Georgia Farmers' Marke Bulletin Phil Campbell, Commissioner VOLUME 49 ATLANTA, GEORGIA. WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 12, 1964 NUMBER 24 State Farm Markets Show Large Increase In Sales For Year 1963 Sales for Georgia's network of 20 Farmers' Markets reached $94,593,328.79 in 1963 $1 1/2 million more than the 1962 sales of $93,093,220.00. - Nashville and Cordele markets showed the largest percentage gains. Watermelon price structure and an increase in shelled corn sales made Cordele's gross rise to $3,962,317 nearly $2 million more that last year. In Nashville where trading was heavy in pecans and in tomato plants for the first time there was a total gross of $1,671,500 more than a $1 million over the 1962 sales of $391,920. The state-operated markets are a primary outlet for Georgia grown products. Farmers, truckers and jobbers from within and out of Georgia keep fresh fruits and vegetables moving through these markets at wholesale prices. The Atlanta Market had the largest sales $47,289,000 almost half of the state total. Other sales figures were: Athens, $1,332,500; Augusta, $7,570,500; Blue Ridge, $104,700; Cairo, $2,886,000; Columbus, $5,530,000; Dillard, $297,000; Donaldsonville, $2,718,000; Glennville, $447,600; Jesup, $330,000; Macon, $5,888,600; Moultrie, $1,186,000; Pelham, $250,500; Rome, $283,200; Savannah, $4,943,000; Thomasville, $4,706,000; Tifton, $2,158,000; and .Valdosta, $1,040,000. In addition to the markets, the Department of Agriculture has six sweet potato curing houses that handled storage of 139,000 bushels of potatoes. Located at Americus, Cairo, Riddleville, Ocilla, Pitts and Statesboro, these sweet potato storage centers showed gross sales of $208, 176,500 double the 1962 sales. Many Farmers Still Gamble With Seed Of Poor Quality Drill Box Survey Shows Farmers Plant Home Grown Seed Without Free Lab Test A recent survey among Georgia farmers revealed that many Georgia farmers, per- haps 50 percent or more, are planting "home-grown" seed and in many instances they are planting poor quality seed. Certainly there is nothing wrong with planting "home- grown" seed but when farmers plant such seed without taking time to test the seed for quality they are simply asking for trou- ble. Agricultural The survey which disclosed information on Georgia seed planting habits was CALENDAR known as the "Drill Box Survey." In carrying out the survey, seed samples were taken from farmers in 54 counties during Feb. 13-14 -- Go. Johnstone, Jr., division chairman. William J. Wilson, fruit and nut grower of Fort Valley, was elected chairman of the new advisory committee at a meeting held recently. Discussion during this first meeting brought out the continuing growth of the various horticultural enterprises in Georgia which together comprise the state's horticulture industry currently valued at $100 million. The growing importance of horticulture in urban areas, with the rapid increase in the number of amateur gardeners among suburban homeowners, and the establishment of new firms engaged in professional horticultural services such as maintaining industrial plant grounds, was especially noted. Advisory committee members also pointed out that recent improvements in the production and culture of vegetable crops and the development of mechanical harvesting methods have increased the output of vegetable processing plants in (Continued On Page 8) Poultry And Livestock Outlook Is Discussed While cotton, corn, peanuts, tobacco and pecans were producing record yields and contributing to an $85 million increase in the value of Georgia crops in 1963, it looks like income from poultry and livestock was about the same as in 1962. One dramatic increase in the poultrylivestock area, however, was in income from eggs. Paul C. Regular seed sample bags are available from the laboratory or from most county agent offices. In sending in samples the bags of seed should be packaged in some kind of container like a small cardboard box, properly wrapped, tied, addressed and mailed. This protects the seed from being crushed in the mails. In each case, the person sending in the seed should put a piece of paper inside the bag with the seed showing his full name and address as well as the kind, variety and, if possible, the lot number of the seed. The name and address of the sender should also be on the outside of the package. If the sample is made up of large seed like cotton or corn, about one and one half pounds should be sent in. If smaller seed, one half pound will be enough. In making up the sample, seed should be taken from several different areas of the lot or several different places in the bag to make sure the sample is representative of all the seed being sampled. Upon receipt of the seed in the Seed Laboratory an acknowledgement receipt will be mailed to the sender and after the test is completed, from 10 to 30 days depending upon the kind of seed, a report on results of the test will also be mailed. If you are thinking of planting "homegrown" seed from your farm or from a neighbor's farm this spring then take steps right now to make sure the seed is of good quality. Get up a good representative sample and send it to the State Seed Laboratory. You might save yourself a lot of trouble and unnecessary expense. U. S. Meat Eaters In 1962, each person in the United States consumed an average of 164 pounds of red meat. The average person also ate 37 pounds of chicken and turkey. 324 eggs, 136 pounds of fruits, 191 pounds of vegetables, and 637 pounds of milk and dairy products. MARKET BULLETIN Georgia Horficultural (Continued From Page 1) the state and have tended to stabilize the industry and have increased its potential for expansion. The group commended Senator Richard B. Russell for his support of horticulture at the federal level, particularly in regard to the recent appropriation for a new regional fruit and nut laboratory to be located at Byron. It also expressed appreciation to Senator Russell for previous appropriations for vegetable research at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station and for apple breeding research at the Mountain Experiment Station at Blairsville. At the same time the committee stressed the urgent need for more adequate support on the state level, particularly for the horticultural teaching program at the University in Athens, and for state supported research projects at all experiment stations. Another important action taken by the committee was the appointment of a sub-committee to prepare plans for the formation of a professional Georgia Horticulture Society. Fred Galle, director of horticultural work at Ida Cason Callaway Gardens, was named secretary of this subcommittee. Dr. Johnstone said a considerable part of the initial session of the advisory committee was devoted to briefings of members of the Horticulture Division's executive committee. Heads of the several departments within the division outlined work now in progress and reported on recent accomplishments in research, teaching and Extension. Recent accomplishments noted included the breeding of improved varieties of .leading horticultural crops such as sweet potatoes and pimientoes, development of machines and varieties which have made practical the mechanical harvesting of Southern peas, and the development of fertilization practices which have boosted production of pecans. Wednesday, February 12, 1964 Poultry And Livestock (Continued From Page 1) mates place income from Georgia eggs at $108.5 million in 1963. If this estimate holds up, it will mean an increase of about $14.5 million in egg sales over 1962. Bunce said the increase from eggs probably will more than offset estimated declines for broilers, hogs and cattle. Broilers slaughtered under inspection increased, but price declines probably kept total income near 1962 levels. The outlook for 1964 is for increased broiler supplies through February, and more layers in broiler supply flocks assure enough eggs to make increases possible into the fall of the new year. Bunce said broiler supplies in excess of increased demand probably will cause pressure on prices to continue throughout most of 1964. As for hogs, their estimated numbers went down in 1963, and so did prices. Bunce explained that this was due to the fact that national numbers were up, causing reduced prices throughout the country, including Georgia. Indications are that there will be fewer hogs slaughtered in 1964 than in '63. Bunce believes low prices in the winter months will be followed by a rising trend beginning by March, when supplies of hogs going to market decline. He said hog prices should continue upward to a summer high at about the 1963 level. They could be a little higher, he continued, but competition from cattle and broilers, both of which are expected to be in larger supply, may keep hog prices from going above last year's figure. Cattle numbers reached about 107 million head on farms as of Jan. 1. This is up three percent from a year ago. Cattle kept for milk have declined again by about three percent, so beef cattle numbers are up by about five percent. Bunce said this beginning inventory will provide a base for a further increase in beef production in 1964, and a larger calf crop for expansion of cattle on feed. Beef consumption this year is expected to exceed the estimated 95 pounds per capita in 1963, but prices probably will average slightly lower because the increased demand will be offset by larger supplies.
