Georgia Fa rmers Market Bulletin Phil Campbell Commissioner VOLUME 54 Wednesday, June 5, 1968 NUMBER 23 Tobacco Farmers Voting Agricultural Calendar On 'Georgia Ballots were mailed last week to 27,000 Georgia tobacco farmers to determine whether they favor tagging tobbaco "Georgia Grown" when it is placed for sale. The Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Tobacco is polling farmers on the proposal, which would label tobacco when it is placed for sale on the warehouse auction floor for the 1968 marketing season. The voting is being held following hearings at Moultrie, Douglas, and Metter. According to Commission Chairman Herman Odom of Claxton, all those farmers testifying, except one, spoke out strongly at the hearings in favor of labeling their tobacco. Tobacco growers are urged to mark their ballots for or against and return them during the 30 day balloting period, May 27 June 25. The vote is on Georgia Marketing Order No. 6A; which concerns advertising and sales promotion of Georgia flue-cured tobacco. Georgia Marketing Order No. 6A should not be confused with the Federal Marketing Order that was discussed at hearings and in the news earlier this year. The federal order concerns regulating the sale of the flue-cured tobacco throughout the five state producing area. Georgia flue-cured tobacco growers are the first producer group in the state to hold a referendum on labeling their commodity under authority granted in the 1968 "Georgia Agricultural Commodities Sales Promotion Act." The legislative act provides that if twothirds of the growers voting in the referendum vote in favor of labeling their tobacco, then it would be done during this year's marketing season. The label would state the tobacco was grown by a contributing member of the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Tobacco. If more than one-third of those voting are against the proposal, then the tobacco would not be labeled. If Georgia Marketing Order No. 6A passes, state tobacco warehousemen would be required by law to affix the "Georgia Grown" label to each pile of tobacco and see that it remains there until the tobacco is sold. Grown' Tag If it is evident the act is not operating to the best interest of Georgia tobacco growers, the Georgia Tobacco Commission or the Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture has the authority to suspend the labeling requirements. Also, growers themselves could suspend operation of the labeling requirement bv a ballot of 51 per cent in a referendum called by a petition of 10 per cent of the producers. How Tells Holds Quality in Eggs Egg producers and processors have found a way to get better quality eggs to Georgia housewives. They do it by oiling the eggs as soon as possible after the hens lay them. What does oil have to do with egg quality? According to C. Jerry Cox, Cooperative Extension Service poultry marketing specialist, oil does not increase egg quality. It simply helps hold the quality already in freshly laid eggs. "More and more quality egg programs are requiring oiling of eggs because of its protection advantage," Mr. Cox said. In a new Extension Service publication entitled "Oil Those Eggs," Mr. Cox offers egg producers and processors information on how to oil eggs, when to apply oil and suggestions on equipment and costs. Fresh, clean, light-weight, colorless, odorless, and tasteless mineral oil sprayed on the eggs is the recommended method of application, Mr. Cox said. Oiling not only protects quality, it also gives all eggs a uniform appearance. Interested egg producers and processors may obtain copies of the new publication at local county Extension Service offices. Leaner Pork Today's pork is much leaner due to new techniques of producing pork, according to Miss Martha Johnson, Extension Service food scientist at the University of Georgia. The pork you buy todav can be trimmed closer and therefore vou have less fat in the finished product. June 5 -- 10 AM -- 16th Annual Putnam County Dairy Festival, Eatonton.
