FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Wednesday. September !). 1970 \U:\IHKR 37 Jim Gillis Better Roads 1969 Gross Farm Income For Georgia The Interstate Highway System is a good example of how good roads can lead to a better life, and a longer life, for everyone. Reports just finished this summer by the Federal Highway Administration show that these Interstate Highways have reduced travel time between major cities by an average of 10 per cent. This reduction is much more in many cases. For example, in 1956, a trip from Washington to Atlanta took an average of 18 I/ 2 hours, while today, the same trip can be made in 12 I/ 2 hours. And everyone in South Georgia knows the time that has been cut from a trip between Atlanta and Valdosta. The Interstates have saved $15.8 billion nationally, yes, that's billions, by reducing accidents. These are actual dollars saved from reduced property damage and hospital costs and do not count the reduction of family tragedies of injury and death and this may be the most important of all the savings of the Interstate program. (Our guest columnist this week is Mr. Jim L. Qillis, Sr., Director of the State Highway Department of Georgia, No. 2 Capitol Square, Atlanta 30334.) _____________ Nationwide, in real dollars, this 42,500-mile system will save motorists $107 billion by the time it is fully complete across the country. This is $37 billion more than is estimated to build the entire system. All farmers know that a good transportation system is essential. Produce without markets wouldn't mean much. Cattle without feed wouldn't grow fat. Besides the sun and the rain and a little bit of luck, the major item in today's farming is a good road system. The world's largest farmer's market sits on Interstate 75 just south of Atlanta, and many Georgians sell their produce there the same day it is picked, or the day after, all because of good roads. More than $95 million worth of rural roads have been paved during the last 12 years. That covers more than 200 bridges and almost 2500 miles of roads. In addition, more than 12,750 miles of our state highway system has been resurfaced during the same period to bring it up to good standards for modern traffic needs. We will continue these programs, and we will continue the Interstate program. We will finish it in Georgia as quickly as the federal-aid money is available to spend. But, our road needs are continuing to grow taster than the money (Continued on page 8) (Straight Line| Gross income to Georgia farmers from farm marketings and Govern- ment payments set a record high in 1969 at $1,233,966,000, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. However, it is estimated (figures are not yet available) that net earnings will be down in most instances due to the increased cost to farmers for their equipment and other operating expenses. The 1969 gross cash farm receipts represent a 10 percent increase over 1968 and is the largest one year increase in Georgia since 1958. For five years now the cash receipts have topped the one billion dollar mark. LIVESTOCK Livestock and livestock products totaled $740,445,000 and accounted for 60 percent of the total farm money. Compare this with the 1940 graph which shows only 22.8 percent of the farm income in Georgia was from livestock products 30 years ago. CROPS Gross income from all crops amounted to $407,432,000, making up one third of the total. Government payments accounted for seven percent of the income at $86,089,000 for the year. Government payments are not itemized in the 1940 graph but are included in the total cash farm income figure for that year of $172,771,000. Last April my husband and his brother purchased some registered Hampshire hogs from a breeder in Baxley. We were told we would receive our registration papers in four weeks. Neither of us has received them. If these breeders don't have papers on these hogs, why are the prices so high on unregistered hogs? Mrs. W.L.M., Townsend if the other man owns the registration papers, they have to be transferred through the Hampshire Breeding Association. If the hogs are young and have never been registered, then they have to be registered with the Association and then transferred to you. We contacted the breeder you bought these hogs from and he has never received the papers from the Hampshire Breeding Association. As soon as he gets them, you'll get your papers. Our cows got in my pear and apple trees and nibbled the bark pretty badly. Will it hurt them or cause a bad freeze to kill them? What can be done? M. Hall, Grovetown Paint the bark of the trees with a water soluble asphalt such as Trecote. This should protect your trees. What is the common name for the Achimenes plant? Mrs. W. T., College Park Magic Flower, nut orchid, or Widower's Tear. Please tell me how to get rid of "prickly pear" or cactus plant in my pasture. The cows won't even graze near it. R.T.M., Hephzibah Spray with 2, 4-5T mixed in diesel fuel for range areas. Banvel D is used around homes for control. *** My front steps, made of brick, are covered with some kind of moss. What will get rid of it? Mrs. T.T., Glennville Clorox or lime. September 9, 1970 We Get Letters Dear Editor: I am a native of Blairsville, Georgia, and enjoy reading the MARKET BULLETIN each week. I would like to know if any of your readers have a recipe for old fashioned fruit cake using one cup jelly to make the cake. Mrs. Angie Mauney 200 West Moretz Avenue Charlotte, North Carolina 28206 Dear Editor: Seeing the item in the BULLETIN several weeks ago on 4H being appealing to the young people of today is certainly true. My son, John Jr., thought it was strictly related to farm projects, but in the 6th grade found this untrue. He entered in the 4-H Club Congress in Atlanta a project in electronics and won third place. He plans to try again next year for first place. I am very proud of the progress he has made in 4-H and I am grateful to them for all they have done for him. I understand the 4-H has 40 different projects to offer and am sure some would appeal to all youth of today. It is found everywhere and is a native American plant not to be confused with the European pennyroyal, AAentha pulegium. The leaves are small and oval with pale-violet flowers. Gather and dry in a cool room as too much heat drives away some ot the flavor. When dry, store in tightly sealed truit jars and when ready to make tea, make as you do regular tea, using about a teaspoonful to every cup of tea. Do not boil pennyroyal, or you will have a very fragrant kitchen but a flavorless tea. Pennyroyal tastes so good that you need no other excuse for drinking it, but it is reputed to have many medicinal virtues. It gets one of its common names, "squaw mint", because of the many ways the Indians used it in their medicines. It is a natural insect repellent and when bothered by mosquitoes or gnats out in the woods, crush a handful and rub on all exposed skin. It is just about as effective as commercial repellents and lasts about as long - certainly having a more pleasant smell. Using the fresh herb in your doghouse will keep away fleas -while the dried herb, made into sachets and packed away with your woolens, will keep away moths and give your clothes a much better aroma than when packed with most commercial repellents. Better Roads (Continued from page 1) to build your roads. We are submitting a report to the State Budget Bureau showing needs of more than $225 million a year for the next two years over and above the money we will get from the gas tax. Right now, it would take all of our money tor the next fifteen years or more to improve roads we need to improve in just the next five years. At the end of that time, we'll be even further behind. Maintenance costs are also growing every day, and, if we don't maintain our roads and bridges properly, they will soon have to be replaced entirely and at even greater cost. Right now, we could spend $200 million on urgent maintenance needs over the state. That is more than three-quarters of the total money the Highway Department will get from THE MARKET BULLETIN Horses Of Georgia Shetland Pony Ponies of all kinds make up about one-fifth of the horses and ponies for the state. Of these, Shetlands are, by far, the predominant breed. Twelve percent of all horses and ponies in the state are Shetlands -- a little over seventeen thousand head. Many of the people knowledgeable in the state's horse and pony industry contend that there are currently fewer Shetlands in the state than a few years ago. (Second in a series on Georgia horses. Information was compiled by Pat Parks of the Crop Reporting Service for use in the recently published Georgia Horse and Pony Survey.) The exact origin of the Shetland Pony is unknown. The earliest mention of the breed, in the sixteenth century, placed them on a number of the Shetland Islands off the northern coast of Scotland. The original use of these small animals was as a pack animal, but they later demonstrated remarkable stamina in the coal mines of England as draft ponies. The Shetland was first introduced into the United States about the middle of the nineteenth century, neither the time nor place is known. Today, the Shetland is predominately a child's pet. He stands about 40 inches high arid has more refined head, neck and legs than his stocky ancestors, which appeared more like miniature draft horses. Lines of high quality Shetlands with extreme quality, flash and distinctive gait have been developed both here and in England for society driving. I Straight Line) |: (Continued from page 1) x Please tell me how to successfully freeze eggplant. Mrs. J.N.Y., Atlanta Choose either Black Beauty or Florida Highbush eggplant, harvest before the seeds become mature and when the color is uniformly dark. Wash, peel, and slice I/ 3 inch thick. Prepare quickly, just enough eggplant for one scalding. Scald four minutes in one gallon of boiling water containing 41/2 teaspoon citric acid or 1 I/ 2 cup of lemon juice. Cool, drain, and package. *** I have a goose that will start laying right away. Should I leave all the eggs in the nest or take them out every day until she sets? I want some little ones. B. L., Decatur Our poultry division advises the removal of eggs from the nest when laid, store in a cool place, and then place all of the eggs back under the goose when she is ready to set. The hatchability will be better due to a high rise in the temperature of the egg each time the bird sets. both the state and federal governments this year for all road building. You and I are paying for our roads. On bad roads we pay increased operating costs for our cars and trucks. We spend longer hours traveling and with less comfort. We have more accidents, pay increased insurance rates and see more suffering. It can cost less. The report on the Interstate Highways shows that better roads do cost less. But you will have to pay a little more now. And you must see to it that all the money you pay for roads goes to build better highways.
