The Decade 
The dare of the decade is a great challenge for us youth as we plunge into the infant stage of the "Soaring Seventies." 
The plunge isn't what baffles us; it's the way we direct this path between "take-off" and the actual "landing," which makes us the leaders of our great America. Time itself will take care of the certain beginning and the certain ending, but we youth know it is up to us to face the realities between the two times. 
The beginning of the Seventies is in the past, and we can't change any of it, but everything we do now will 
affect the remainder of the time before we reach our duties as leaders. 
Through guidance, love, and underst a n d i ft g from the leaders today, we are provided with opporI tunities to grow up and become more independent as we face our challenges. It is an honor to be a part of the Future Hornernakers of America with its high standards. Yes, I am proud to be a future Homemaker of America proud to be an American teenager. We youth recognize the debt of gratitude we owe to the leaders of the past and the leaders of today. We youth know

we are challenged to educate our hearts and minds to the possibilities of keeping that which is ''good," and we dare to change that which is deteriorating to our society. 
Each one has a special part that he alone must perform, and every one of these parts makes up our society. John Donne, in the seventeenth century, said that he believed ''Mankind is of one author and is one volume" which he stated in the familiar words "no man is an island unto himself." Therefore, everyone is responsible for the kind of society we have, and this can not be denied. 
The Great American image of the Seventies will be one we will claim with pride, and this can be built as we think positively and act constructively. I am confident that we Future Homemakers of America and other youth groups will face the challenge as we lay the groundwork of preparing ourselves to face the future with high hopes and confident ambitions of making a better world of the one we inherit. 
Equally sure am I that youth will face realities only by keeping God as the core of their work and having the determination necessary for satisfying results.

Checking For Pesticide Residue 
Georgia Department of Agriculture food labs regularly check all foods consumed in Georgia for pesticide residue. Fresh vegetables are brought in from the fields daily for checking before they are harvested and reach the market place. By giving one-day service on these reports, the food never reaches the market place if the residue is above tolerance and the farmer may have an opportunity to correct a residue problem so that his crop will not be destroyed. The food is first placed in a chopper where it is reduced in size before being mixed with a solvent and blended to a liquid state. Fat and other plant constituents are then separated from the sample before it is fed into a gas chromatograph to determine whether pesticides are present.

Southern Trends 
For The Seventies 
Indications are that agriculture in the 70's will experience a surge in per farm gross income and that profits will be slightly higher per farmer as net income increases moderately and as fewer farmers share in the profits. 
By the end of the 1970's gross income per farm should be up about 50% and net income up about 20% from 1969. Gross income in 1969 for all U.S. farmers reached $54.5 billion dollars, a record high. Net farm income for 1969 was $16 billion. 
In the early part of the 1970's, this $16 billion net income will drop back to about $15 billion because of the current soft economy. However, by 1975 farmers can expect a total gross

of almost $63 billion, or $18 billion 
dollars more than in 1969, and a net 
income of about $17 billion dollars. The 50% rise in gross income, with 
only a moderate increase in net income, for the 70's means that much more money will be spent for the production of farm goods, and the result of these increased costs and declining profits will be fewer farmers by 1980. 
The experts feel that by the end of the decade, only 600,000 to 700,000 commercial farmers will be producing and earning 99% of the total U.S. demand for farm goods and farm in-

I planted a plum tree 2 years ago. It never produced fruit and I found out that several more trees were needed for pollination. Last January I planted a peach tree in my back yard and want to know if this one tree will produce peaches or if I should plant another.

2 teaspoons soda 2 teaspoons ginger 1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon !/2 teaspoon cloves Vz teaspoon nutmeg 1 cup boiling water 
 
Mix sugar, molasses and shortening together. Add beaten eggs and mix well. Add sifted dry ingredients and beat till well blended. Then add boiling water and beat until smooth. The batter will be thin. Pour into greased and floured oblong pan, 9" x 14", and bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes.

% cup sugar (white) 2 cups water grated rind of 2 lemons dash of salt 2 Tablespoons cornstarch !4 cup butter % cup lemon juice 
Mix together sugar and cornstarch. Add water and cook until thick and clear. Remove from heat and stir in remaining ingredients. Pour over gingerbread.

We talked with Mr. Maxey Nolan. Extension Entomologist in Athens, who specified three steps to effective elimination of your mosquito problem: 
1. Eliminate vegetation growing around the edge of the lake in shallow water. The sun keeps this shallow water warm and the vegetation provides a productive breeding ground for mosquitoes. 
2. Have the edge of the bank drop to a depth of 18 to 24 inches. This depth drop off will be sufficient to discourage the mosquitoes from breeding. 
3. Stock the lake with Gambusia(sp) fish, better known as mosquito fish. These fish are about the size of minnows and live on mosquito larvae. They will not interfere with swimming or fishing. Tropical fish stores are a better source of the Gambusia fish than commercial fish hatcheries. 
 
JEWEL WEED 
Jewelweed -- wild touch-me-not or snapweed -- Impatiens capensis, was given this name because its leaves are unwettable as rain will stand on the leaves in round drops shining like jewels -without ever wetting the leaf surface. The name of touch-menot or snapweed because of the snapping sound made by the seed pods when touched if they are ripe. It bears pretty flowers which are butter-yellow and these are followed by slipper-shaped seed pods. 
As a medicinal herb it is noted as an emergency treatment against poison ivy. A great many believe that if one has accidentally brushed against poison ivy, rubbing the exposed part with fresh jewelweed that has been crushed in the hands will keep any rash from developing. Since the two plants grow over almost the same range and have identical soil they are often found growing near one another. 
In several summer camps the person in charge of first aid boils down large quantities and uses this concentrated juice to wash exposed parts to prevent the rash from developing and also to treat the rash if it should develop. Several poison ivy commercial lotions are extracts of this plant. The homemade lotion is made by boiling down a pot of jewelweed covered with water until it is about half its original volume. It will not keep too long in the refrigerator but it will work by making ice cubes of it and storing. 
Early settlers learned from the Indians to use this weed; not only in curing poison ivy rash but in treating itch, unhealthy scalp, athlete's foot and other kinds of dematis that we now know are fungal in origin. The following paragraph is taken from the 195051 Yearbook of Agriculture, published by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. 
It is a quotation from an article called "Antibiotics That Come From Higher Plants," written by P. S. Schaffer. "At the University of Vermont, Thomas Sproston, Jr., and associates tested 73 plant extracts, directing particular attention toward those that show fungicidal properties. The most active were obtained from Impatiens - (Wild touch-me-not.).

I am interested to know what causes blight on fruit trees. A neighbor of

Farming In '70s

The 2 million non-commercial farmers existing in 1969 will decrease by 50% to fewer than 1 million in 1980. These farmers will be retiring from the farm for more lucrative occupations, but no one will be taking their places. Increased production per acre and large farm operations will be required to fill this void. 
Agriculture in the South over the next ten years will be shaped by the same technological and changing economic and social forces shaping the agriculture for the entire nation; however, agriculture in the South will be distinguished by the region's move to close the "farming gap" between it and other regions of the country, which have enjoyed greater prosperity. 
Some farm experts expect the South by mid 1970 to lead the nation in its rate of increase in farm size, to take greater advantage of the opportunities for farm mechanization, and be able on large acreages of level land to compete with the Midwestern farmers in filling expanded national and world demands for grains and food stuffs. 
Between 1959 and 1964, the average farm size in the South increased from 220.9 to 256.7 acres. At the same time, the total number of farms has been declining from 1,313,064 in 1964 to 1,571,608 in 1969. 
In 1969, 8% of the farms in the South accounted for over- half of the region's farm sales. To increase their volume and pay added costs of mechanization, an increasing number of these farmers will be operating tracts of land rented from other farmers in the 1970's.

Competition to find the state's heaviest watermelon will be held during the eighth annual Watermelon Day at the Atlanta State Farmers' Market, Sunday, June 28. 
A $25 savings bond prize will go to the grower of the heaviest melon in each of four variety categories Charleston Gray, Congo, Cobb Gem, and Black Diamond. Plus, a $100 savings bond to the grower of the heaviest melon over all. 
Georgia Watermelon growers are invited to bring their entries to the Market by 12:30 p.m. for judging. 
Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin says he expects some 35,000 Georgians to come out and enjoy the festivities, which will include a free slice of ice cold watermelon for every visitor and a country music show.

should be in a particularly favorable spot to share in the increased demands for food stuffs in the U.S. Our lead in poultry production, for example, puts the South in an especially bright spot to supply the increasing world-wide demand for poultry meats. 
Southern farmers should also capture from the Corn Belt and Plains states some of the gains expected in soybeans and feed grains for the 70's. 
Cotton will probably not make up as large a part of the region's total income as other commodities expand. 
Tobacco production will remain confined to about the same areas. But there will be larger acreages per operating unit to justify the needed mechanization.
