FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner VOLUME 56 Jim L. Gillis Jr. Soil Stewardship Observed In State Soil Stewardship Week, a nationwide observance which places emphasis on man's obligation to God as stewards of the soil, water, and other related resources, is being observed in Georgia May 3-10, in churches throughout the state and by many federal anG state organizations. "Resources and Renewal," the theme of this year's observance, underscores the responsibility which each citizen has in dealing forthrightly with current issues involving stewardship of renewable natural resources. Within this century, and especially during the 60s, the approach to soil stewardship and resource management has been undergoing revision and renewal at an unprecedented rate. The population has steadily increased, imposing larger and larger demands for the products of the land and for the use of water and all the related resources. To complicate that development there has been a major emigration from farms and rural areas. Thousands of small farms have been con- (Our guest columnist this week is James L. Gillis, Jr., Chairman, Georgia State Soil and Water Conservation Committee, Sofer- ton, Ga.) solidated into larger units. Corporation farming has emerged in sufficient proportions to worry conservationists as well as others concerned about the character of agriculture and the quality of rural life. Another development of the 60s was the "one man, one vote," decision by the Supreme Court that resulted in the balance of conservation political power shifting to the cities and suburbs. The principles of ecology, stressing the vital interrelationships of all resources and the people who use them, have been increasingly recognized. These are just some of the many developments which have considerably altered the standards of soil stewardship and the elements of resource management. Every person and every institution in the land is caught in this swirling pool of renewal. Conservationists are aware of these trends and changes as well, if not better, than any other profession in our transforming society. At the same time, many organizations are embarked on a broad program to protect and improve the quality of the environment. As a result, the nation is finding itself moving swiftly toward a more unified, multi-purpose resource stewardship. Clearly there are spiritual forces at work and an enlarging acceptance of moral responsibilities. In the process we are becoming more aware that the earth is, in truth, the Lord's, and there is a basic motivation for (Continued on page 8) Wednesday, May 6, 1970 NUMBER 18 Miller Receives Award Dr. W. J. Miller, professor of dairy science and animal nutrition at the University of Georgia, was named Georgia's Scientist of the Year at the fourth annual Science and Technology Honors Banquet. Dr. Miller's work has been cited as a major factor in improved milk production efficiency in Georgia. Go. Homeowners Beware Fraudulent Exterminators Termites usually swarm by day. But the unlicensed, fraudulent pest control operator is known to fly-by-night. The Department of Agriculture has had several reports in the last few weeks that these swindlers are at work in Georgia now. Around the clock Animal Protein Leads In Demand For '70s A recent study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture points out areas of agricultural production in which increases must come during the next 20 years. Animal protein, it appears, will receive the most emphasis. By 1980, the demand for corn will increase some 82% over 1969's demand; and already experts are predicting the need for 300 bushels per acre to meet this requirement. The demand for wheat will also increase (This column is the third in a series on "Agriculture m the '70's" by Tom Dalton, Assistant to the Director of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture Experi- ment Stations. Next week: "Agriculture and the Government"} by 47%, soybeans by 87%, cotton by 15%, beef by 39%, pork by 13%, chicken and turkey by 50%, eggs by 18%, and the demand for milk will increase by 15%. In the TWO'S, by far the greatest agricultural effort will be devoted to supplying increased demands for animal protein, and much of the expected increase in demand for corn and soybeans will go into this effort. The people of the U.S. are traditionally big meat eaters; and because of the growth in population and appetites, this demand will increase. Beef cattle and broilers are today's hottest animal protein sources, and they will become the biggest expansion lines in the 70's. Hog and turkey expansion will also come, but not anywhere near that of beef and poultry. The animal protein demand in the 70's, however, will be for "lean meat," because of increasing consumer awareness of health problems. Consequently, methods for producing less fat animals will be in demand. The chicken, because of its low fat content, will reap the benefits of the lean meat craze. Nutritionists in the 70's will be promoting chicken as the "most perfect" animal protein. Georgia, with the nation's largest broiler industry, should benefit tremendously from this increased demand for lean meat. Another farm meat product which has caused widespread interest in recent years and in which production should soar in the 1970's is channel catfish. The estimated demand for catfish in the U.S. today is about 200 million pounds, but only about 30 million pounds are currently grown mostly in Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana. The expansion capabilities of our U.S. agriculture should be able to take care of the increased demands for meat in the 1970's, and substitute proteins will only be necessary for helping to forestall hunger in other parts of the world. If there is to be a lag in meat production in the U.S., it will probably not come until the early 1980's. If production does then fall behind consumer demand for meat, we will probably see a surge toward development of vegetable protein substitutes of supplements for animal protein. 4-H National Champ Georgia already has a national 4-H champion for 1970. W. A. (Bill) Sutton, former Extension Service director, was named national winner in the 4-H alumni recognition program. The program is designed to honor former 4-H members whose accomplishments following membership "exemplify effective community leadership, public service, service to 4-H work, and success in their chosen careers." efforts are being made by department inspectors to rid our state of these illegal operators. Homeowners should beware, particularly at this time of year, of any unknown person claiming to be a pest control operator who wants to treat for termites or other insects. The Georgia Structural Pest Control Act, which is enforced by the Entomology Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, requires all pest control companies and operators in the state to be licensed, carry proper identification and have all vehicles used by the operators lettered with the name of the company. The department inspects more than 2800 buildings each year after they have been treated for insects to assure the home and business owner that the work he has paid for has been done properly. There are almost 200 legitimate pest control companies in Georgia that are doing a fine job of protecting homes and businesses from pest damage. However a few unscrupulous, unlicensed operators can swindle homeowners of thousands of dollars in a short time and damage the reputation of the legitimate business as well. Before allowing any pest control operator to treat your home, ask to see his identification. Make sure his car or truck is lettered with the company name and license number. If you suspect a swindle or are not sure of the validity of an operator, write down the license tag number of the vehicle and check with your local law enforcement authorities or with the Entomology Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Good Soil To be successful with annuals requires good soil. Horticulturists with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service remind gardeners that in most cases a good soil just doesn't happen. It is the result of some amending or improvement of the existing soil. Contact your county agent for details. ARABIAN WEEK IN GEORGIA, May 29, 30 and 31. PageS THE MARKET BULLETIN Miscellaneous What 9i Ginseng, two species of Panax, one, native to this country, Panax quinquefolius, the other, Panax Schinseng, indigenous to eastern Asia, are the source of ginseng. The roots are much prized by the Orientals and are jsed tor medicinal purposes with no known reason except superstition. The native American species is chiefly grown and harvested in the United States and Canada for export. Ginseng-more precious than gold, was praised by Confucius because of its curative powers more than 2,000 years ago and it has remained in the Chinese materia medica ever since. Schinseng in Chinese means man-form or man-shape as the small root often divides at the bottom into two leg-shaped forks sometimes resembling a tiny man in some grotesque posture... therefore the ancient medicine men interpreted its man-shape to mean that it would be a good medicine for man. It is still valued as highly in China and they will pay a higher price for it than any other drug on the market. The Chinese druggist by some secret process cure the roots to a clear translucency and it may bring as much as $300 to $400 per ounce in the Orient. In 1962 we shipped more than 100,000 pounds to Hong Kong. Back in the 18th century Yankees involved in the China trade examined this much sought after plant in Asia and realized that a similar species grew in New England. On his next trip to the Orient he took several hundred pounds and returned home a great deal richer-then the great ginseng boom was on. In some of the early settlements in Minnesota, ginseng made the difference between success and failure. Whole communities borrowed money to start farms-some failing because of a series of natural disasters including severe winters. Just when they were about to give up traders arrived from the East and acquainted them with its value. Soon the boom peak passed-and ginseng became very hard to find. Ginseng tinctures made from the roots are still used in this country for medicinal purposes.___________ Soil Stewardship (Continued from page 1) the conservation and orderly development of natural resources. That motivation is the recognition by man of his responsibility under God to protect and use wisely His precious gifts of soil and water, and all that dwell therein. This wealth of natural resources entrusted to us by our Maker, has from our beginning as a Nation, supported our growth, and, always vital, it has now become even more important. for sale Horse compost, dry, good quality, convenient location to metro-Atlanta, $13.50 del. truckload, $5 you load and haul, 500 per bag.
