FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner VOLUME 56 Wednesday, December 16, 1970 NUMBER 51 Robert Paris Entomologists Serving Georgia The Georgia Entomological Society, Inc., is a corporation chartered under the laws of Georgia as an educational institution, not one for financial gain or profit. The object and purpose of the society are to foster entomological accomplishment among its members and to promote the welfare of the entire state of Georgia through couragement "of: ( 1 ) The association and free discussion among all entomologists; (2) the preparation, reading, and publication of papers; (3) the dissemination of entomological information to the general public; (4) the cooperative prosecution of a statewide insect survey; and (5) the publication of the Journal of the Georgia Entomological Society. The accomplishment of these objectives involves considerable (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Robert Davis, president of the Georgia Entomological Society for 1971. He is director and Research Entomologist, USDA, Stored-Product Insects Research and Development Laboratory, Savannah.)________ effort on the part of all the society's members. Each year the society holds an annual meeting which allows the members the opportunity to meet, to read and hear scientific papers, and to discuss their successes and problems. The 1970 annual meeting was held in Albany, Georgia. The next annual meeting will be held at the DeSotoHilton Hotel in Savannah, Georgia, on March 16-18, 1971. Jekyll Island will be the location for the 1972 meeting. The society's members, individually and collectively, throughout the year support, encourage, and promote the entomological endeavors of teaching, research, and extension. Georgia has more entomologists employed within its borders than most other states, with only California, New York, Texas, and Florida boasting more. Anyone desiring to consult an entomologist can do so with little difficulty. They are employed at many colleges and universities, at state experiment stations, in some county agent offices, at and for the office of the state entomologist, by. the Georgia Department of Health, by many pest control firms, by insecticide sales firms, on military reservations, and at many of the federal research laboratories throughout the state. Though the society is state oriented, it is not without national and international recognition. It is an affiliate of the Entomological Society of America. Over the years, the Georgia society's members have held many offices and committeeships in (Continued on page 8) Use Caution When Buying Choosing A Tree For Christmas Hybrid Corn Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin this week reminded Georgia farmers that second generation corn (F2) produced from a hybrid cannot be advertised or sold commercially in Georgia. A farmer who has produced this corn can sell it at his own farm but he may not advertise it or transport it in a public vehicle. Farmers are also cautioned that if they buy or plant this second generation corn they can expect a 20 to 50 percent reduction in yield - as compared to an adapted variety. The Georgia seed law prohibits the sale of any seed not labeled according to variety and kind. Second generation hybrid corn is not a variety and therefore cannot be labeled in accordance with the law. Farmers are encouraged to purchase their seed corn as soon as One of the major highlights of the Yuletide season is the exciting journey in search of a Christmas tree. Many trees are purchased from various stores or Christmas tree lots. WATCH IT! Before you cut that tree for Christmas make sure its on YOUR land or you have obtained permission from the However, a large number of people will seek the countryside and woodlands in want of a freshly cut tree. They will see the perfect tree standing along the side of the road and in the midst of excitement, they will jump out of the car and start chopping away. What these people forget is that the ground this tree is standing on is private property. The Georgia Forestry Commission recommends that before cutting down a desired tree, one should obtain permission from the landowner. If he sees his tree being cut without his permission, he has the right to sue the party involved. possible as a shortage is anticipated. If you decide to use some of the second generation hybrid seed to supplement your crop, remember you will probably get a yield reduction of 20 to 50 percent. land owner. Remember, that land and those trees belong to somebody. Each year landowners will complain about Christmas trees being taken from their property. So, to protect yourself and give consideration to the landowner, obtain permission before cutting down a tree. 71 Cotton Conference Once a person has a Christmas tree in his possession, the fun of A look at what was new in production practices 40 years ago will be among presentations at the first decorating and preserving it in the home can be marred unless some rules of safety are observed: Cotton Film Festival, an innovation for the Beltwide Cotton ProductionMechanization Conference to be held January 14 and 15. Growers, agribusiness representatives, university research and extension personnel and others associated with the cotton industry will attend the sessions at the Sheraton-Biltmore hotel in Atlanta. The purpose of the Conference, hosted by the Georgia Extension Service, is to speed up development and application of science and technology to reduce cotton production costs and improve and preserve quality. One of Georgia's finest Christmas tree farms is operated by the J. E. Hendricks of Hahira. Here, young Mr. Hendricks measures to see if this one is ready for market. 1) Keep the fresh tree outdoors in a cool place until ready to decorate. Make a diagonal cut at the end of the trunk, at least one inch above the original cut end. Stand the tree in a container of water. 2) Put your tree in the coolest room of the house away from radiators, fireplaces, television sets and curtains. Also, keep the tree away from entrances. 3) Place the tree in a stand that will hold water at the base. Check water level at least once a day. 4) Do not use decorations that might burn, such as cotton or paper. Be sure that the lights you use are approved by the Underwriter's Laboratories. (Straight Line 5) Check for any faulty wiring and never leave the lights burning when away from home or when asleep. 6) Once the tree becomes brittle and dry, take it down and discard it. What game laws or regulations protect purple martins? J. B. Augusta No special rules or regulations except illegal to kill one. They are song birds and, may only be killed if city off*ic*i*als grant permission. I have a large grape vine in my back yard. How do I go about moving it without killing it? E.S.W., Jesup We have mailed you two booklets on grape vines that will explain the correct process. *** Please tell me how to get a nice engagement ring. Mrs. J.C.W., Leesburg As you did not give us any details, we assume you mean a quality stone. We suggest that you contact local jewelers for explanations and see samples of different grades and cuts of diamonds. A jeweler will be able to explain what to look for in the better grades of stones. (C,,ontinued, on page 8)% Christmas tree fire accidents in the home can be prevented if safety rules'are followed. A dry tree, without any source of moisture can quickly become a fire hazard. According to the State Fire Marshall's Office, fire tests have found that a six to seven foot tree requires on the average only 36 seconds from the time of ignition to flame out and during this period of time flames up to 23 feet in height are generated. Materials in the same room are soon engulfed in flames and the homeowner has a dangerous situation on his hands. The above recommendations hopefully will make the Yuletide season a happy one. Best wishes for a joyous Christmas. Page 8 Jerusalem cherry -- Solarium Pseudo-capsicum, also called Christmas cherry, is a small shrubby relative of the egg-plant, potato and bittersweet. This huge genus of herbs, shrubs, vines and sometimes trees, grows nearly world-wide but most are of a tropical nature. The common name of the whole genus is Nightshade. Since the fruits of this species ripen among the shiny dark leaves in December, the name Christmas cherry was given and it became part of the Christmas scene. The berries of some species are thought to be deadly poisonous while in others they are edible. The name of the genus Solanum is from Latin -- meaning "quieting," perhaps because of the narcotic effect of some species. Although we usually grow or buy the dwarf form, plants will sometimes reach four feet. To produce well fruited plants, seed should be sown in February and the young seedlings potted up and later put outdoors (pots and all) after the danger of frost has passed. Occasional shifts into larger pots during the spring and summer bring flowering size plants into five or six inch pots by September when they are brought indoors. The above picture shows how one can be developed from one Christmas to another by proper culture, feeding, etc. They are highly susceptible to gas fumes and must be protected from drafts. After their winter fruiting season is over, the branches may be cut back to within two to three inches of the main stem. They are advertised regularly in our BULLETIN. Bobby Stewart of Keysville is getting in the goat business in a big way with the help of his pet goat Janie-Bell. Last February, Janie-Bell gave birth to four kids -- and in November to five more! Bobby, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Stewart, Jr., also raises pure-bred Hampshire hogs and has won several first place honors with h^s animals. THE MARKET BULLETIN Egg Carton Decorations ide end Do you need some beautiful, elegant, but inexpensive Christmas decorations? Why not make a wreath, candle holder or Christmas tree out of egg cartons. Both the molded type egg carton with the high cones in the center or the square molded type with the low bumps can be used. The star cut is used when making these decorations. Cut each egg carton apart as shown in the above sketch. Cut at the corner, cutting down at an angle as shown in figure B. Each egg carton yields twelve 4-pointed stars. To make the star tree, the following items are needed: 60 stars, round toothpicks, straight pins, 1 round styrofoam pedestal, white household glue, one 12 inch styrofoam cone, 1 can decorator's gold spray paint (check to be sure it is compatible with styrofoam), 1 can spray glue, glitter, pipe cleaners, small glass ornaments, ice pick, 1 tree top ornament, 1 single edge razor for cutting stars, and 11/2 yards velvet ribbon. DIRECTIONS Cut out the number of stars needed for your tree. Stick 4 toothpicks into top of pedestal and squirt glue on and around toothpicks. Shove cone down firmly on toothpicks. Starting at the bottom of cone, pin a row of stars around the bottom. Insert a straight pin on each side and push it in and down at an angle. Squeeze a drop of glue on top of each star and let it run down between star and styrofoam. Fill rest of cone with rows of stars placed as close together as possible, squeezing glue on each row. Let glue dry and spray with gold spray, pointing spray in every direction. Let dry. Spray tree with spray glue and sprinkle with glitter. While this is drying, glue pipe cleaners in glass ornaments. Take hangers out of each and fold end of pipe cleaner back on itself about 1 inch. Cover folded end with glue and insert glued end in hole in ormanent. When these are dry, make hole in center of each star with ice pick. Dip other end of pipe cleaner in glue and push gently but firmly into hole as far as you wish. Similarly secure the tree top ornament in place. Tie a velvet bow around the base of the pedestal as a final touch. To make a 9 inch star wreath, the following items are needed: 66 stars, one 9 inch styrofoam ring, straight pins, 1 can of decorator's spray paint, 1 can spray glue, glitter, pipe cleaners, small glass ornaments, ice pick, 21/2 yards velvet ribbon about 2 inches wide. DIRECTIONS Cut stars as illustrated above. Put 3 drops of white household glue on the back of each star and attach to ring with pins. After covering ring with stars, let dry. Spray wreath with favorite color and let dry. Spray with spray glue and sprinkle glitter on. While glitter is drying, insert pipe cleaners in ornaments and glue in place, adding to wreath following same directions as for tree. Make large bow of ribbon and tie on at the top of the wreath. To hang, make a pipe cleaner hook and insert through styrofoam ring on the back. A candle holder can also be made with egg cartons using the star cut. Cut a 4 inch styrofoam ball in half to use as the base. Attach stars and ornaments to the rounded side of the cut styrofoam ball in the same manner as for tree and wreath. Shave candle to a point and gently but firmly push into center of holder. Greenery or flowers may be added around the base of the candle for an extra touch Straight Linef (Continued from page l> ^^^ *& My chickens pull and peck feathers from other chickens in the pen. Are they sick and what can be done to stop this? J.J.B., Silver Springs, Fla. You won't believe this, but it is the cannibalism in 'em 'coming out. Poultry should be de-beaked when one day old or specks put on later. Specks are carried by poultry supply houses. * * * RESPONSE To get rid of rattle snakes, get a couple or so of guineas. They not only kill and eat snakes but furnish meat and eggs for the table as well. However, they are quite noisy with their pot-racking and squawking. We had them as a child and they would kill any snake they saw crawling. Mrs. E.C.B., Monticello Eradication of rattle snakes is simple. Get a pair of indigo snakes, good big ones about 5 feet long. Put them out in the spring and within two years - no more rattle snakes. Indigo snakes are so docile looking you wouldn't believe they could be so mean - but let one see a rattler and they are a greased streak of fuzzy. Sorry I can't tell you where to get indigo snakes. No one ever told me. H.E.A., Live Oak, Fla. To chase off rattle snakes, get a king snake. A king snake will get rid of any poisonous snake. I hope they bring a comfort Upon this Christmas night, To all who pass my cottage And see the twinkling light. The perfume-wafting candles Have brought my heart relief. I want to share the message, Let others find belief. f In Christ the great Redeemer, Who gave His life for men That souls once steeped in darkness Could hope and live again.
