BUT CARRYOVER LOOMS Cotton consumption by U. S. mills is expected to total about 9.5 million bales for 19(55-66. That's up 4 percent from a year earlier, nearly 10 percent above 1963-64, and the highest since 1950. But, cotton carryover on August 1 is expected to total a record 16.7 million bales 15 percent above the previous high (of 14.5 million) recorded in 1956. The reason: U. S. cotton exports are down sharply, while cotton imports are going along at a record pace. Cotton exports during August-March totaled only 2.2 million bales, down 18 percent from a year earlier, and are expected to total only 3.1 million bales for 1965-66. This is nearly 25 percent below 1964-65 and the lowest export total since 1958. By contrast, cotton imports during JanuaryMarch totaled 236,100 bales, up 34 percent from a year earlier and 55 percent above the first 3 months of 1964. Cotton imports for 1965 totaled 751,200 bales, 20 percent above the previous record high recorded in 1964. (Cotton Situation).
