Georgia Farmers' Marke Bulletin Phil Campbell, Commissioner VOLUME 49 ATLANTA, GEORGIA. WEDNESDAY. MAY 27, 1964 NUMBER 39 HOG CHOLERA SEASON S HERE--VACCBNATE! Surest Cholera Deterrent Is Proper Vaccination Hog farmers take note. Stop for one minute if you will and imagine what a cholera free state would mean to you and your profits! There is no doubt that since you first started raising hogs, your chief worry each year has been protecting your herd from cholera or the threat of a cholera outbreak that would destroy your herd and your investment. This threat is especially great at this time of year Hog Cholera season! The Federal-State Hog Cholera Eradication Program is designed with one big goal in mind ... to eliminate this costly disease from our state and eventually from the nation once and for all. Its hard, no doubt, for you to imagine a cholera free state and never having to worry about cholera protection or losing your herd because of cholera. BUT THIS DREAM IS POSSIBLE! IT CAN COME TRUE IF THE HOG FARMERS OF GEORGIA WILL CONTINUE TO COOPERATE IN THE EFFORT TO ERADICATE HOG CHOLERA AND WILL (1) PROTECT HERDS FROM CHOLERA BY PROPER VACCINATION (2) REPORT ANY SUSPICION OF CHOLERA IMMEDIATELY. Recent tests conducted using a killed vaccine for protecting hogs from cholera have proved over 90 percent effective when properly used over a period of two years. This killed vaccine (commercial crystal violet or similar product) is much cheaper, about one half the cost of modified live virus vaccine and anti hog cholera serum. However, the killed vaccine takes about 14 days to produce effective im- munity in your herd. Therefore, if you suspect any exposure to cholera or there has been any recent disclosure of cholera in your vicinity, modified live virus vac- cine and anti-hog cholera serum should be used in order to get immediate protection. If there has been exposure and you use the killed vaccine, you will run a great risk of not having your herd properly protected. Remember, even though the State Cholera Eradication Program is protecting farmers from loss due to cholera with its indemnity program, the only way we can look forward to a cholera free state and being free from the expense and worry of cholera once and for all is for you and all hog farmers in Georgia to (1) properly vaccinate your hogs and (2) report any suspicion of cholera immediately to your veterinarian, county agent or the Georgia Department of Agriculture. May 27. 1964 Fertilizer Distribution Is Inadequate Nitrogen Very Important To Yields A recent research study at the South- ern Piedmont Soil Conservation Field Station at Watkinsville, Ga., shows that uniform distribution of fertilizer can be mighty important to getting optimum yields from farm crops. An analysis by research scientists L. F. Welch, A. R. Bertrand and W. E. Ad- ams of results from rates-of-fertilizer re- search at this station show that nonuni- form distribution of fertilizer elements, applied separately or in combination, can cause sizeable reductions in yields of corn and Coastal Bermudagrass. In one test nonuniform distribution of nitrogen on corn cut yields as much as 48 bushels in a 10-acre field, or about five bushels per acre. In this example 900 pounds of nitrogen was evenly distributed over one 10-acre field, Field A. In another 10-acre corn field, Field B, 900 pounds of nitrogen was distributed at rates of 120 pounds per acre on six acres, at 90 pounds per acre on one acre, and at 30 pounds per acre on three acres. Field A produced a total of 930 bushels of corn while Field B produced only 882 bushels 48 bushels less for the same amount of fertilizer. Similar results were obtained in a test with Coastal Bermudagrass. Uniform distribution of 3,000 pounds of nitrogen on 10 acres of grass produced 73 tons of forage. But when the 3,000 pounds of nitrogen was applied at the uneven peracre rates of 400 pounds on six acres, 300 pounds on one acre and 100 pounds on three acres, a 10-acre field produced only 67 tons of forage. The scientists said that nonuniform distribution of phosphorus and of potassium on Coastal Bermudagrass also reduced yields, but not as much as nonuniform distribution of nitrogen because yield increases from these elements were not as great as that from nitrogen. Nonuniform distribution of a mixed fertilizer (20-10-10) containing the three nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium also caused a reduction in yields of Coastal Bermudagrass, depending on the degree on nonuniformity. The scientists concluded that, generally, the effect oi nonuniform distribution of fertilizer on crop yields, as compared to uniform distribution, depends on the degree of nonuniformity, the magnitude of the yield increase obtained from the applied fertilizer, and the type of yield response curve. Ga. Farm Income Up $59 Million In 1963 Total farm income in Georgia in 1963 was $889,903,000, almost $59 million more than in 1962, a Cooperative Extension Service market information and outlook specialist reports. Livestock income of $454,987,000, combined with record yields of the state's major crops, pushed total farm income to the record high, said Paul C. Bunce of the University of Georgia. Bunce added that livestock accounted for 57 percent of Georgia's total farm income last year. "This is livestock's greatest share since 1958 when it was 57.5 percent of the total and exceeded crop income for the first time," he stated. Realized net income per farm also showed an increase last year. It was $3,257, up 13 percent over 1962. Georgia Crop Reporting Service figures show there were large increases in receipts from peanuts, eggs, pecans, and corn. Hog, tobacco, and broiler receipts declined slightly. Again in 1963 the Georgia farmer was faced with increased expenses for all major production items. Sharpest increases, Mr. Bunce said, were for purchased feed and hired labor. Indications are that Georgia will have a good crop of apples this year, reports C. D. Spivey, horticulturist with the Cooperative Extension Service. Lowers Cotton Yields Inadequate use of nitrogen is keeping Georgia farmers from breaking the yield barrier in cotton production, a Cooperative Extension Service agronomist believes. P. J. Bergeaux of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture cited research information that shows farmers can profitably apply up to 150 pounds of total nitrogen per acre on cotton provided all other recommended cultural practices are followed. Farmers generally apply enough mixed fertilizer at planting time, Mr. Bergeaux said. He added, however, that many of them failed to apply sufficient amounts of additional nitrogen for high per acre yields. The Extension agronomist told of a three-year experiment at the College of Agriculture to determine the effect of varying nitrogen rates on cotton. Dr. H. F. Perkins, agronomist who conducted the tests, used 30, 60, 90, 150 and 210 pounds of nitrogen per acre. Adequate amounts of phosphorus, potassium, and lime were applied to be sure these elements were not limiting factors. An average per acre yield of 2,033 pounds of seed cotton was obtained at the 150-pound nitrogen rate. This compared to 1,709 pounds of seed cotton for the 60-pound nitrogen level, and 1,887 pounds for the 90-pound rate. Mr. Bergeaux said a fear of excessive vegetative growth has kept some Georgia farmers from using high rates of nitrogen on cotton. In the experiment conducted by Dr. Perkins, however, average height of the cotton at 150 pounds of nitrogen was only 45 inches. This compared to an average height of 43 inches where 90 pounds of nitrogen was used. According to Mr. Bergeaux, proper insect control is the secret to controlling vegetative growth when relatively high rates of nitrogen are used. "If cotton insects are controlled," he explained, "the additional nitrogen will be utilized by the plant in boll formation and development rather than in excess vegetation." This was the experience of Dr. Perkins, who adequately controlled cotton insects and followed other good cultural practices in his tests at Athens.
