Georgia Market Phil Campbell, Farmers' Bulletin Commissioner VOLUME 54 Wednesday, January 10, 1968 NUMBER 2 GEORGIA COTTON ON REBOUND Agricultural By George King Executive Secretary Agricultural Commodity Commission For Cotton The Agricultural Commodity Commission for Cotton is optimistic over prospects for improvement in Georgia's cotton economy. The current situation with respect to supply and demand for cotton, higher prices, development of new varieties and recent changes in the government cotton program indicate a marked revival of interest in cotton production. Under the 1967 cotton program Georgia's cotton growers could have planted 475,000 acres in cotton even after allowing for a maximum diversion of 35%. Due to unfavorable weather, abandonment, and a provision of the cotton program which provided for price support payments on cotton even though it was plowed up and planted to other cash crops, the cotton acreaae actually left for harvest was only 285.000. This represented a loss of over 180,000 acres which with average 1967 vields end prices meant a loss of about 15 million dollars to Georgia's cotton growers and several times this much to the State's total economy. The carryover of cotton in the United States has been reduced from about 17 million bales on August 1. 1966 ^o about 12!/2 million bales on August 1, 1967. Indications are that the carryover on Auaust 1, 1968, will not exceed six to seven million bales, most of which will be low quality cotton. There is no longer a surplus. As a matter of fact cotton of good quality which is in strong demand by the mills is already in short supply. Georgia farmers can plant over 475,000 acres in cotton in 1968 with a 35 percent diversion, and up to over 650,000 acres with 5 percent diversion. Recent changes in the 1968 cotton program, larger oermitted acreoaes, higher prices for quality cotton, availability of seed of the Atlas and Coker 413 varieties and improved production technology all add up to better times for cotton farmers and for Georgia's cotton economy. Georgia cotton has hit bottom. It is due for a rebound, based on the production of quality cotton, in 1968.
