FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner VOLUME 56 J.G. Fatal Engineering In Agriculture The basic aim of Agricultural Engineering Department is to mechanize farming operations. New machines may be designed and built or existing machines may be modified. Methods of using equipment efficiently are also studied. For example, a machine has been built which will subsoil under the row, place fertilizer in a vertical band from surface to subsoil depth, and bed in a single operation. Preliminary results indicate that when used in the fall on the contour, erosion is less, and spring planting may be done under optimum conditions with no fertilizer needed at planting. This reduces planting time by 50 percent and produces good stands. Other fertilizers needed are applied by sidedressing. The department has developed a simple pea and lima bean harvester that is 96% efficient. Although not (Our guest columnist this week is J. G. Futral, head of the Agricultural Engineering Department of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture Experiment Stations, Georgia Station, Experiment, Georgia.)_________________ equipped with a cleaner, the mixture of peas and leaves may be transported economically and shelled by commercial shelters. A pimiento pepper harvester now under development has reached a field efficiency of 75% and improvements are planned for next year. New work involves the development of a peach harvest aid which will allow pickers to ride in comparative comfort. To complement this machine, special peach plantings have been made to produce a tree wall type of growth which will allow machine pruning and increase picker efficiency. A small tree cultivator has been developed for these closely spaced trees. Other new work planned is the mechanization of nurseries and the improvement of their overall operation through changes in materials handling and time and motion studies. In cooperation with the College Station at Athens, an oxidation ditch for the disposal of swine wastes has been constructed and operated for 18 months. Although some problems remain, in general the waste disposal has been odorless with good environmental effectiveness. Another important function of this department is to aid researchers in other fields by the design and construction of specialized equipment. Precision fertilizer and herbicide applicators, pilot plant peach peelers and improved instrumentation have been developed under this area of work. Wednesday, December 2, 1970 NUMBER 49 Tobacco Meetings Stress Danger Of Export Loss During the past two weeks the LEFT, A SHORT-CUT HAM, RIGHT, LONG CUT. RUBBING HAM WITH "CURE. Georgia Department of Agriculture has conducted several meetings It's Ham Curing Time concerning the danger of losing Georgia's tobacco export market. During the marketing season last As the cold weather approaches, many Georgians are busy preparing country cured hams for later enjoyment. Whether you buy your carcass or year, it became apparent that unless we reversed the trend of leaving the old line tobacco varieties for the more raise your own hogs, there is nothing quite like country cured ham for break- resistant and easier to handle ones, fast -- or anytime. Georgia tobacco growers would lose Curing a ham is a relatively simple process if a few guide lines are followed. Meat-type hogs, those within the weight limits of 180 to 240 pounds, produce the most desirable hams for curing. Hams from meattype hogs have the minimum of fat and maximum of lean desired by most. REFRIGERATION Refrigeration or chilling the hog carcass is a must to prevent spoilage during the curing process. Hams must be chilled to 40 degrees F. in- ternal temperature before the curing process can begin. Temperatures above 40 degrees F. encourage ham souring bacteria to multiply rapidly resulting in the loss of the entire ham. It takes 12 to 15 hours to chill a 150 pound hog carcass to the adequate temperature. 32 to 35 degrees F. is a good chilling temperature that will prevent souring bacteria from working. If slaughtering your own hog, wait until the weatherman predicts a heavy frost, keep the slaughtering process conditions sanitary, and take directly to a the tremendous export market in tobacco that they now enjoy. The old line Georgia-Florida flue cured varieties have always been preferred by the export buyers. At the request of the tobacco buying companies, these meetings, attended by several hundred Georgia growers, were held to explain the situation. Representatives of two tobacco buying companies spoke at the series of meetings: E. A. Dinnsen, Jr., Foreign Sales Manager of the K. R. All swine imported into Georgia after slaughter. Tail bones, Hank, and excess fat, especially over the cushion, should be removed. A good trimming will produce an attractive finished product. A ham that shows signs of being bruised should not be used as it will spoil during the curing process. Either the long cut or the (Continued on page 8) seventy percent, went to foreign markets. The Georgia markets that dealt heavily in the old line varieties brought an average of four cents a pound higher for tobacco than those markets that were heavy in the new resistant varieties of tobacco. The varieties recommended by (Continued on page 8^ will be required to have serum treatment according to the latest federal Animal Health Division [Straight Line) dosage schedule within five days prior to importation. Our goal is to continue until next April 8,1971, without additional cases of hog cholera so that Georgia may be recognized as a hog cholera free state. They advise storing in moisture proof containers in the refrigerator for protection against weevils. E.F.M., Savannah The Georgia Walking Horse Association is sponsoring a special Christmas Sale of registered Tennessee walking horses December 12 at 2 p.m. in the Agricultural Building of the Southeastern Fair Grounds in Atlanta. This is the first promotional sale of Tennessee Walking horses to be held in Georgia and the first sale of this kind to be held inside the Agricultural building. For additional information regarding the sale, contact Red Smith, Director, Equine Division, Georgia Department of Agriculture. Sorry, but our Poultry division tells us that the old-fashioned method is the best yet. The feathers may be plucked*o*n*e by one or by the handful. I recently read in the MARKET BULLETIN that lime or clorox could be used to kill moss on steps. I live in a densely shaded area and have moss growing on the roof of my house. I would like to know if I can broad cast lime on my roof to kill the moss or would it damage the asphalt roofing. The moss grows in the joints and when removed, leaves holes in the roof. The roof is old but before reroofing 1 would like to find out how to control this. J.J.M., Mableton Our moss man advises the use of copper sulfate, available at your local drugstore or garden shop. Use 50 percent copper sulfate powder at the rate of one ounce to one gallon of water or 90 percent copper sulfate crystals at the rate of one ounce to two gallons of water. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, December 2, 1970 We Get Letters Dear Editor: As a result of being mentioned earlier this year in the MARKET BULLETIN, I sold over 600 plastic gourds designed especially for Purple Martins. My hobby has turned into a full-scale business and I want to thank the MARKET BULLETIN for my success. Your readers may be interested to know that Purple Martins are the most natural insect control known to man; they eat 2000 mosquitos and 500 house flies every 24 hours. The Martins are now migrating so you should prepare your Martin homes if you want to attract these birds. Thank you again for the wonderful job you are doing. Mr. Jack Barber P. O. Box 3973 Hill Station Augusta, Ga. 30904 Dear Editor: I like flowers which bloom. In the spring of 1970, I planted one of my three vegetable gardens, then dug out two feet of bermuda grass the length of the garden, about 100 feet. I then planted tall marigolds as the first row, because of their beauty. After my vegetables and marigolds were planted and growing, I read an article somewhere which stated if you would plant a row of marigolds as the first row of your vegetable garden you would not have bugs on your plants. It worked; the marigolds and vegetables were beautiful and no bugs. Pearl Flanagin City Route 3 Canton, Ga. 30114 (Editor's Note: The "bugs" Ms. Flanagin refers to are probably nematodes.
