Georgia Farmers' Marke Bulletin Phil Campbell, Commissioner VOLUME 49 ATLANTA. GEORGIA. WEDNESDAY, JULY 15. 1964 NEXT WEEK, JULY 19-25, IS NUMBER 46 FAR SAFETY WEEK Practice These Safety Tips Always PESTICIDES 1. ALWAYS read the label before using pesticides. Note warnings and cautions before opening the container. 2. Keep pesticides out of the reach of children and pets. Store outside of the home, away from food and feed, and under lock and key. 3. ALWAYS store sprays and dusts in original containers and keep them tightly closed. 4. NEVER smoke while using or mixing pesticides. 5. Avoid inhaling pesticide sprays or dusts. When directed on the label, wear protective clothing and masks. 6. Do not spill sprays or dusts on the skin or clothing. If they are spilled, remove contaminated clothing IMMEDIATELY and wash the skin thoroughly. 7. Wash hands and face and change to clean clothing after spraying or dusting. Also wash clothing before wearing it again. 8. Cover food and water containers when applying pesticides around livestock or pet areas. Do not contaminate streams, lakes, or ponds. 9. Use separate equipment for applying hormone-type herbicides to avoid accidental injury to susceptible plants. 10. ALWAYS dispose of empty pesticide containers so that they pose no hazard to humans, animals or plants. 11. Observe label directions and cautions to keep residues on edible portions of plants within the limits permitted by law. 12. If symptoms of illness occur during or shortly after using pesticides call a physician or get the patient to a hospital immediately. Accidental deaths from certain pesticides in U.S.. Kind 1946-1960 Arsenic and Arsenic Compounds ..................... 6 Cyanide and Cyanide Compounds ..................... 41 Chlorinated Hydrocarbon Compounds (DDT accounted for 35 of these deaths.) ........................... 85 Fluoride and Fluoride Compounds (Sodium Fluoride accounted for 16.) ................. 26 Nicotine and Nicotine Compounds (Nicotine accounted for 26.) ...................... 50 Organic Phosphate Compounds (Parathion accounted for 73.) .................... 105 Phosphorous and Phosphorous Compounds (Phosphorous in rat poisons accounted for 201.) ....... 211 TRACTORS Tipping To insure control while driving your tractor, keep brakes, steering mechanism, clutch, and hydraulics in proper adjustment. Reduce tractor tipping hazards by spreading tractor wheels as far as practicable. Put all controls in neutral and depress clutch before starting the engine. Set drawbar in lowest position when hitching to a heavy load. Pull only from the drawbar; never hitch higher than the drawbar. Reduce speed before making a turn or applying brakes. Avoid sudden starts, excessive speeds, or sudden stops when operating on hillsides, rough ground, or most off-the-road operations. When moving on the highway, or from field to field, lock brake pedals together for simultaneous operation when making a stop. Falls Clean dirt, trash and grease from the operator's platform, pedals, steps, steering wheel, and other places where it may cause an accident. Only the driver should ride on the tractor, and he should sit on the seat or stand on the platform. Do not dismount while tractor is in motion. Power Take-Off Avoid loose fitting clothing; a hanging sleeve or open coat is more apt to catch in moving parts. Safety shielding is for your protection. Keep it in place when using the power take-off. Disengage PTO before dismounting, adjusting, or unclogging power-driven machinery. Runover Keep children away from tractor and equipment. Do not leave the engine running unattended. Lock the brakes so tractor will not roll. Highway Collision One-third of all fatal tractor accidents occur on public roads. Avoid heavily traveled roads when moving farm equipment, whenever possible. Use red warning flags in daytime and lights and red reflective tape at night to alert fast-moving traffic when you move equipment on public roads. Other Do not refuel hot or running engines, and do not smoke when refueling. Refuel LP gas engines according to instructions. Oil, grease and service engine before starting, not while engine is running. To remove pressure radiator cap when engine is hot, first turn cap to safety stop and let all pressure and steam escape before removing. A few dollars for a fire extinguisher and first aid kit may save a life and thousands of dollars in equipment. Carry these safety tools on your tractor. Operate your tractor inside a building only when doors are open. Do not remove belt while pulley is in motion. Lower all equipment before leaving the tractor. Shut off engine and remove ignition key.
