Georgia Farmers' Marke Bulletin Phil Campbell, Commissioner VOLUME 49 ATLANTA, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 1964 NUMBER 23 Income Tax Advantages Cited In Timber Sales Farmers Bothered With Fire Ants For Woodland Owners Most Georgia farmers and woodland owners make timber sales so infrequently that they often overlook income tax advantages. That opinion was expressed this week by George D. Walker, Cooperative Extension Service forester at the University of Georgia. Walker urged tree growers to investigate every avenue of tax saving. "The first point to remember," he said, "is that the capital gains treatment may be applied to most timber sales. This alone will cut taxes to at least half what they will be if the sale is treated as ordinary income." The Extension forester continued that the cost of making the sale, as well as certain other costs, may be considered expense. Mr. Walker said this "certainly will help financially." In many cases, he said, there are costs and expenses that have been capitalized. He called these costs "depletion allowances," and added: "As each sale is made, a certain portion of this depletion allowance may be deducted from the income." Walker said good records on the woodland enterprise is the secret to tax savings. He admitted that all the necessary calculations may not be as simple as the farmer would like. He suggested that the services of both a tax consultant and a forester might be in order, and added: "Usually, money spent in this manner is a wise investment." The Extension worker pointed out that local tax officials or county agents can furnish details regarding taxes from woodland sales. Publication On Curing Hams Is Now Available "Curing Georgia Hams Country Style" is the title of a new publication just released by the University of Georgia's Cooperative Extension Service. Copies are available at county and home demonstration agents' offices. The publication gives complete instructions for the home curer or the commercial operator. It lists 19 steps to follow to get the "old fashion flavor" everyone looks for in a cured ham. . The author is James A. Christian, Extension meats utilization specialist who says cured pork valued at many thousands of dollars is lost in Georgia each year because of improper curing and storage. Can Control Pest Easily With Bait Mirex Available To All At Special Low Prices Farmers in fire ant infested areas may purchase the revolutionary new fire ant bait Mirex at a special low price if they desire to control fire ant infestations on their property until the State-Federal eradication program reaches their area. Landowners can effectively control the ants by either sprinkling about a spoonful of Mirex directly on individual mounds or by broadcasting Mirex over infested land at the rate of five to six pounds per acre. Cost of the Mirex ordered from the manufacturer in Mississippi is 12 cents per pound for orders of less than 20,000 pounds and 10 cents per pound for orders of more than 20,000 pounds. Freight rates are not included in these prices. The requirements for the purchase of Mirex at these special low prices are threefold and simple: 1. A county fire ant eradication com- Agricultural CALENDAR Feb. 7 -- "Watermelon and Cantaloupe" Short Course. ABAC, Tifton. Upon receipt of the committee names the Department certifies to the Mirex manufacturer, Allied Chemical Company, that the county has formed a fire ant committee in an effort to control fire ant populations until the State-Federal eradication program reaches that area. 3. The Department provides the county committee or county agent with the name of the salesman who will handle the orders and the salesman begins accepting Mirex orders from farmers in the county. Farmers may order the Mirex individually or collectively but generally farmers in individual counties work through their county agent or Farm Bureau chapter to pool their orders. Arrangements for payment of the orders are worked out with the manufacturer by the County Fire Ant Committee. Mirex is completely safe. It may be used in pastures, hog lots, around the home and around streams and ponds without danger when used properly. Because it is a bait upon which the ants feed it should not be contaminated with other products such as fertilizer. Farmers who want to be free of major fire ant worries this coming year should contact their neighbors now and complete necessary arrangements for purchasing Mirex. The weather will begin warming up and fire ants will become active in many areas of South Georgia in March and farmers should go ahead and secure the Mirex they need so they can knock out infestations at the beginning of the new crop year. After the first major treatment the average farmer can effectively control the ant by keeping a little Mirex on hand regularly. Many farmers carry a quart jar of Mirex in their truck or on their tractor. They punch holes in the top of the jar and use it much like a salt shaker to treat mounds whenever they find them on the farm. The State-Federal eradication program will be resumed in the spring but at the present there are only enough funds available to continue the slow push from the Atlanta area Southward and it will be some time before eradication efforts reach many areas of South Georgia.
