Certified Seed 
The University of Georgia College of Agriculture has the responsibility for the seed certification program in Georgia. The College in turn has designated the Georgia Crop Improvement Association as its agent to carry out the program. 
The overall operation is under the supervision of the GCIA Board of Directors and the GCIA Advisory Committee. The day to day operation is under the direction of the Extension Agronomist - Seed Certification. 
The Association is an organization of seed growers and 
others who are interested in growing and making available to the public through certification high quality seed of superior varieties so grown and distributed as to insure genetic purity and identity. The association certifies both public and private varieties, but first the variety must have been tested a

minimum of three years by the Georgia Experiment Stations and then approved by the appropriate agronomy and GCIA Commodity Committees. GCIA now has twentyfive crops and one hundred thirty-six varieties on its list of crops eligible for certification. 
There are three classes of certified seed - (1) Foundation (white tag), (2) Registered (purple tag), and (3) Certified (blue tag). Generally, the foundation and registered seed is planted by seed growers for further increase with the certified blue tag class going to the regular commercial farmers. 
Georgia certified seed must not only meet the minimum requirements of the Georgia Seed Law, but also meet or exceed the minimum standards required by GCIA. These standards are considerably higher than those required by law for noncertified seed. 
GCIA has 478 active members and around 1500 contract growers. The association field inspected and approved for certification over 90,000 acres of seed crops in 1970 for these members. During the 1969-70 season, the association tagged 1,200,000 bags of certified seed with a retail value of approximately $17,000,000. GCIA certifies more seed than any other state in the Southeast and is one of the top twelve in the United States. 
The basic objective of the association in cooperation with the College of Agriculture, Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Foundation Seed program is to work with seed growers, seed processors and seedsmen in such a way as to make high quality seed of a recommended variety available to all the farmers in Georgia.

veterinarians must remain alert to prevent the re-introduction of serious hog cholera outbreaks in Georgia. All cases or suspicion of hog cholera should be reported immediately in order that proper prcautionary 
measures can be taken. Due to the success of Georgia's 
cholera eradication program, serum prophylaxis for feeder and breeder swine sold through special feeder and breeder sales will not be required, effective April 1, 1971. 
The goal is to continue until April 8, 1971, without an additional case of

ROASTED QUAIL WITH MUSHROOMS 4 quail 4 slices bacon 1 tablespoon butter or margarine 2 teaspoons lemon juice l/ 2 cup hot water l 3-Qi. can broiled mushroom pieces, drained 
Wipe quail inside and out. Wrap each bird with a slice ot bacon and roast in a buttered pan at 350 degrees until tender (about 30 minutes); baste occasionally. Remove birds and add butter or margarine, water and lemon juice to drippings in pan, stirring to make gravy. Add mushrooms. Serve the birds with gravy poured over the top.

PUMPKIN BREAD 1 l/ 2 cups sugar l/ 2 cup oil 2 eggs, beaten 1 cup pumpkin l/ 2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 2/ 3 cups flour 1 teaspoon soda l/ 2 teaspoon baking powder l/ 3 cup water 
Sift dry ingredients together. Add other ingredients and mix well. Bake in oiled bread pan at 350 degrees for one hour for small pans, 1 I/ 2 hour for large pans and lay foil on top for last I/ 2 hour of baking.

Horses Of Georgia 
 
Salvia officinalis - "common garden sage gone wild" -- is an 
evergreen member of the Mint Family. It is one of the most 
popular herbs of the holiday season - probably used in stuffing more birds than any other herb. If 
you cannot find it growing wild, a few packages of seed will soon grow in outdoor or indoor seed beds - transplanting them when large enough to move. If planted close enough it can be clipped to 
make a low hedge. It gets its genus name, Salvia, 
from the Latin word for "save." 
The ancient herbalists of the Middle Ages ascribe marvelous healing and preventive ppwers to sage -- curing so many ills that we can't begin to list them here -- and 
retained its reputation as a potent medicine until recent times. 
One woman writer says that if taken during the winter months a woman will never show her age and will have a youthful ap pearance all her days; also, that hair rinsed in sage tea will never turn gray or if gray when taken it will be restored to its natural color. If this is not enough to make you go out and buy some of the commercial types if you don't 
have it growing in your garden, another writer says, "Sage is singularly good for the head and brains, it quickeneth the senses 
and memory." Even its culinary use has a 
medical history. Originally sage 
was added to sausage, to stuffing for fowls, or to pork dressing to counteract the tendency of these rich foods to cause indigestion and fatness. Its protective healing advantages have been forgotten but meanwhile we have learned to like its flavor in rich meat dishes. This culinary seasoning is made by drying the sage leaves in a warm room and then crumbling them -- the home remedies are 
best made from the leaves (sage tea) which can be picked throughout the year. 
 
American Saddlebred 
 
Placing fifth in popularity among the established breeds with over seven thousand head, was the American Saddlebred. They accounted for just over five percent of the horses and ponies in the State. 
 
This breed was once known as the blending of several recognized

How can I get rid of kudzu? H.J.B., Douglasville 
2,4-D spray or a herd of cows or go*a*t*s. Most of our tomatoes this past summer had white spots under the skins. The spots did not affect the taste but I am wondering what caused them. I had the soil tested and it was in excellent condition.

Our tomato man advises that too much hot sun and not enough foliage causes white spots. Small stinging insects also cause white spots. He suggested using a tomato plant with more foliag*e*a*nd spraying for insects next summer.

Happier Chickens 
They came down from the rafters, stopped milling around and quit hiding in their nests. 
That's what a group of hens did after "happy chicken sounds" were broadcast throughout the henhouse for several weeks. 
Just as scientists learned to use light to extend the day and increase egg production, now they are using chicken language to calm poultry hysteria. 
Drs. Charles N. Dobbins Jr., Thomas W. Powell and Stanley A. Vezey of the Cooperative Extension Service veterinary department reported on the phenomenon in a recent newsletter to county agents. 
Chickens have four basic senses, they said. These are sight, smell, taste and sound. Laying hens see and hear well, but their ability to smell and taste is just so-so. 
And scientists are using this ability to hear in a system of "brain washing" to calm hysterical hens with happy talk.
