Five out of six buy and sell through a co-op. Many also use other types. Figures below give the overall picture: * Farmers do around $15.7 billion worth of business through co-ops that buy and sell for them, a figure that's been going up each year. * They market about 28 percent of their products and get about 16 percent of their farm supplies through these co-ops. * The buying and selling co-ops hire over 200,000 people, mostly in rural areas. * The 1,200 rural electric co-ops serve more than 6.3 million consumers and the telephone co-ops more than 600,000 farm families and other rural people. * The 1,200 credit co-ops loan about $8 billion a year to farmers and their co-ops. * Over 150,000 farmers use co-op irrigation companies to supply water for about 25 percent of all irrigated land in the United States. * Farmers get more than half of their fire insurance through their own co-op fire insurance companies. This Spring, Georgia held its first Inventor's Exposition, bringing together inventors, investors, patent owners, manufacturers and distributors. According to Steve W. Smith, Coordinator of the program which was sponsored by the Georgia Science and Technology Commission, the exposition was a whooping success. The main problem inventors face today, Smith explained, is after they build a "better mouse trap" they must get someone interested in manufacturing, promoting and distributing it. This is the purpose of the exposition to bring together inventors with individuals or companies that are potential customers for their invention. Almost 100 inventors displayed over 130 inventions including many relating to farming and agribusiness at the first Georgia exposition. These inventions were viewed by more than 2,000 representatives of manufacturing-industrial firms from Georgia and the Southeast. In addition, several thousand interested citizens also came to see "what's new." Smith estimated that as a result of the show, about seventy-five per cent of the inventors made contacts that may lead to the production, sale and distribution of their inventions. Statements from officials of the U. S. Department of Commerce, Patent Office, and the Office of Invention and I novation, indicated they felt Georgia's Exposition was the largest, most successful state sponsored inventor program this year. Plans are now being made for an even bigger, more successful inventor's exposition for 1969. Persons intersted in displaying their invention should write the Georgia Science and Technology Commission, 2970 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30305. EMPTY CONTAINERS On many farms pesticide containers can be found at this time of the year. Maxcy Nolan, entomologist with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, says these empty pesticide containers should be de stroyed. ------- Broilers ------~----~----~ Peanuts ------.--------- Protected Forest Lands ------- Naval Stores Pimento Peppers ------------.
