FIRE PREVENTION WEEK October 8-14,1967 FIGHT FIRES BY BREAKING THE FIRE TRIANGLE A fire needs three things: Fuel, heat, and air. Remove any side of "the fire triangle" and the fire will go out. Fuel is material which will burn and usually continues to burn once started. Heat may be supplied by other burning material, electricity, lightning, concentration of heat from the sun, or chemical or biological reactions (spontaneous combustion). There must be enough heat to raise the temperature of the fuel to its kindling temperature. Air--Enough air is needed to supply oxygen to support combustion. This is a chemical process of rapid oxidation of fuel. REMEMBER IN CASE OF FIRE: 1. Spread the alarm. 2. Be sure everyone gets out. 3. Call the fire department. Give them the exact location of the fire. If you don't know the number, dial the "operator" and ask her to call them. 4. Then, if the fire is still small, return to fight it. Make sure you leave yourself an escape path.
