Livestock Market
Reports For You
How did you sell your last load of cattle or hogs? Did you sell them on the farm sell them at a local auction or sell them direct to a packing plant?
Did you make your decision on the basis of prices currently being paid
at these points? If you didn't, you most likely could have, because Federal - State Market News Service reports prices being paid for all species of livestock here in Georgia and at such outlets across the country. The Livestock Market News Service, administered by the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Consumer and Marketing Service in cooperation with the Georgia Department of
(Our guest columnist this week is Ernest W. Morgan, In Charge, Livestock Market News Branch (Georgia), ThomasvUle, Ga.

These reports, available through newspapers, radio, television, telephone and mailed reports, provide both sellers and buyers of livestock a solid basis on which to reach marketing decisions. It could be said that market news is a mirror reflecting consumer preferences back through marketing channels to producers.
Nationwide USDA and state livestock market reporters travel to auctions, feedlots, ranches and packing plants to get information once gathered only at terminal markets.
At present, USDA covers 22 direct marketing areas and 25 terminal markets. In cooperation with 21 states, USDA coordinates the collection and dissemination of market data on about 190 auction markets across the country.
In Georgia, our Federal-State Market News Service reports 24 auctions. Of these, 15 are the largest volume sales in the state, while the remaining 9 are strategically located for area price representation.
In addition to auction reporting we are reporting direct sales of slaughter cattle and have two direct hog

WATCH OUT Catfish Farming

FOR MIRACLES New Money Crop

IN FERTILIZERS

The lowly, big-mouthed, bewhiskered lunker known as the catfish is being discovered as a major food crop and money maker for Georgia farm-

Every year about this time new "miracle" fertilizers and the extravagant claims for them start making the farm scene.
So says P. J. Bergeaux, agronomist with the University of Georgia Extension Service.
Bergeaux said companies marketing these plant foods usually concentrate their promotion in only a few counties. "They select a prominent farmer, convince him of the merits of the particular fertilizer, and then sell him on acting as their representative."
Bergeaux offered four tips to farmers who are considering buying new or unusual fertilizer materials this
year: (1) Study the specific claims and
see if they jibe with University of Georgia Extension recommenda-
tions.

ers. And the new raised, fed and coddled cat is tasty and not so lowly as his

older brothers.

M,,any peopl.e, especi.ally i.n t,,he

South, have been enjoying catfish

and hushpuppy suppers for years,

but only recently have the possibili-

ties of mass producing and process-

ing the catfish been considered.

Economically Important

Channel catfish farming is becom-

ing an important element in the

economy of several southern and

midwestern states.

The state of Georgia is in a stra-

tegic location to take advantage of

the demand for catfish that now far

outstrips the supply.

Georgia Well Suited

The climate, topography and other

production factors are ideal in Geor-

gia for commercial catfish produc-

tion. At the present time, less than

300 acres are under production in

(2) Examine the guaranteed analysis tag for nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and determine whether the recommended amount will supply enough fertilizer elements to your crops for the full growing season.

Georgia's Top4-H

It was in the early 1900's that the culture of channel catfish began. But

today, in Georgia, there are still only

Georgia's top 4-H land judges were announced this week. They are Mark
Callaway, Catoosa County; Tommy Daughtrey, Cook; Roger Serritt,
Gordon, and Harmon Marchant, Tift. T. L. Walton, state 4-H leader with
the Cooperative Extension Service,
said the four young men earned this honor in competition with nearly 200 contestants in the state-wide
event.

catching on fast.
New Popularity
There are several reasons for the new popularity of catfish as a farm enterprise. One is the consumer demand. Companies have expressed interest in franchising catfish restau-
rants as well as making fresh fillet and frozen dinners available.
Another reason is often land unsuited for any other type of farming lends itself well to catfish.

We Get Letters

Dear Editor: Please thank the ladies for sending me their date nut loaf
recipes. Wish I could thank each one for sharing their recipe with me, but I can't. I received 18 recipes through the mail and two over the phone.
Thanks to everyone. Mrs. T. E. Thurmond 2238 Colonial Drive, N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30318
Dear Editor: The MARKET BULLETIN has now become the magazine
in our home. Really the print is so good, to say nothing of the unique manner each item is advertised.
This request is for a recipe or formula to sugar cure home cured hams and bacon. Many years ago our Mother used a method for hams, but never did any bacon. If you have or can obtain such information would be so happy to receive some.
The recipes for different foods are excellent. Mrs. Sterling Cox 863 Cherokee Road Social Circle, Georgia 30279

Dear Editor: It seems that there are a lot of people interested in Bug
Traps. The best one that I have ever had any experience with is a wash tub, large size. Fill it 2/3 full of water and then put enough kerosene oil (or coal oil) on top of the water to cover the water. Then get an extension cord, 30 feet or 50 feet, with a 100 or 150 watt bulb fastened above the tub about 1 1/i" above the water. When the weather gets warm, turn it on and let burn all night. This will catch more bugs than you ever dreamed of catching and there will be at least 25 different kinds.

Dear Editor: Please if possible publish the song (enclosed), Farmer's
Boy, in the BULLETIN. I met a lady from Georgia who wanted it and I lost her address.

Dandelion -- common name for Taraxacum officinale, is a stemless herb of the Composite Family. It came from the OldWorld but now is naturalized in almost every temperate climate and often an annoying weed -especially in lawns. It is difficult to eradicate because of its taproot, which is shown in the above illustration.
If Emerson's definition of a weed, as a plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered, be correct, we can hardly place the dandelion in that category. It is collected from the wild for "greens" and sometimes cultivated for that purpose -many European growers have developed special strains. Its young sprouts are valued as a potherb, its fresh leaves enjoyed as a salad, and its dried roots used as a substitute for coffee in various countries.
It is said that the Apache Indians so greatly relished it as food that they scoured the country for many days in order to get enough to appease their appetites - and that the quantity consumed by one individual exceeded belief.
The feathery-tufted seeds which form the downy balls beloved as "clocks" by country children, are easily disseminated by the wind, which accounts for the plant's wide range. The common name is a corruption of the French dent de lion (lion's tooth). There is a difference of opinion as to which part of the plant is supposed to resemble a lion's tooth. Some say the jagged leaves, others claim that it refers to the yellow flowers, which are likened to the golden teeth of the heraldic lion.
Catfish Farming
(Continued from page 1) in Georgia all minimize construction cost by utilizing the natural topography of their land. The biggest problem encountered by producers using older ponds was the lack of harvest basins.
Channel catfish feed on plants, animals and bottom mud, but they can and are being trained to accept pelleted feed.
RESEARCH
There is presently research being done in Georgia on catfish culture at Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, located on Skidaway Island, near Savannah.
The main goal of this research is to develop a system of rearing catfish in intensively stocked round tanks as opposed to the conventional pond culture method.
Further research in this area may help the catfish industry to develop as has the poultry industry by utilizing little land for big production.
Soutnerners have taught people from other parts of the country and world to enjoy many foods. Perhaps the catfish and hushpuppy supper will soon be as popular as southern fried chicken.

THE MARKET BULLETIN And his daughter for a bride.

The sun had sunk Behind the hills Across the dreary moor, When wet and cold There came a little boy Up to the Farmer's door.
Can you tell me says he If any there be Who would like to give employ. I can reap and sow, Plough or hoes. I am a farmer boy.
My father's dead, 'my' Mother's left with four Poor children small, And what is worse For my mother's sake, I am the oldest of them all.
And if no boy You chance to want, One favor I've to ask, To shelter me til the dawn Of day from the cold And winter blast.
At the break of day I will tredge away Elsewhere to sing employ, To plough or mow, Or reap or sow, To be a Farmer's boy.
The farmer's wife cries By the lad, let him No further seek. O, do papa, his day cried. While the tears ran Down her cheek.
The farmer boy grew To a man, and the Good old farmer died And to this lad Left the crop that he had

The farmer is now a man He thinks and smiles For joy, on the break Of day, when he passed That way, to be a farmer's boy.

To reap or to sow To plow or to mow To be a farmer's boy.

a USDA supervisory reporter. State reporters cover the auctions and market reports (including receipts, supply, demand conditions, price trends and quotations) are released in local auction areas and in addition are summarized and disseminated in a composite report through the Thomasville office by the USDA Market Reporter-in-Charge.
State reporters are trained in USDA livestock grades and reporting techniques. Also, he must know and be able to apply U. S. Standards for grades of livestock because all his reports are made on the basis of these grades.
In 1969 our staff of reporters in Georgia covered some 648,000 cattle and calves and 736,000 hogs at auctions. Direct marketings reported were: Georgia - Florida - Alabama Packer Hogs 945,000; North Georgia Hogs 114,800; and 56,500 slaughter cattle.
Our reporters are called upon to conduct grading demonstrations, live animal grading at shows and sales in the market area. These activities are scheduled so that they will not interfere with regular market reporting duties.
The USDA and Georgia Department of Agriculture work continuously to keep its market information and reports in tune with the changing nature of livestock marketing.
