Marke Phil Campbell, Farmers ulletin Commissioner dition inviting Spots of Beauty, _ By PHIL CAMPBELL crmerioner of Agriculture Only a short eleven years ago there no such thing as a roadside park in eorgia! And yet, today, the roadside ; program in Georgia has been so ssful that only one other state in the Ohio, can compare our beautiful pic- nitiated in 1952 when Senator Her- Talmadge was governor of Georgia. es L. Gillis was, as_he is today, d of the State Highway Board. Mr. ben F. Burch, an employee of the hway Department at the time, was alled by the fact that Georgians and ors to our state had to pull off the r to eat a picnic lunch or rest a mo- t. He took this idea to Mr. Gillis and ized asa function of the Maintenance ae e Division of the State Highway the 235 parks that dot Georgias ays offering an inviting place for gians and tourists to stop, rest and uic. Some of the parks, ranging in from one to three acres, even pro- playground areas for the children. etting the parks started in Georgia as not easy, Mr. Burch recalls. There d for the parks and state equipment ould not be used to maintain private roperty. That left one alternative, the nd must be donated. In a few short months, Mr. Burch had ide 67 speeches to civic clubs, garden lubs and other organizations and had M1 tten countless letters. Highways . gians responded to the request and road- side parks began springing up throughout the state. To this day, not one penny of state funds has been utilized to purchase land for roadside parks. All of the pro- perty was either donated to the state or secured on a long term lease. The equipment used in the parks, such as the picnic tables, are built and provided by the State Highway Depart- _ ment as is the maintenance of the parks. no state funds available to purchase Agricultural CALENDAR Nev. 5 "Wildlife Management" Short Course, ABAC, Tifton. These lovely roadside parks provide a rest stop for the traveling public not available in many states. No trading or soliciting or all night camping is allowed. The parks are checked periodically by the State Patrol. Each park is equipped with tables and benches for eating, grills for cooking, gar- bage cans and drive ways and direction- al signs. Many garden and civic clubs through- out the state have adopted a roadside park as a project and have turned them into veritable flower gardens, them even more inviting and comforta- ble. Although there is no way to check the actual number using the parks each year, it is not surprising to find 10 or 15 cars at a park at one time. And too, the hun- dreds of letters received from every state in the nation and some foreign coun- tries is a source of pride to the state. All Georgians and visitors are invited to use the roadside parks. And while you are there, be sure to do your part to take eare of these shady rest spots and keep them beautiful. Lets all help the High- way Department keep Georgias reputa- tion for having as beautiful and plentiful state roadside parks as any state in the United States. = Georgia rs ay: off ae Many Geor- | STATE EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI F THE SOUTH Georgia First @ BROILERS @ PEANUTS @ PROTECTED FOREST LANDS @ IMPROVED PECANS : @ NAYAL STORES making - @ PIMENTO PEPPER GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN Georgia Department of Agricvidture Agriculiure Building Capitol Square Ailania 3, Georgia Phone JAckson 4-3292 D.
