Georgia Farmers' Marke Bulletin Phil Campbell, Commissioner VOLUME 49 ATLANTA, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22, 1964 NUMBER 21 Georgia '63 Crop Values Increase As Acreage Yields Set Records Cotton, Corn, Tobacco, Distribution of 1963 Crop Value in Percentage of Total Value Peanuts Lead The Way The value of Georgia's principal crops during 1963 is estimated at $453,854,000 compared with $368,635,000 in 1962, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. This figure is for crops only and does not include livestock. The increase in value is due largely to record-high yields per acre for the ma- jor crops. Producers of the four major crops, cotton, corn, peanuts and tobacco, all produced record yields per acre. Corn production during 1963 averaged 43 bushels to the acre, eight bushels above the previous record set in 1961. Peanut yields during 1963 averaged 1,500 pounds per acre, exceeding the 1961 record by 290 pounds per acre. The 1963 corn harvest for grain is estimated at 74,691,000 bushels which exceeds the 1962 crop by 24 million bushels and is nine million bushels above the previous record production year of 1961. Weather conditions, especially in the Southern areas of the state, were very favorable for corn production. The 722 million pounds of peanuts harvested in 1963 is the largest production since 1948 when 818 million pounds were picked and threshed and is 174 million pounds above 1962. Cotton was the most important crop produced in Georgia this past year with a value of $111,222,000, followed by corn with a value of $94,858,000. Tobacco ranked third in crop value at $85,347,000, with peanuts coming in fourth at $82,251,000. The four major crops, cotton, corn, tobacco and peanuts, accounted for 82 percent of the value of all Georgia field crops. One other crop which chalked up record-high production records during 1963 was pecans. The 1963 pecan crop was estimated at 82 million pounds which is 67 million pounds above the 1962 short crop (Continued On Page 8) New DeKalb Area Technical School Offers Wide Variety Of Courses To The Individual Many high school seniors are now trying to make up their minds where to continue their education when they graduate from high school next spring.
