Georgia arkef Phil Campbell, Farmers et Commissioner ATLANTA, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1963 Eighth In A Series GIA PA KS going to be charted on the leisure time her than on the working time of its citizens. During the past half century the United es has experienced blessings that could be undoing. Her population has expanded, people are living longer and heaithier lives her industry and farming have become so cient and mechanized that she requires few- people for the production of the necessity is for living. This has led the nation from a 70 hour ing week to what is known as the 40 hour week with most offices in big cities ng less than 40 hours. The future certainly The future economy of the United States indicates that it won't be long before we will have what is commonly known as a 30 hour work week. Continuing on this trend, we can easily see how the off hours or leisure time of the people of this nation is- going to affect the economy of our nation. Georgia must, therefore, develop her natural resources if she intends to survive in the struggle that is developing fo attract man during his surplus time when he spends his surplus money. The continued development of Georgia's agriculture and of Georgia's industry will not sufficiently give to Georgia her share of the national economy. Tourism must also be de- veloped for Georgia's tourists and for those out of state whom we would like to visit Georgia because of their spare time and | their spare dollars. There are many places in Georgia that could compete favorably with other places in the nation if they were properly developed for tourists. The following article is the eighth in a series about Georgia's natural resources that are being or should be developed into recre- ational areas and tourist attractions. NUMBER 3 Phil Campbell is Fall, Head North But Stay i in Georgia! The first two areas ave parks that may be reached 1 the central point within an hour or easy driving. Those on the far north der are roughly 100 to 130 miles from lanta. The facilities at Fort Yargo State Winder are in the process of being ex- panded with a huge dam under construc- tion to form a lake for swimming, fish- ing and boating. This and the new build- ings will probably be ready for use by next year, but it is open now for picnick- ing and tent camping .... and be sure to see the interesting old Revolutionary Fort there. Victoria Bryant State Park at Royston has camping sites and picnic areas. Nancy Hart, smallest of the State Parks, at Elberton; is used only for | day picnicking. Bobby Brown Memorial State Park, 16 miles from Elberton on the Clark Hill Reservoir, offers pic- nicking, boating and excellent fish- ing. The Alexander H. Stephens Me- morial State Park at Crawfordville is particularly interesting for its fine Con- federate museum and Stephens restored. home, Liberty Hall. There are pleasant pienic spots scattered throughout the beautifully landscaped grounds. For truly exciting autumn beauty, by all means plan to visit some or all of the six State Parks ranged along the north- ern border in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Cloudland Canyon State Park, in the far probably offers the most magnificent view, and is known as Georgias Little Grand Canyon ==. 7a marvelous setting for a days outing and picture taking. Fort Mountain State Park at Chatsworth has the ruins of an ancient fort to explore, fishing, and hiking over mountain trails, and five mobile home cottages being installed. Amicaiola Falls State Park, named for the beautiful 729- foot cascaded falls coming from the mountain lake above, is a favorite spot for sightseers and vacationers. Vogel State Park at Blairsville perhaps offers more in the way of something to view or do than most others. Historically inter- esting as both Indian and American bat- tlegrounds, it offers cottages, camping and recreational facilities as well as the comfortable Walasi-yi Inn for meals and accommodations, weather permitting.
