FARMERS & CONSUMERS Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy lrvinf Commissioner IVI911x61 DUIIwUM VOLUME 56 Troy Keeble Gardening No. 1 Hobby Boating enthusiasts, skiers, campers, hunters, etc. will certainly challenge the fact that gardening is America's No. 1 hobby. We who are engaged in educational programs in gardening certainly attest that gardening has wider appeal, is more convenient, and the rewards are longer lasting. Just think, there's no license, registration, parking fees, etc. involved in gardening. A few packets of seed, a spade, a strong back and a willingness to search out the best practices and you are a gardener. That may be a bit of oversimplitfication no more ; so than that fishlerman who caught the record catch because he doesn't tell you how far he had to travel nor how many times he had been before. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy fishing but I also know there are many people who, due to age or physical condition, cannot fish. You might say if they are not able to fish they are not able to garden. It may come as a shock but there are gardening programs in our country today for the blind, the mentally (Our guest columnist this week Is Mr. Troy Keeble, Extension Horticulturist for the six-county metropolitan Atlanta area. Mr. Keeble''s offices are located In the No. 7 Hunter Street Building, Room 134, At- lanta, Ga. 30334.)________________ ill, the wheel-chair patients and residents of homes for the aged. Apartment dwellers in that 15th floor can garden it may be on the window sill but it is still gardening. Why is gardening so popular? Many reasons have been given but I have a few of my own that I would like to pass on to you. First, gardening can contribute to our health and to the appearance of our homes, communities, and our state. It can supply food for our table as well as nourishment for our soul. It can bring a bit of beauty and happiness to the very young and the very elderly. In these days of turmoil, polluted atmosphere and water, the generation gap and what-have-you, a little beauty can almost turn the tide of pessimism and defeatism that so often stays in the limelight. Gardening is not all hearts and "flowers." It takes time, it takes courage to keep failures from defeating you, and it takes regular attention to details such as watering, weeding1, fertilizing and controlling insects and diseases. If you haven't ever gardened, or have lost your interest, then give it another try with new determination. Consult or call your county agent or home economist for some of our extension service gardening publications. Your neighborhood nurseryman or garden center operator can also be a big help. In Warm Soil With warm weather and planting time just around the corner, a research tip on peanut planting could help with next year's crop. For good seedling emergence, soil temperature at peanut planting time should average 65 degrees F. or higher at 4-inch depth. Planting peanut seed in cool soil reduces stand. The date when the mean soil temperature (average of daily maximum and minimum) had averaged 65 degrees F. for 10 days ranged from March 8 to April 13 at three Alabama locations over a 5-year period. The study was conducted at Auburn, Ala., by agronomists A. C. Mixon of ARS and E. M. Evans of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station and meteorologist P. A. Mott of the U. S. Weather Bureau. If growers cannot obtain daily soil temperature readings from the local Weather Bureau office, they can insert a reliable thermometer 4 inches into the soil at several locations in the field and take readings about 10 a.m. on a clear day. The average of the readings should approximate the daily average soil temperature in the field. Spring Land Edition The 1970 annual Spring Farm Land edition of the Farmers' and Consumers Market Bulletin will be published Wednesday, March 18. The deadline for all notices arriving in the Bulletin office is March 4. Only farms and farm land in the following categories are eligible for publication: (1) For Sale, (2) Want to Buy or Exchange, (3) For Rent, and (4) Want to Rent. State Seed Analyst Elmo Winstead checks in one of the department germinators to see the progress of a farmer's seed sample being tested for germination. Kathy Hatfield, seed analyst, counts out a corn sample to determine the percentage of germination. Georgia is fortunate to have one of the most modern and extensive seed testing laboratories in the nation. Testing seed before planting is a great money saver for farmers and homeowners. PURITY AND GERMINATION All seed must be tested for purity and germination before they can be sold or transported in Georgia. This assures the farmer that when he plants his corn, soybean, cotton or other crop this year that the seed have been tested and will germinate. The same is true for homeowners sowing a new lawn for the spring and summer months ahead. READ THE TAG The state seed law requires^-that all seed sold or transported in Georgia must be properly labeled. But, it is up to the purchaser to read the label to be sure of what he is buying. Most all varieties of seed sold in Georgia must germinate at least 70 percent (most germinate at 85 and above) and contain very few noxious or weed seed. However, this tolerance varies on different varieties of seed. That is one reason it is important to read your label before buying. What appears to be a "good" price may not be any better than a more expensive variety when you study the tag for germination results and for content. Any farme'r who wants his seed tested before planting should send a sample to the department as soon as possible. There is no charge to farmers for this service. How To Have Seed Tested In order for a farmer to have his seed tested he should: Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin discusses legislation of interest to the Department of Agriculture, farmers and consumers, with members of the House of Representatives: (seated) Don Knowles, Stockbridge; Bob Cooper, Gainesville; Irvin; Lucius Black, Preston. (Standing) Francis Joiner, Tennille; Bob Wheeler, Alma; Henry Reaves, Quitman; Sidney Lowrey, Rome; Dorsey Matthews, Moultrie; Ted Hudson, Fitzgerald; Paul Nessmith, Statesboro; Marcus Collins, Pelham. 1. Send about one and one-half to two pounds of any large seed such as soybeans, cotton or corn to the department labs. About a pound of smaller seeds is sufficient. 2. Mail seed samples in card board or similar container to protect them properly. 3. Allow two to four weeks for the testing to be completed, depending on the type of seed. 4. Include the kind and variety of seed and your full name and address. 5. Address to: STATE SEED LABORATORY, GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, CAPITOL SQUARE, ATLANTA, GEORGIA 30334. Page 2 We Get Letters Dear Editor: I enjoy the BULLETIN each week and look forward to trying the recipes. Will some of your readers please tell me how to culture my Christmas Cactus so it will bloom? Had a few buds last year but not a single one this year. Dear Editor: Mrs. Eva McGiboney Route 2, Spring Road Covington, Georgia 30209 1 would like to compliment you on the new lay-out of the BULLETIN. It's just great and I look forward to reading each new issue. I would like to get a recipe for old-fashioned lemon cheese cake. There are several versions of this recipe. One recipe uses the whites of eggs in the batter and the yolks for filling. Another recipe uses whole eggs in the filling. If possible, I would like to get both recipes. F. L.
