Georgia Farmers' Marke Bulletin Phil Campbell, Commissioner VOLUME 49 ATLANTA, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15, 1964 NUMBER 33 Good Cultural Practices Important Agricultural To Top Quality Tobacco Production Agronomist Gives Tips To Assist Leaf Growers By J. P. PRESTON Extension Tobacco Agronomist Once a stand of tobacco has been secured, cultural practices can have a profound influence upon the quality, or more properly, the usability of the tobacco produced. The practices referred to here include fertilization, irrigation, and cultivation. The fertilization of tobacco is an exacting procedure. Proper amounts and proportions of essential elements are necessary for producing good yields of highquality tobacco. However, in the production of flue-cured tobacco, high yields are more or less incompatible with best quality. Therefore within limits, the supply of plant nutrients must be made to operate as a limiting factor of growth if best results are to be obtained. Much of the flue-cured tobacco is grown on soils that have a high rate of water infiltration and a low capacity for retaining nutrients against leaching. Consequently, rainfall may have a profound influence on the quantity of nutrients that should be applied. High rates of fertilizer may increase yield but delay maturity and often produce poor quality tobacco, especially if moisture is deficient. This causes difficulty in harvesting and curing, and lower prices. Experimental "evidence and field trials on the principal soils on which tobacco is grown indicate that rates of fertilizer in excess of 1,600 pounds of 4-8-12 or equivalent per acre can reduce yield, price per pound, and acre value. According to soil test data, about three-fourths of the soils on which tobacco is commonly grown in Georgia are medium to high in phosphate and low in potash, and should receive a fertilizer with a 1-2-3 ratio, such as 4-8-12. Needs for most of the remainder of the soils can be satisfactorily taken care of with a 1-3-3 ratio, such as 3-9-9. Therefore, the only fertilizer analyses suggested for tobacco are 3-9-9 and 4-8-12, and a 6-3-24 for side-dressing. At least one-fourth of the nitrogen in 3-9-9 and 4-8-12 should be in the nitrate form in order to stimulate early growth, especially where soil fumigation is practiced. This eliminates the necessity of early side-dressing with nitrate nitrogen, a practice that has been common in the past. The 4-8-12 grade makes it unnecessary and even undesirable to side-dress with potash or grades containing high amounts of potash, such as 3-9-18. Most growers are now using a split application of fertilizer. Amounts in excess of 800 pounds of 4-8-12 and 1,000 pounds of 3-9-9 should be applied as a CALENDAR May 7-8 Joint Meeting Georgia Chapter Southeastern Section, Society of American Foresters, Center for Continuing Education, University of Georgia, Athens. If a total of 1,500 pounds of 4-8-12 is to be used per acre, 800 pounds can be applied before planting, and the additional 700 pounds applied as a side-dressing at the first or second cultivation. Another practice is to apply 300 to 400 pounds at the first or second cultivation and let weather conditions and the condition of the crop determine whether the additional 300 or 400 pounds is used at the next cultivation. Later side-dressing, especially with high rates of fertilizer, is always dangerous unless irrigation is available. Secondary Elements A properly formulated tobacco fertilizer contains at least 1.2 percent magnesium, one-half of which should be wa- (Continued On Page 2) State And Area Trade School Schedules Listed Georgia's two state technical and vocational schools and the state's area vocational-technical schools are offering job training to thousands of boys, girls, men, and women. These schools are meeting the need for occupational training of many young people who are graduating from high school each year with little or no saleable skill. They are also meeting the need of adults for re-training for new jobs as changes in industrial and agricultural methods displace many workers. In addition to the two state schools at Clarkesville and Americus, fifteen of the new area vocational-technical schools will be in full operation this fall. Registration in all such schools for the fall trimester will be held on August 31. New classes will begin on September 1, 1964. Individuals wishing furfher information, or wishing to enroll in one of the schools, should either visit or write directly to the school in which they are interested as early as possible in order to assure admission before the classes are filled. Schools, name of the director, address, and course offerings are as follows: AREA VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL SCHOOLS Area vocational-technical schools are operated tuition free to qualified Georgia citizens. Applying calcium (lime) to soils used for tobacco is questionable, except when a reliable soil test shows the soil to be extremely deficient in calcium. Then, use only dolomitic limestone, which also contains magnesium. The optimum soil reaction for tobacco is within the range of pH 5.3 to 5.8. The lower figure is more satisfactory where black shank is a problem. Do not use soils with pH above 6.0 for tobacco. Cultivation Three or four cultivations can be made to good advantage. The second cultivation should be fairly deep to loosen and aerate the soil and to make it mellow. Later cultivations should be shallow and farther from the plants. Cultivation should be discontinued well before time of harvesting, as the tobacco will ripen better if not cultivated too late. In cultivation, the field should not be left in a condition that will allow water to stand around the tobacco plants in case of heavy rains. Cultivating to keep the tobacco always on a fairly high ridge usually gives better results than does level cultivation. This is particularly true on low, wet land. Throw fresh soil around the plants at each cultivation. This will cause new roots to form higher on the stalk, which may be beneficial during rainy seasons. The quality of flue-cured tobacco depends to a large extent on the distribution and the amount of water during the growing season. Although tobacco is rath- er drought resistant, its water require- ments for rapid growth and large size are high. Severe drought will result in pro- nounced stunting of the plants; however, moderate drought may not materially re- duce tobacco yields, since the reduction in size of the leaves is largely compen- sated by increases in weight. Wet seasons sometimes reduce the yield by producing thin, light-weight leaves. The water con- tent of the plant tissue required to main- tain full turgidity is quite high, usually of 88 to 90 percent of the total green weight of the leaf. A loss of six to eight percent of this moisture will produce the first visible symptoms of wilting. Irrigation During the April-to-August growing season, tobacco on upland soil requires 12 to 15 inches of water. Even less may be required on some of the low, wet land now used extensively for tobacco. Normally, during this period, we get this amount or more of rainfall. Therefore, irrigation is needed primarily to supplement the natural rainfall during dry periods. During the first few weeks after transplanting, tobacco is benefited by a fairly dry soil. Therefore, little or no water is suggested during this period, especially if night temperatures are too low (below GOT.) to promote good growth. Heavy applications of water at this stage will prevent the establishment of a good root system, will leach fertilizer, turn the plants yellow, cause stunting, and reduce yield. If it is necessary to irrigate to prevent scald and wilting, no more than 1/2 inch at a time is suggested. During this period, tobacco usually will make good growth with 1/2 inch of water per week. As the season progresses and the day and night temperatures remain high enough for optimum growth, the water requirement of tobacco naturally increases. It is during the mid-season period that irrigation is most necessary and most profitable. Under average conditions, tobacco, during this stage of growth, requires about one inch of water per week. The purpose of irrigation should be to supply the difference of this amount not supplied by rainfall, or to supply the total amount if rain does not occur. There is a general tendency for growers who irrigate to use higher rates of fertilizer. While with irrigation this practice is not as dangerous as when supplemental water is not available, it is doubtful that additional fertilizer is necessary. The rates of fertilizer now used by most tobacco growers are ample to produce good yields of tobacco with irrigation, if the water is properly applied and other good practices are followed. Irrigation may mean that growers will get full use of the fertilizer applied rather than calling for an increase in the amounts. The only time that additional fertil- izer may be necessary is when heavy rains follow irrigation early in the season. If this causes the plants to turn yellow from lack of nitrogen, supply additional fertilizer as a side-dressing, using the complete tobacco formula 4-8-12. At the Coastal Plain Experiment Sta- tion, net returns per acre from irrigating tobacco have varied from $14 per acre in 1949 to more than $800 per acre in 1954. Growers report similar results. Therefore, wide seasonal variations in returns can be expected.
