FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy /rviri. Commissioner VOLUME 56 Tommy Leaf Blight Hurts Ga. Corn Growers Since 1923, southern corn growers have been bothered occasionally with a fungus disease known as Southern leaf blight. But this year, during the past few weeks, the disease has hit harder than ever before and has caused serious damage to corn crops throughout Georgia and other southern states.' Although South Georgia was the hardest hit, no area of the state has escaped the damage of the blight. The hot, humid, and windy weather was ideal for the blight and is being blamed for the seriousness of the disease. In addition, the Texas male sterile | cytoplasm hybrid corn t h a t h a s been used so extensively in Georgia this year has no resistance to this disease. The extent of the damage and costtocorn ___ growers is still not known and cannot be finally determined until after harvest. But we are sure that many farmers will suffer heavy losses. Extension service specialists have advised that some corn can be salvaged by cutting silage. This week a meeting is being held in Athens of corn specialists, researchers, corn breeders and others to work towards .preventing leaf blight from again ever ruining Georgia's corn crop. A representative of this department will attend that meeting. Grower meetings are also being planned throughout the state prior to next year's planting-time to advise of varieties or methods that may be used to prevent extensive damage from Southern leaf blight. The Extension Service, researchers, county agents, growers and breeders are to be commended for their fast action and forward thinking in trying to make the best of a very bad situation and in trying to prevent this from happening again in the future. I can assure you, also, that the Department of Agriculture will work with growers and breeders in anyway possible and will be glad to hear from any of you if we may be of assistance. New Peanut Varieties Two new Spanish peanut varieties Spancross and Tifspan have produced yields seven to nine percent above the widely-grown commercial variety Starr in tests here. ' The varieties were developed and released by scientists at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station, University of Georgia College of Agriculture. Researchers say the yield increases could mean a boost in gross income to Georgia growers of $3.5 to $4.6 million annually. Wednesday. August 12, 1970 NUMBER 33 Irvin Requests 5th Week Buyers On Leaf Markets Commissioner of Agriculture Tom- my Irvin wired the chairman of the U. S. Flue Cured Tobacco Market- ing Committee last week requesting that at least 16 sets of buyers remain on the Georgia-Florida flue-cured tobacco auction markets for the fifth week of sales. "A conservative estimate is that we will have 20 to 25 million pounds of tobacco remaining unsold at that Fresh produce is checked regularly at the wholesale and retail outlets by Georgia Department of Agriculture for freshness, contamination, wholesomeness, quality and proper labeling. Joe-Pye-Weed, sometimes called trumpet-weed or purple boneset, is the common name of Eupatorium maculatum. The bonesets or thoroughworts comprise a genus of over 500 species of chiefly tropical American herbs of the Compositae Family. Joe-Pye-Weed can grow as tall as seven to nine feet in moist ground and is found throughout the United States. In parts of the country it is as common as the goldenrods and asters which appear at about the same time. Summer is almost over when the tall weeds begin to tinge with "crushed raspberry" all over the roadsides. These purplish-pink flower heads, composed entirely of tubular blossoms, grow in large clusters at or near the summit of the stem. These tubular blossoms possibly gave reason for the weed being called trumpet-weed. "Joe Pye" is said to be the name of an Indian doctor in Massachusetts that used the plant as a cure in New England...giving it the name Joe-Pye-Weed. Produce Checked (Continued from page 1) near the product to which it refers. For instance, when oranges and grapefruits are displayed side by side, the names "oranges" and "grapefruits" must be placed so that it is obvious which fruit the name identifies. Labeling on prepackaged goods (those packaged outside the store) must include the name of the packer and his address. Items packaged in the store must include the name of the item, its price and net weight the weight of the product with the weight of all wrappings deducted. Produce which is graded should be done so properly; that is, it should not be rated any higher than its actual worth. Produce is rated numerically (No. 1, No. 2, . . . ), unlike meats or eggs which are graded alphabetically (AAA, AA, A, B . . . ). The top grade of produce is Grade No. 1, which is decided on the> basis of its size and dimensions, and its uniformity. The inspector also checks to make sure that the item is properly wrapped: wrapping materials should completely enclose the product, leaving no openings. In addition, wrappings should not attempt to camouflage products with colors, designs, and so on. These inspectors have quite an extensive job, which includes checking produce for freshness, soundness, true labeling and proper packaging. He makes a thorough check in all stores to assure consumers of receiving produce of the highest quality. He is really the housewife's invisible helper. The Fall Farm Land edition of the BULLETIN will be published October 7. Deadline for land notices to appear in this issue is Sept. 28. Mail your notices early. Please list the county or the section of the state as shown in the map above in which the land is for sale or wanted. SSX (Straight Line! $'"' (Continued from page 1) i^^^J :: This could be due to several reasons, too much water, not enough water, or not enough fertilizer. As you didn't include your name, we can't ask any one to contact you. May we suggest that you contact Mr. Mickey Palmer, Treutlen County Agent. *** I have 2 Catalpa trees in my yard that have never had worms on them. How do I get worms started? I have been told that a moth will lay eggs if trash and leaves are left under the tree as the worms enter the ground to hibernate. L.W., Monticello Borrow some Catalpa worms from a neighbor, put them on the tree, and leave the litter under the tree. Moths will emerge the following year and lay eggs. *** I need information on restoring a 1917 G.M.C. truck. I need both motor and body repair information. Where can I go to get this information? J.R.P., Augusta We decided to go right to the experts--G.M.C. Truck and Coach Division --for this. It seems you have one of the first models manufactured. Although you will have to go through a franchised dealer, G.M.C. is going to help you locate one near you so you can get that truck running again. *** I have a shaggy dog in my yard that someone dropped out. The dog is plagued with mange, mites, or summer itch. Her hair is falling out and she has raw spots on her body. Please tell me and others sympathic towards animals what will cure this ailment. Mrs. A.G.H., Dublin Please take this poor animal to your nearest Veterinarian. From your description, this dog could have 1 of 3 types of mange mites--only dif ferentiated by microscopic examination--and possibly nutritional distur bances. Sick animals as well as sick people need medical attention. *** Can you tell me of anything that will kill Bermuda grass? S.R.L., Chatsworth Dalapon spray will but it will also kill all other grass. *** I bought a ball point pen advertised as perfect on T.V. Writes every time, even after being tied to skates, skis, etc. It wrote for one week then stopped. So, I bought another. It wrote for one week, then stopped. I would send both of these pens back to the manufacturer if I could find the address. K.S., Dahlonega We found it plus a representative. He has already contacted you and now you have 2 new pens. We hope these give better service. RESPONSE To keep birds out of grapes and fruit trees, take a black rubber hose 3 or 4 feet long and coil it around the tree or in the vine.
