FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner VOLUME 56 Wednesday, June 3, 1970 NUMBER 22 Tommy Irvin Ga. Beekeepers Hardship Imposed On Pig Sales Several weeks ago the Georgia Department of Agriculture received notification of new U.S.D.A. guidelines for feeder and breeder pig sales and markets. According to the directive from the federal government, these guidelines would have to be implemented by July 1, 1970, in orderforthe U.S.D.A. to continue to participate in the statefederal hog chole r a eradication program. We in the State Department of Agriculture felt these guidelines, specifically one calling for the paving of all sales barns which handle feeder and breeder pig sales, were uncalled for and unjust. I especially felt that they should in no way effect our cholera eradication program as not one case of cholera in the past three years has been traced to .a sales barn. I was, therefore, very happy to learn last week from animal health officials of U.S.D.A. that we had succeeded in obtaining a reversal of their position on this particular requirement as it effects the cholera eradication program. As it stands now, all feeder and breeder pig sales destined for interstate trade must be held on impervious (such as concrete) floors. However, intrastate sales will not be effected and the state-federal hog cholera eradication program will not be effected. The Georgia Livestock Market Association has also passed a resolution calling for the lifting of this requirement. Although I am presently relieved that these guidelines will not effect our cholera program, I am aware that they will work a financial hardship on many of our markets that will not be eligible for interstate sales as -they presently exist. I will continue to support the Georgia Livestock Market Association in their efforts to have this restriction lifted and allow all sanitary, licensed, inspected sales markets to continue to hold feeder and breeder pig sales under our present regulations without hampering their interstate market. 1 Inside 3 Letters ...................... 2 | ji; Recipes ....._...._........... 5 ; : | What Is 81 ; ; Ag Calendar.............. 8 % &:W:::::::::::::^^ Must Register In Disease Fight Production of honey, beeswax, and package and queen bees brings more than $2,000,000 annually to Georgia beekeepers. Legislation was passed during the last session of the General Assembly to help prevent the spread of bee diseases which cause losses to the beekeeping industry as well as the hobby beekeeper. The bill requires all beekeepers to register with the Georgia Department of Agriculture and provides for an inspection of the bees at least once every 18 months by an authorized state inspector. It also provides for indemnity payments for hives of bees ordered destroyed because of disease. An appropriation was made to cover the possible cost of the indemnity payments for July 1, 1970 to July i, 1971. In June We Salute The Dairy Industry If you have not yet registered, you can use the form on Page 8. Additional forms may be obtained from the Department of Agriculture or your County Agent. 1970 marks the 33rd year the dairy industry of Georgia and the nation have joined hands in celebrating June Dairy Month. The Department of Agriculture cooperates in this observance and salutes the dairy producer and distributor for providing Georgia consumers with the finest milk that can be purchased in the United States. Straight Line Can you tell me why my tomatoes wilt and die when they start blooming? Mrs. David Rozier, Townsend The probable cause of the wilt in your tomatoes is Fusarium Wilt. The wilt will stay in the soil indefinitely. You should use a resistant variety such as Marion and fumigate the soil since rootknot nematode will break down the resistance of the plant to wilt. I have a Water Oak tree that has something like small brown snail hulls all around the limbs. The hulls are empty but it looks like that side of the tree is trying to die. It looks like it is being sapped to death. What could it be? Mrs. Robert Spires, Wray Our Entomology Division tells us that the insect shells you see on your tree are the empty cases of the locust. This is the year for heavy emergence for the 17-year locust. This is also called periodical cicada. We also have the dogday cicada which broods every 2 to 5 years. This is called July fly locally. They damage roots of trees and small twigs on trees. Help! Bumblebees! We live on a big acreage in the country and they are literally eating my house. They are even coming through the thick front door. The exterminator does not know what to do. Can you help me? Mary Frances Wells, Stockbridge The bumble bees you referred to are carpenter bees that bore into wood to raise their brood. They will also overwinter in these holes. Control is to spray into the holes with Lindane or chloradane or dieldrin. There are 1305 Grade A milk producers in Georgia producing over one billion pounds of milk each year. These dairymen have about $450 million dollars invested in their farm operations. They contribute more than $60 ^million annually to Georgia's economy. There are 40 dairy plants in the state that distribute 118,400,000 gallons of milk to Georgians each year. These processors and distributors have $175,000,000 investment in their operations and employ over 6,000 people. In 1969, milk sales amounted to $120,000,000 with another $17,500,000 spent for ice cream. Georgians drink about three million pounds of grade A fluid milk each day. This is about 325,000 gallons daily or 118,000,000 gallons annually. All milk produced and sold in Georgia is checked regularly by the Georgia Department of Agriculture foi; sanitation, purity, and quality. Georgia consumers are provided the best tasting, highest quality milk that can be bought. We salute the dairy industry of Georgia and urge all consumers to celebrate June Dairy Month with a large glass of cold milk. Bamboo is our problem. We planted it in 1940 to provide a wind break. This ii has certainly done. But we want to know how to keep it in bounds, other than by hand, which we are no longer able to do. Also where can we find recipes for preparing and preserving it for our own use? This variety grows to a maximum height of around 30 feet. It must be an edible variety because the cows, horses, and formally pigs ate it with relish. Mrs. James Milton, Keysville (Continued on page 8) PESTICIDKS DEFINED What are pesticides? Maxcy Nolan, entomologist with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, offers this practical definition. Pesticides are chemicals used to kill pests which eat away on man's food and fiber supplies. He points out that about 80 percent of all animal life is insect life. Cowslip--Caltha palustris, more commonly known as marsh marigold, borders our springs and wet and soggy meadows where cattle drink, giving it the name cowslip. The bright golden blossoms grow to about an inch and a half and resemble large buttercups but do not last longfalling off and being replaced by clusters of seed crammed pods. The early English poets referred to it as Mary Gowles or the "golden eyes" of the Mary-bud from which our common variety of marigold got its name. It is still soabundantalong certain English rivers that the ground looks like it is paved with gold when they overflow into the banks of the rivers. Cowslips can also mean "spring time on the stove," being a favorite pot herb with lots of people being far superior, some say, to spinach. The flower buds are also edible. There are two things to watch out for if you are going to enjoy the cowslip. First, it must be served as a pot herb as the raw leaves contain the poison helleborin-which is destroyed by cooking. Always gather cowslips by themselves to avoid the mistake of mixing them with salad greens. Secondly, ordinary care must be taken not to include any of the easily differentiated poisonous hellebore or water hemlocks that sometimes grow in the same places. The dark green leaves and thick fleshy stems are at their best before the plant flowers. Boil them for an hour in two changes of salted water, then lift out and top with butter. They can be served in many ways as a boiled green, especially good creamed as they go well with parmesan cheese. The leaves and stems aren't the only edible portions of the cowslip as you can pickle the buds, soaking them first for several hours in salted water, drain and then simmer them in spiced vinegar-then they take on the flavor of capers._______ NOT TASTY Meat not packaged in moisture and vapor-proof containers o^ wrappings or meat kept in the food freezer loo long loses flavor and texture, recording to Miss Nelle Thrash, iood preservation specialisi with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. *** Georgia's commercial slaughter plants were busy in 1969. The State Crop Reporting Service indicates they slaughtered 323,900 head of cattle last year. THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, June 3, 1970 (Straight Line (Continued from page 1) ^^ Agricultural Calendar Mr. W. 0. Hawley of the U. S. Plant Introduction Station in Savannah tells us that one of the best ways of controlling bamboo is to cut it back to where you want it and then cut the new shoots back when they come up. Since the new shoots emerge in the spring season, it will be necessary to do this only once each year. Our Entomology Division recommends applying Dalapon in the summer and fall months. Also any of the soil sterilant materials, such as Sodium chlorate plus borate or Hyvar X (bromacil) will give excellent control but no other plants will grow there for several months. The tender young shoots can be cooked like fresh corn. Preserving would be similar to that for beets, corn, potatoes, etc. All of the Temperate Zone bamboos are edible in the very young shoot stage but must be cooked before eaten. Meetings June 3 -- 1 PM -- Breeders of Simmental Cattle meeting; others interested in this new breed are invited to attend. Purpose of meeting is to dis cuss possibility of organizing State Simmental Assn. Holi day Inn, Perry. Neil Manley, 316 Fortson Dr., Athens 30601. Farm Sales Events I am having a luncheon and want to serve something different. Someone suggested sugared grapes but I can't seem to find a recipe. Can you help me? Mrs. Charles Hardy, Decatur The Home Economics Division of the Cooperative Extension Service in Athens gives a recipe for sugared grapes. Dip the grapes in egg white that is slightly beaten and roll them in granulated sugar. The grapes should then be chilled for three hours. For variety dip the grape clusters in slightly beaten egg white, drain, and then roll in dry. fruit flavored gelatin. These should also be chilled for 3 hours. Sugared grapes are an attractive addition to any luncheon. Earlier this year I purchased a hindquarter of beef weighing 129 pounds. When I picked my meat up, after it had been cut up, it weighed 90 pounds. This was a weight loss of 39 pounds. Is this weight loss too great or about right? Name withheld by request, Savannah Dr. Watson. Director of the Meat Inspection Division, tells us that your weight loss is about normal according to USDA regulations. A carcass or side of beef is normally sold by its "hanging" or gross weight, and the amount of usable meat you take home to put in your freezer will be considerably less. For a beef carcass cutting loss could vary from 20 to 30 percent or even more. A 25 percent cutting loss from a 300-pound side of beef would give you 225 pounds of usable meat cuts. You had about a 30 percent cutting loss which is normal. We realize that with today's meat prices people are concerned about getting the full value for their money and we appreciate vour concern. No other beast or bird, no other man-operated manufacturing machine or plant is more efficient in the production of food for man. She takes the grasses and grains of the fields and converts them into the most perfect single food milk. She produces on the average from an acre of crops: 2,190 pounds of milk which contains 72 pounds of digestible protein and 712 units (Therms) of energy! She is the number one soil conservationist, building the fertility and the productiveness of the land. Prosperity follows the dairy cow. She appears with man on the stone tablets that record the earliest appearance of the human race. Man has migrated more often in search of green pastures for his cows than for any other cause. A school boy wrote: ''The cow is a mobile, animated machine housed in unprocessed leather. One end is equipped with a mower, grinder and other standard equipment, including bumpers, headlights, wingflaps and fog horn. At the other end is a milk dispenser and insect repellent. "Centrally located is a conversion plant consisting of a combination storage and fermentation vat, three converters in series and a complicated arrangement of conveyor tubes. The machine is also equipped with a central heating plant, pumping system and air-conditioning. "Although mysterious and secret, this plant is unpatented. It is available in various sizes, colors and output ranging from one to 20 tons of milk a.year." (Reprinted from "Rural Georgia.") Let's go down to the farmer's mart To see what they've got there! To see the greenest roasting ears With silk like Jeannie's hair! We'll take a stroll down the rows of stalls And hear the farmer's call "Watermelon? Cantaloupe? Peaches, anyone?" Thump it! Squeeze it! Pinch! It's fun! Crowder peas, butterbeans, green and red Hot pepper, Tomatoes in a basket. Squash, green beans and turnip greens. They'll tell you the price if you ask it. Sweet potatoes, collard greens, Red and yellow apples Onions, okra, mustard greens, Smiles and sunshine dapples! Oh, we had fun at the farmer's market! And purchased more than we need. But, we came home with a glow in our heart And a car load of Nature's seed! Mrs. C. E. Dixon, Sr. Pig Sale, Hagan Stockyard, Hagan. PINCHING MUMS If you want to get bushy, compact mums, you will need to do some pinching. That's the advice of Troy Keeble, horticulturist with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. The pinching out of young tips will stimulate branching of the plants. Discontinue the operation in mid or late summer. TIMBER LEADER Where does Georgia rank in the harvest of sawtimber? Foresters with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service report that only four or five states in the nation harvest as much sawtimber as does the Peach State.
