Adcock, Walton County. On 14 acres he produced 65.9 bushels per acre. Peanuts Andrew Avery, Decatur County. He produced 4,588 pounds James E. Jackson, agronomist with per acre on 8.8 acres. As a matter of fact, the motto was "A Wholesome and Satisfying Life on the Soil." More recently, the motto has been broadened to "A Full and Abundant Life in a Contemporary Society." The four primary functions of ABAC are (1) college parallel programs, (2) technical-technological programs, (3) continuing education including short courses, and (4) community and civic service. College Parallel Programs Students who graduate from ABAC are eligible to transfer to other institutions within the University System. Since approximately half of our students are in Agriculture, Forestry and Home Economics, most transfer to The University of Georgia for their baccalaureate and graduate degrees. scientists to better understand the interrelationship of tumors and viruses in other animals and man. The state winners in each of the crops were also district winners. "The Money Maker Agronomy Pro- grams were initiated by the Exten- sion Service to recognize farmers who have done an outstanding job in production of Georgia's principal crops," Ralph Johnson, Extension Agronomy Dept., said. The producers honored were cred- ited with helping provide the leader- ship to make Georgia's 1968 state farm income reach $1,038,731,000. Johnson pointed out that in 1958 the state's farm income was $663,600,000. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, March 4, 1970 We Get Letters Dear Editor: I need information on sources of organic fertilizers, potash, etc. by the ton and the price of same. I would also like to cor respond with other organic gardeners. Mr. and Mrs. W. Bruce Oak Knoll Farm Route #2 Athens, Georgia 30601 Dear Editor: This here paper yore puttin' out is shore a delight to these ole peepers o' mine, especially in the vittle department. I'm sendin' along my favorite recipe: RECIPE FOR GOOD LIVING Take one whole year, divide into 12 full grown months, thoroughly free from old memories of bitterness, rancor, hate and jealousy. Pick off all specks of littleness and pettiness. See that these months are freed from all the past. Let each one be fresh and clean as the first breath of spring. Cut these months into 30 or 31 full days. This batch will keep for one whole year. Prepare one day at a time as follows: 12 parts faith 11 parts patience 10 parts courage 9 parts work (some people omit this ingredient and spoil the flavor) 8 parts hope 7 parts fidelity 6 parts liberality 5 parts kindness 4 parts of rest (leaving this part out is also likely to spoil the flavor) 3 parts prayer 2 parts meditation 1 well-selected resolution Put in a dash of good spirits, a spoonful of fun, a pinch of folly and a cupful of play. Sprinkle generously with good humor. Pour into the whole, love and kindness and mix with vim. Cook thoroughly 24 hours at medium temperature, garnish with a few smiles and a sprig of joy. Serve with quietness, unselfishness, and cheerfulness. Granny T. Mrs. Dorothy Brown, Box 323, Rt. 1, Calhoun, 30701. PageS Pipsissewa is the common name for Chimaphila umbellata. These deliciously fragrant and pretty flowers bloom profusly in the woods during the summer. A little plant, four to ten inches high, has a shinning evergreen foliage and flourishes abundantly among decaying leaves in sandy soil. Also known as Prince's Pine, the Pipsissewa is a member of the Heath Family. The translation of the Greek word chimpahila means winter loving, in reference to the evergreen leaves, but the lovely fragrant flowers do not blossom until June. They have nodding umbels of white or pink flowers. The leathery, toothed, shining dark green leaves grow in irregular whorls on the stem and produce white or rose pink flowers, four to seven to a cluster. They do not transplant well and should be left in their natural wooded habitat. Pipsissewa is evidently a name of Indian origin and perhaps refers to the strengthening properties which the red men ascribed to it. March, will you come roaring In like a lion this year, Or slip in on winds soft as A lamb's woolly ear? Will you send the elm's bronze Garlands soaring high, Or will you gently push the Lazy clouds across the sky? Will the willow stand still And weep, Or dance a wild dance With daffodils at her feet? Roaring in or soft and low, Only God can know how The winds of March will blow. F. J.
