FARMERS & CONSUMERS Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner IVI3 11X61 DUNCUM VOLUME 56 Wednesday, March 25, 1970 NUMBER 12 Broadus Browne Ag Research Key To Progress "Never have so many owed so much to so few." The late Sir Winston Churchill thus saluted his countrymen for their val- iant resistance to massive assault during the Battle of Britain in World War II. Today this statement applies equally well to the producers of agri- cultural commodi- ties in the United States. .Fewer and fewer farmers op- _ erating fewer, but larger and more complex, farm en- terprises have made Americans the best fed, best clothed, and best housed people on earth. Among the many forces that have shared in bringing about this miracle of efficiency for agriculture and agri- business, agricultural research agen- cies and institutions have played a leading role. In Georgia and the Southeast, The University of Georgia College of Ag- riculture Experiment Stations, in co- operation with the U.S. Department (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. E. Bruadus Brozvne, Director of the College Ex-penment Station at Athens.) of Agriculture, have supplied much of the research results that have advanced agricultural progress. The College Station at Athens is one of the University's three major agricultural experiment stations. Others are the Georgia Station at Experiment, just outside Griffin, and the Coastal Plain Station at Tifton. Attached to the College Station are Branch Stations at Americus, Blairsville, Calhoun, Eatonton, Midville, and Plains. Experimentation and research into all areas related to agriculture and agribusiness from agricultural economics to veterinary medicine, and including forestry and home economics make up the total program of the College Station. This station, as part of the University campus in Athens, is unique in that most of its professional researchers also teach. Thus the College Station serves as a training ground for graduate students in addition to providing scientists and facilities for conducting basic and applied research. In two ways the College Station contributes to the progress so essential to the health, wellbeing, and prosperity of both producers and consumers of agricultural products. First, its scientists help increase the store of agricultural knowledge that undergirds development of new and improved plant varieties and cultural practices for growing crops as well as development of more efficient methods of producing and managing livestock and poultry. Second, its scientists, in a type of master-apprentice relationship, help develop the new scientists needed to continue this quest. Cholera Breaks In Johnson Cty. Hog cholera has been diagnosed in a herd of some 1,000 head of swine in Johnson County. A federal quarantine has been placed on the movement of all hogs in Johnson County. The quarantine prevents the movement of hogs for any purpose except hogs going to slaughter under a veterinary permit. In announcing the new outbreak of hog cholera, Commissioner Tommy Irvin said, "We are now entering the hog cholera season" and urged farmers throughout the state to watch their swine closely and contact their local veterinarian, county agent or the State Department of Agriculture in Atlanta at the first sign of swine sickness. Horsemen Meet Georgia Horseman's Assn. will sponsor a trail ride and Easter Sunrise Service at Hard Labor State Park this weekend. Trail ride will be Saturday, Mar. 28, and the Sunrise Service at 6:30 a.m. Sunday. Method For Producing Plants In Greenhouse How many times during the long winter months have you wished for some fresh, green garden vegetables, but were forced to settle for canned ones instead. Or how many times have you wished just for the heck of it to have your own orange tree for fresh fruit. And if you are a lover of beautiful flowers, how many times have you felt a pain of disappointment as you watched the last bloom on that favorite flower wither and die. Dr. Charles Rice (R), and Mr. Carl- Well, as the poets say, "wish nor cry no more," for Charles Rice, Roland Harris and Carlisle Cobb, agengineers with the University of Georgia's College of Agriculture Ex- periment Stations in Athens, have developed a "dream" green house, ideally suited for home use that can be built for about $400.00. isle Cobb (L), two of the ag-engineers who assisted in the design of the low cost green house, check some of their tomato and lettuce plants, which have thrived in the green house during the winter.________ Fire Ant Eradication Program Made of Vi inch plywood, the green house is 17 feet 5 inches long, 10 feet 6 inches wide, and 9 feet 13 inches tall in the center. It can be erected permanently in one location or it can be mounted on wheels with a hitch so that the home nurseryman can move it about to take advantage of maximum sunlight. The green house is covered by twolayers of clear polyethylene film four mills thick that are about 1 1/2 inches apart and provide built-in insulation. Both layers are put on externally over the top of the framed house. The above map shows the proposed treatment areas in Georgia's fire ant eradication program. The cross marks indicafe the areas that have received three applications and are now in the final stages of eradication. The line area indicates the portion of the state where treatments are presently underway. Applications of fire ant bait are due to be resumed in Georgia this week. The portion of the map marked area one will be treated next, area two after one, and area three next. Area four has received some treatment and will be treated again after completion of the other areas. With adequate funds from state and federal sources, the program of fire ant eradication can be completed in Georgia by 1974. Th 1970 Georgia General Assembly provided a one and a half million dollar annual appropriation for this program. U.S. Department of Agriculture is committed to match these funds on a two to one basis (two fevers! dollars for each state dollar). In the past, U.S.D.A. has only provided one doliar of federal money for each dollar of state money. Federal funds have not been provided for this year thus far; however, hopefully, U.S.D.A. and the U.S. Congress will fulfil! this commitment and the funds will be forthcoming soon. Commercially available electric temperature and humidity controls are used to maintain a controlled environment. They cost about $15 a month to operate during the coldest winter months. Extension horticulturists at the University of Georgia say you can by planting radishes now and following with petunias when the* r*a*dishes are ready. The most effective way to control summer weeds in lawns is to prevent their germination. Contact your local county Extension Service agent for details on pre-em*e*rg* ence herbicides. Prepare now for summer flowers. That's the advice of horticulturists with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. Soils worked up now will have_time to settle before planting t*im* e#. There were 5,072 organized 4-H Clubs in Georgia last year. County Extension agents .and home economists, along with adult and junior volunteer leaders, provided the leadership for the educational programs at these clubs. Do you like to do things, make things and be where the action is? Join 4-H, the head-heart-hands, health crowd. For more information, call your local county Extension agent. His number is in the telephone book. *** CARE NEEDED Conditions inside the home during the winter are anything but ideal for indoor plants, according to Troy Keeble, horticulturist with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. Warm tem- perature, low humidity and reduced light prevail in most homes. Be sure to check these plants frequently for soil moisture. *** YOUTH TIP Looking for a group that really does things? One that gives you an opportunity to be a part of an action club and still affords the chance for individual expression is available to rural and urban youth. It's the 4-H Club. Contact your county Extension agent for details*. * * SUGAR TO SYRUP Change brick-hard brown sugar into syrup instead of trying to soften it. Home economists with the Cooperative Extension Service suggest that you use a double boiler. Barely moisten the sugar with water and heat until it dissolves. Add a few drops of vanilla and maple flavoring.' *** SLICK TRICK Homemakers looking for ways to keep their children supplied with fresh napkins might try this handy trick. Home economists with the Cooperative Extension Service suggest that you use printed washcloths as a double for easy-care napkins for small children. PageS What 9i Hepatica americana, often called Mayflower and blue anemone is a perennial herb usually under 6 in. high -- the stalk of the leaves and flowers silkyhairy with liver shaped leaves, "The liver-leaf puts forth her sister blooms, Of faintest blue-" after the late snows have melted or the worst of winter is over. These fragile-looking, enamel like flowers are sometimes found actually beneath the snow and form one of the many instances which we encounter among flowers -- as like human beings where the frail and delicatelooking withstand storm and stress far better than their more robust appearing brethren. We welcome these tiny newcomers, not alone for their delicate beauty but because they are usually the first of all the flowers on the scene of action - if we rule out the never-tardy skunkcabbage. Actually the flowers vary in color from a lovely blue to pink or white. They are found chiefly in the woods but occasionally on the hi 11 sides as well. The generic name, Hepatica, is from the Greek for liver and was probably given to the plant on account of the shape of its leaf. Dr. Prior says that "in consequence of this fancied likeness it was used as a remedy for liver complaints, the common people having long labored under the belief that Nature indicated in some such fashion the uses to which her creations might be applied." It was used generally in the Middle Ages as a definite cure for liver ailments. It is advertised every spring in our BULLETIN. The Cherokee Rose is a rose of the wild, It is Georgia's forgotten child. Its foliage is green and bright; Its petals creamy white, Its center is pure spun gold. The Cherokee grow abundant in our woods; Where the Cherokee Indian chief once stood. It is Georgia's state flower we claim, As such it should have much fameBut of it we are never told. We talk of every other flower, That every garden grows Let's restore her to her rightful place, Our Indian maid with the comely face; Our beautiful Cherokee Rose. Miss Frances Delay 920 Cascade Ave., S.W. Atlanta, Georgia 30311 THE MARKET BULLETIN Easter Egg Customs; Tips For The Bunny The custom of coloring eggs goes back to a time before the earliest written records of our civilization. Writings of the ancient Parsees tell us that people colored eggs and enjoyed the custom as far back as 5,000 B.C. They regarded the egg as a symbol of the world and colored it red to represent the force of life. These ancient people celebrated the return of spring as the beginning of a new year, for it meant the start of new crops and the renewed source of their food supply. They held great spring festivals and gave the colored eggs to one another as tokens of good will. As civilization progressed and the custom became increasingly popular, other colors for the eggs were introduced. It was the Dutch settlers in Penn- Buyer Beware Of Fraudulent Pest Operators With signs of spring in the air, local home owners are warned to be aware of fraudulent pest control operators who make a habit of preying on Georgians this time of the year. Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin reminds both rural and urban residents that all legitimate pest control operators doing business in Georgia must be licensed by the state. If in doubt, or if not familiar with the person, the home owner should ask to see his pest control identification card. Most of those preying on Georgia home owners are fast talking con artists only passing through Georgia, according to Irvin. Commissioner Irvin reminds each home owner that practically every community has one or more legitimate pest control operators and he urges Georgians to do business with these local business men. If not satisfied with any one operator, home owners should get bids from two or three different ones. Aaron Transferred To Tift Position Thomas D. Aaron Jr., head of the Cooperative Extension Service marketing department since 1968, has been named assistant director of Extension and assistant director of the Rural Development Center at Tifton. His promotion and transfer were announced by L. W. Eberhardt Jr., director of the University of Georgia Extension Service. Ware Ag Agent Receives Award Robert Tom Boland, Waycross, has been awarded the second annual S. G. Chandler memorial award. Boland, Ware County Extension agent since 1959, was presented the award by J. J. Lancaster, head of the department of Extension education at the University of Georgia, during the final session of the 1970 Georgia winter school for Cooperative Extension Service workers. AMARYLLIS TIP Looking for an indoor pot plant you can start right away? Henry Clay, Extension Service horticulturist at the University of Georgia, says you might try planting an amaryllis. They are quite unique in that the stem and flowers are produced long before the leaves appear. sylvania and New York who were responsible for introducing the custom of coloring eggs at Easter in this country. Easter was a time for great merriment, and Peter Stuyvesant, the popular Dutch Governor of New Amsterdam, was a great promoter of Easter festivities. Easter, or Paas as they called it, was a day for much celebration and they colored large quantities of Paas (Easter) Eggs as tokens of better times to come. TIPS ON DYEING EGGS 1. To clean eggs wash them in cold tap water. Do not use a detergent, soap or cleanser. 2. IMPORTANT! For best results, boil not only hard-cooked eggs, but boil blown-and-rinsed eggshells before dyeing them. (Be sure to use enamel, glass or stainless steel pans, not aluminum, iron, etc.) Most eggs today have been washed with a detergent, rinsed in a sanitizing solution, and coated with an oil-base spray, all of which are invisible but protective to the eggs. These solutions, however, tend to make the dyeing of eggs with pure food colors more difficult. Boiling the eggs and the blown eggshells will often counteract the effects of these solutions. 3. ALSO IMPORTANT! For better dyed eggs it's often necessary to use more vinegar than called for in dyeing directions. This helps cut through the oil-base-spray-coating mentioned above in paragraph #2. 4. To blow an egg: Make a hole about the size of a small pea in each end of the egg with sharp-pointed skewer, old-fashioned ice pick or manicure scissors, being sure to puncture inner membrane of egg. Blow through one end of egg until contents are emptied into a bowl. Be sure not to have on lipstick! If blowing is difficult, enlarge hole. Rinse well inside and out. 5. To rinse blown eggshells fill the shell with cold tap water, shake eggshells vigorously, then blow water from shell. If necessary, repeat. (This is to make sure all the albumen is rinsed away; should any of it be left it will not only cause the shell to have a "spoiled egg odor," but will mix with the dye bath causing an uneven dye job.) 6. To cut eggshells: Draw light lines where you want to cut. Holding manicure scissors with narrow points curved toward you, cut far edge of eggshell counterclockwise.. Use tiny snips with points of scissors for best results. Also, for best results, cut eggshells as soon as possible after blowing. If shells are brittle, soak them in warm water for at least 30 minutes before cutting. 7. To dye cut eggshell: Place eggshell in dye bath in glass muffin cup and spoon color over shell turning shell at same time until desired shade is obtained. Drain well on oven, broiler or cake rack. 8. EGG FLOWER: Twist %-inch of green 6-inch pipe stem cleaner into a tight circle. Bend circle over to 90-degree angle to rest of cleaner. Insert pipe stem cleaner in hole at small end of egg and out through hole at large end of egg and glue circle into place to cover insertion hole. From 4-inch square of construction paper cut four-leaf clover design with small hole in center to form petals for flower. Push the petal design along pipe stem cleaner and close to egg. Attach pipe stem cleaner to floral pick and "plant" egg flowers in pot of philodendron or other house plant for a last minute Easter decoration or make an en- tire bouquet of egg flowers to perk up your Easter table.
