Georgia Farmers Market Bulletin Phil Campbell, Commissioner VOLUME 54 Wednesday, August 7, 1968 NUMBER 32 1968 Fire Ant Report With the anticipated third and final treatment of isolated and fringe area fire ant infestations in the Savannah, Waycross, and Macon areas this fall, the program to eradicate the imported fire ant in Georgia can move strongly into the major infested areas of the state. The speed with which the program moves and the extent to which eradication efforts are completed will depend primarily upon the amount of money available from both the state and federal governments. The Georgia General Assembly, responding to the people who live in that one-third of the state infested by the pest, has met its responsibility with significant appropriation increases for the fire ant fight. The state appropriation for this fiscal year includes $1 million now on hand with another million anticipated. This compares most favorably with the $1.5 million available during the 1967-68 fiscal year, the $600,000 available during the 1966-67 fiscal year, and the $400,000 in state funds appropriated during the 1965-66 fiscal year. Federal Appropriations It is now necessary for the federal government to assume its responsibilities and exercise the necessary degree of leadership to assist the states in this eradication effort. Congress needs to appropriate $20 million per year for the next several years if the fire ant is to be eradicated. It is not known how much federal money will be forthcoming for this fiscal year, but the federal appropriation was only $5.3 million during the 1967-68 fiscal year, $3.3 million during the 1966-67 fiscal year, and about the same during the 1965-66 fiscal year. With the completion of eradication treatments in isolated areas it will be possible to plan a long range program for the treatment of the rest of the state over the next few years. A new electronics guidance system and other improved treatment techniques will enable eradication efforts to move faster with better results than ever before. But the state and federal funds available or anticipated for use this year will serve only to launch such a long range program. Continuing appropriations of equal or larger amounts will be necessary to carry out such a program. Program Described Entomologists working on the fire ant program are of the opinion that it will take a minimum of three treatments spaced approximately 90 days apart to achieve eradication. With this in mind and with adequate funds available, they envision dividing the fire ant infested area of Georgia into broad treatment blocks extending from a northwestern to a southeastern direc- With the completion of eradication efforts in isolated and fringe areas (1), entomologists working on the fire ant program would like to launch a continuous program calling for the treatment of individual blocks as outlined on the map until the fire ant is eradicated. New treatments would be begun in block (2) and as treatments are completed in blocks (1) the program would move in a southwestern direction until all infested areas of the state are treated. tion completely across southwest and central Georgia. With adequate funds available, they envision continuous treatments with first, second, and third applications being made in different blocks all in the same year. Such a long range program properly planned and executed, will require a small army of men, aircraft, and materials but the job can be done if sufficient funds are made available on a continuing basis until the fire ant is eradicated. July Outbreaks Show Hog Cholera Increase Recent hog cholera outbreaks in southeast Georgia were thought to be under control with only nine cases reported in a seven county area during the month of June.
