FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner VOLUME 56 Wednesday, September 16, 1970 NUMBER 38 Tommy Irvin Loans for Water, Sound Reasoning Sewers Available In Chemical Use America is blessed with the ability and know how to produce enough food and fiber to feed and clothe her people in abundance. This blessing is due to two factors: one the rich land and natural resources that are ours and, secondly, the technical knowledge and ability of our farmers. Without one the other would be of little value. Recently, the people of this state and nation have become concerned over the use of pesticides and chemicals in the production of our foods and fibers. Extremists on the one side contend that these pesticides, herbicides, etc., are polluting our land and water and through consumption poisoning the people. On the other hand, some contend that the chemicals are harmless and necessary and no ill will come from their use. Both are right and both are wrong. Without the use of these chemicals, we could not produce enough food to keep our people from going hungry. There is now and will continue to be less and less land available for use in producing sustenance for an ever increasing population. If the use of pesticides and other chemicals was discontinued altogether, the people would go hungry. It simply would be impossible to produce enough food to take care of the demands of this country, much less for America to enjoy surpluses and exports to other countries. On the other hand, if these chemicals are not used with extreme caution and in proper proportions they are dangerous and even deadly. There is a need for more education, research and regulations as to the labeling, application and disposal of such chemicals. This is being done. I believe that within the framework of our existing laws governing the use of these chemicals additional regulations should be enforced as to the manufacturing, packaging, labeling and use. In particular I would like to see more stringent labeling requirements as to proper use, toxicity and disposal of all pesticides and herbicides. This, coupled with more education on the use of chemicals and continued checks on the residue and toxicity of these chemicals should insure the consumer a safe and quality product and at the same time allow the farmer to continue to feed and clothe this nation abundantly. I take neither of the extreme views of the use of pesticides and herbicides. To me these chemicals are like our drugs. Used properly and in moderation they can save lives, but when misused or used in excess, even the simple aspirin can and does kill thousands of people each year. From Local FHA The Farmers Home Administration provides loan and grant assistance for both water and waste disposal facilities to towns and private non-profit corporations serving residents of open country and rural towns of not over 5500 population. Loans may be scheduled for repayment over periods up to 40 years at 5 percent interest. Grants to help pay for water or waste disposal projects are made in amounts necessary to assure reasonable user costs but may not exceed 50 percent of the development cost. Funds may be used to install and improve (1) the development, treatment, purification and distribution of water including wells, pipelines, pumping plants, filtration and treatment equipment; (2) facilities for the collection, treatment 1st in a series of three articles by J. N. McDuffie, State Director of the Farmers Home Administration. Towns or families living in rural areas should contact the county FHA office if they are interested in ob- taining financial assistance.______ and disposal of waste including collection lines, treatment plants, outwall sewers, disposal fills, stabilization fills and storm sewers. Loans and grants have been made in Georgia to build or improve about 100 water systems and about 30 sewer systems. When all of these projects have been completed they will serve about 20,000 rural families with water and provide waste disposal facilities to about 6,500 families. These projects have ranged in size from a small group of people living in a rural area that have formed a non-profit corporation to a large county-wide water system that will serve over 2,600 families, churches, schools and business establishments. Ga.'s Rock Eagle, Unique In Learning The story of Rock Eagle began before recorded history when unknown tribes swarmed about Putnam County's hillsides erecting the mighty Rock Eagle mound. Today, the area teems with new life as thousands of Georgia 4H'ers and others write a modern story of educational training. Countless centuries ago, unknown tribes erected in what is now Georgia a mighty eagle mound of native stone - for what reasons or purposes modern man has not been able to decipher. For many years, people have marveled at the construction of this massive eagle spread on a rolling hillside in Putnam County. A Georgia First Now, thousands from throughout Georgia and the world come to Rock One of 54 cottages for pleasant living while you learn at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center. Eagle to visit the eagle and muse about things long gone; but they marvel at another creative effort which modern man has erected around Rock Eagle, a magnificent 4H center dedicated to serving the needs of the people of Georgia. For here, among the pines and surrounding a 110 acre lake, is a place unsurpassed for making learning fun. The Rock Eagle 4-H Center is the only state 4-H Center of its type in the world. When not in use by 4-H members, the center is open to other groups with planned educational programs. The center which was fifteen years old this past May has served more than 500,000 people. It is regional and national in scope. Visitors have come from every state in the nation and 42 countries throughout the world. Learning Facilities There are 54 masonry cottages lining the banks of the lake and three educational and three demonstration buildings, a beautiful chapel of native (Straight Line stone, an air-conditioned auditorium seating 1,232 people, and a dining hall capable of serving 1,200 an hour. In addition there are two swimming pools, the putt-putt golf course, miles I bought 2 new feather pillows. The bag they were in had sanitized and odorless on it but the pillows have such an odor we can't keep them in the house. I've had them hanging outside since Saturday and they still smell. What can be done to kill the odor? Mrs. M.D.H., Plainville of paved roads, and a lake which is a fisherman's paradise. Rock Eagle is many things to many people. They should not have any odor if properly processed. *** Edition Coming Is it safe to turn cows in on dried field peas? I have heard dried peas will kill cows. Mr. C.A.M., Townsend Dried field peas will bloat cows if too many are eaten. Before turning your cows on your peas, feed a large feeding of hay. This will "fill" your cows and they will gradually start on the peas. It is safe to let them remain in the pea field. *** How do you plant Poke weed? I have a large plant in my yard just loaded with berries and I would like to have a row in my garden next year. Mrs. J.F.B., Marietta Gather the berries after they have dried, save until next spring, and plant. This plant has been known to be a pest. DO NOT EAT THE BERRIES they are highly poisonous. PageS Wormwood -- Artemisia Absinthium, has been surrounded by superstition and awe since ancient times; being so sacred to Artemis, the nature goddess of ancient Greece, that people think the genus gets its botanical name from her. The plant grows wild but is seldom found in remote places. The small flowers are greenishyellow and if you wish to collect the herb in early fall, get the whole herb, flowers and all, and hang to dry in a warm room. From this dried herb comes the infusions of which the old herbalists sang the praises - one saying it will cure "the hypochondriacal disorders of studious, sedentary men," while another says that .if taken for a week one "will have no sickness after meals, will feel none of that fulness so frequent from indigestion." Always having had a high place in magic, the following love charm is from medieval England. On St. Luke's Eve, October 18, mix together a thimbleful each of wormwood, dried marigold flowers, dried marjoram and dried thyme, all crumbled fine. Add half a cup of water and simmer over low heat 7 minutes, then strain. Add a thimbleful of virgin honey and a thimbleful of vinegar, mix well and anoint yourself all over with this "goo," then repeat three times: "Saint Luke, Saint Luke, be kind to me, In dreams let me my true love see." Get into bed and that night you will dream of the one you will marry. Rock Eagle (Continued from page 1) Cooperative Extension Service of the University of Georgia. All groups must have planned programs, but the restful, comfortable surroundings make learning easy. Success Story The Rock Eagle story is a story of Georgia 4-H members who contributed their earnings and sought aid from other groups to make construction possible. Officially opened in 1955, the center is designed primarily for 4-H members, however, other groups are invited to use it when available. It is so designed that one large group or many smaller ones can use the facilities at the same time. For information write: Tommy Walton, State 4-H Leader Coop Extension Service, Athens, 30601. THE MARKET BULLETIN Dried Flower Arrangements Today, many homes in Georgia have taken on a more casual look with home furnishings tending to bring the outdoors inside. Dried arrangements aid in accomplishing this affect. There are many materials which may be used in dried arrangements. They may come from the fields, gardens, roadsides, or even streams. Some wild plants suitable for drying are Queen Anne's lace, Cattail, Milkweed, Red Clover, Johnson Grass, Pussy Willow, Jimson Weed, and Rabbit Tobacco. Cultivated plants often used for drying are Zinnias, Crape Myrtle, Dogwood, Holly, Corn Tassels, and Hydrangeas. Plants for drying should be gathered just as they reach maturity. Pick your flowers on a dry sunny day after the dew has evaporated. Cut them with a two inch stem stripping all foliage from the flowering plants. You should bend branches just as you want them before drying. There are several methods of drying flowers. One method is sand box drying. Use clean, dry sand. Damp sand will spot the color in your flowers. Get wooden boxes, large fruit juice or oil cans, or buckets and label with dates. Pour sand in containers to a depth of four inches. Place flowers upside down on top of four inch bed of sand, being careful not to let any flowers touch each other. Pour on more sand till flower heads are covered. Store in cool dark place (a closet or attic with ventilation) for two weeks. Then pour off and gently brush away sand. Flowers are then ready for use. One of the newest methods of drying flowers is using silica gel which is sold by chemical supply dealers or your local druggist can order it for you. Mix one-fourth pound Tel-Tale gel to five pounds 28-200 mesh silica gel. Pour mixture in container to a depth of two inches and insert flowers face up. Cover flowers with remaining mixture. Cover container and seal with freezing tape. Let remain one week before gently pouring mixture off. If you would like more information on making dried arrangements, please write Home Economist, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334. (Straight Line) :|: (Continued from page 1) j I do hope you will not refuse to answer this because it is unsigned after I state my reasons. About 3 years ago I bought a load of topsoil and a corner of my yard is full of yellow flowers from this. They are very pretty and I call them miniature sunflowers. They bloom in September. Last fall my mother told me they looked like marijuana. A county agent had some on display (as a warning) at a meeting of her Home Demonstration Club. I laughed it off and then a short time later I saw a picture of marijuana. I heard it has a musty odor. These plants smell that way. My husband wanted to dig and kill them. I'm reluctant to dig anything blooming and I suggested taking a sample to the police or Forestry service but he refused saying the police would never believe the truth and we would have a police record! He agreed to send a sample to you before he destroys my flowers. Please help. Unsigned We could have helped you much faster if you had signed your letter. All letters pertaining to matters such as this are kept confidential. Your plant is not marijuana but coneflower. We feel sure the police would have believed your story they're really nice people. We are publishing a picture of marijuana so you and others will know. The marijuana bloom is tiny, the size of the tip of your finger and not readily visible. It is a greenish-yellow. It is a bushy plant, with foliage from the ground up. To all those who want rid of something, (4 harmless, friendly, cunning, gentle little toads) crickets, mocking birds, etc., may I plead with you to read Rachel Carson's SILENT SPRING? It will show you how to get rid of every living thing of beauty that God created, or wait a bit and this plague and blight will have spread to your area and rid you of it all! How I'd love to have those 4 little toads! I had 4 when I built here that at dusk came to sit and catch bugs, flies, etc. 'round my doorsteps. None are left, here or elsewhere that I can learn. Our motto seems to be "IT'S ALIVE, KILL IT". I had 8 pairs of robins, 4 building almost in reach of my door, as well as almost every bird native to this state building here; yellow-bill cuckoo, (the only one to tear into tent caterpillars' webs and eat them) orchard and Baltimore orioles, tanager, cat-bird, indigo bunting, quail, etc., and Grackles, a destroyer of all other bird nests and eggs. It destroyed many of these but man with spray and gun did most of it, till I had 1 robin and 1 cuckoo pass through recently on the way south. If you see them, throw a crumb or two. They are not long for this world. May I suggest, too late, that we might have planted extra cherry trees, fig trees, etc. for the birds? May I suggest that the widow might have much worse trouble than hogs! Nothing is said about the old man being single! I don't think any of the questions call for levity! The ones asking are serious. Mrs. V.M., Clarkrange, Tenn. We appreciate your opinion and feel sure our readers will. You might be interested to know that the widow called us long distance to tell us that she had taken our advice, taken the cake over, and the man cleaned up his hog pen and the two are seeing each other "steadily" now. Straight line knew they were single all the time. Sometimes levity helps in this world. However, others wondered about this, too. Also there are health regulations that could have been imposed if necessary. We meant no harm.
