Most trouble with farm sprayers can be traced to foreign matter that clogs nozzles or strainers or even wears out pumps. One of the best ways to prevent this from happening is the correct off-season storage of sprayers.

Our investigations of Georgia's drug problem shows it is serious but 
not hopeless. Youthful drug abuse has greatly 
increased since 1965. Adult abuse has slightly decreased. Adults con-

cine, fuss with pharmacists refusing t o refill 
prescriptions and are not satisfied if the doctor 
doesn't prescribe 
 
passed the House and Senate. The bill would provide for indem- 
nity payments for hives of bees destroyed due to American or European foul brood disease. 
Georgia is one of the major honeyproducing states in the nation. The sale of honey, beeswax and package bees brings more than $2,000,000 annually to the state's beekeepers. 
The Dixon Bee Bill would help curb the spread of the primary diseases affecting bee and honey production in Georgia by paying 50% of the value (up to $6) for each hive destroyed due to foul brood. An appropriation of $8,000 has also been requested to cover the possible cost of indemnity payments. 
 
Spraying equipment should be prop- 
 
When a sprayer finishes its work, it should be thoroughly cleaned to prevent the accumulation of corrosion or dirt particles. Screens and nozzles should be removed and stored in light motor oil. 
The sprayer booms and hoses should be stored in a dry place. If this has not been done, then there are certain rules in starting a sprayer off right that might help in preventing untimely breakdowns.

pep pills), peyote, LSD, heroin, etc. For a price, all these drugs are 
available in Georgia. No community or family is immune, but close family relations usually curb youthful drug abuse. 
We cannot eliminate the thousands of useful substances which could be abused, but abuse is decreased by the public's paying more attention to their children and cooperating with officials. 
Youthful ignorance, curiosity, rebellion and thrill seeking often leads to drug use. They begin with patent medicine, alcohol, drugs from home, glue sniffing, etc., then weak marijuana and on to stronger marijuana, hashish (resin from marijuana tops), amphetamine injections, LSD, etc. (most youths fear heroin and other opium drugs.) 
The first marijuana cigarette is like stealing that first dollar, the next is easier. Marijuana, a hearty, large weed, grows easily in Georgia. It acts on the brain to cause intoxication, mental confusion and eventually mind damage. 
The user may not realize his mind is affected or that he is mentally dependent upon the drug. It has a peculiar odor when smoked, and may be eaten. 
Marijuana is as dangerous as LSD, it just takes longer and more of it usually. 
LSD is a clear, odorless liquid and is put in various tablets, capsules, sugar cubes or even on paper to be 
 
loan levels for soybeans and cottonseed, a reseal loan program for soybeans, and sales policies for CCCowned stocks of soybeans. 
Soybeans from the 1970 crop will receive price support at a national average of $2.25 per bushel, No. 1 grade, 12.8-13.0 percent moisture, and cottonseed at $37 per ton, bases (100) grade, both levels being unchanged from those in effect for the 1969 crops. 
By law, soybeans and cotton seed must be supported at levels that will enable them to compete on equal terms in the market. 
In some areas of Georgia certain types of azaleas have experienced varying degrees of cold injury. These stems show typical bark splitting as a result of cold injury. The browned foliage is a result of lack of moisture during the several days of below freezing temperature and the destruction of water-conducting tissues. This same injury can occur by a sudden drop in temperature particularly if it was preceded by a period

Grade A Rate 
Dairy farmers were today reminded that Grade "A" milk ratings must be maintained in order to be recognized as a producer under the Georgia Federal milk marketing order number seven. 
Only those farmers who meet the inspection requirements of Grade "A", established by law, are entitled to share in the dollar proceeds of the marketwide pooling of all Class I and Class II sales, according to Hickman Greene, Market Administrator of the Georgia Federal Order. 
In addition, this assures the milk dealer and the consuming public that only pure and wholesome milk will be sanctioned for the benefits of the order. 
The Georgia Department of Agriculture is charged with the responsibility of enforcing the health regulations under which milk is produced. However, this responsibility is often delegated to the local or state health officials in order to prevent duplication of government services. 
When a dairy farmer does not meet the inspection requirements and is degraded by the regulating agency, he not only loses his share iri the dollar proceeds from the marketwide pooling of all Class I and Class II sales, but he also loses the pounds of production of the degraded milk in the computation of his daily base. 
"Therefore," Greene said, "it is wise for the dairyman to try to cor- . rect situations as he sees the need rather than risk degrading by the 
 
cles such as those found in water from ponds and creeks can easily clog a nozzle screen. If in doubt, filter the water as you fill the sprayer tank. Screens should not be permanently removed from the sprayer other than nozzle screens that are put into storage during the off season. 
3. Never use a metal object for cleaning nozzles. 
Always remove the nozzle and clean out the dirt. Never try to pick the dirt out with a pin or knife. Generally, soft wood or a tooth pick is the best to use. 
4. Clean the sprayer thoroughly after each period of use. 
Some chemicals are harmful in different degrees to certain plants. It is often necessary to remove all residue completely from the sprayer when different jobs are done. The rules of thumb for removing this residue are: (a) Remove and clean all screens 
and boom extension with kerosene and a small brush. (b) Mix one box of detergent with 30 gallons of water in the tank. Circulate through the by-pass for 30 minutes, then drain. (c) Replace the screens and boom extension. (d) Fill the tank 1/3 to 1/2 full with one part household ammonia to 49 parts of water. Circulate this mixture through the pump and by-pass, allowing a small amount to go out the nozzles. Let the remainder of the solution stand overnight and then run it out through the nozzles.

Recipes of the Week 
 
BUTTERMILK FUDGE CAKE 
 
3 cups sugar 4 eggs 1 cup boiling water 2 teaspoons soda 2 teaspoons vanilla 
 
1 cup margarine 4 squares chocolate 1A cups buttermilk 3 cups all-purpose flour 
 
Break chocolate squares into boiling water and set aside to dissolve. Cream sugar and shortening and add eggs, one at a time, stirring well after each. Stir the chocolate until thoroughly dissolved and smooth. Add to creamed mixture. Sift soda, with flour and add the dry ingredients alternately with the milk to the creamed mixture. Add vanilla and bake in four 8-inch, wellgreased cake pans or 1 large, oblong baking pan at 350 degrees for about 35 minutes, or until done. Cool slightly before removing from pans. Frost with chocolate icing, or serve with whipped cream.

Rub well on skin and all parts of meat all you can get rubbed in. Sprinkle rest on meat. Sew in clean white sack. Wrap in brown paper. Hang by big part of ham or shoulder and on corner of middling meat. Let hang up for a month. When it starts to drip, pinch a little hole in the corner of paper, where it can drip well.

Mountain Iaurel--Kalmia latifolia is an exceptionally handsome plant when in bloom and splendid for massing or as a single specimen. Also called spoonwood and calico-bush, it is familiar to everyone from Canada to Florida and far inland-expecially along the mountains, whose sides look like they are covered with pink snow during June, and even in waste places where, in truth, they blossom like a rose at this season. 
It is highly prized and carefully cultivated in England. Barewood Gardens, the beautiful home of the editor of the London Times, is celebrated for its fine specimens of mountain laurel and American rhododendron. 
The English papers advertise the approach of the flowering season, the estate is thrown open to the public and the people for miles flock to see the radiant strangers from across the water. 
It is not known there as laurel but by its generic name, Kalmia. Since it is so carefully cultivated there the head gardener could hardly believe that in parts of America the waste hill-sides are brilliant with its beauty every June. 
The leaves of our species are supposed to possess poisonous qualities and are said to have been used by the Indians for suicidal purposes. There is also a popular belief that the flesh ot a partridge which has eaten its fruit becomes poisonous. 
The popular name spoonwood grew from its use by the Indians for making eating utensils. The wood is ot tine grain and takes a good polish. The title calico-bush probably arose from the markings of the corolla, which to one with a vivid imagination could look like the cheap cotton prints sold in shops.

Drug users are usually moody, irritable, less alert and lose interest in themselves, their family and surroundings. They have serious problems and need close friends and family help, not scolding and rejection. 
If notified, the authorities can help with the problem. They are primarily interested in helping, not prosecuting the youth. 
Georgia Law provides stiff penalties for adults who sell drugs to minors, but allows minor punishment or probation for foolish youths who violate a drug or narcotic law the first time. 
Close, honest family relations (with responsibilities on child and parent), character building and education are the best defenses against drug abuse.

5. Do not lock pump solid to the 
tractor. 
Most power take-off pumps should be held with a chain to prevent rotation. Locking the pump solid with a metal bar usually results in misalignment of the bearing and consequently a short life for the pump. 
6. Do not use corrosive fertilizer 
solutions in ordinary sprayers. 
Liquid fertilizers are very corrosive to copper, galvanized surfaces, brass, bronze, and steel. 
7. Calibrate your sprayer often. 
Rapid nozzle wear is a definite hazard in spraying pesticides because of its added expense and also danger of applying too much pesticide to the crop. Due to the fact that some nozzles wear more than others, it is necessary that farmers calibrate their sprayers more often. Row crop sprayers should be calibrated every 30-40 acres of operation. 
8. Safety. 
Extreme care should be used in handling sprayers and pesticides. Each farm sprayer should be equipped with a plastic jug of water so that the operator may wash off any of the pesticide that contacts him in the course of operating the sprayer. The labels on the pesticide should be followed for safety's sake.
