Georgia Phil Campbell, Farmers v/B lleti Commissioner ME 49 Hold On fo Farm: land Is Valuable _ By PHIL CAMPBELL : Commissioner of Agriculture Land i ds the best investment a farmer, irmers who are selling valuable farm is a matter for concern. There is much taik today about the real population explosion. In Geor- there is a definite building boom to care of the expanding population in own state. More and more people are ing into Georgia everyday. Areas that a few years ago were considered 1 or farming areas are today suburbs ur cities, dotted with hundreds of Ww homes, shopping centers, filling sta- s and industries. es the need for recreational r 1g our life span and to save more ba- es t birth. There will be more and W be more and more houses and apart- ents built to take care of this expanding ulation BUT THERE WILL NOT ANY MORE LAND. he demand for additional land will ease. Since World War II farm profits have steadily decreased and made additional. _ work for farmers in industry necessary, BUT, on the other hand, the value of farm land has been steadily increasing at the same time. Therefore, if at all possible, farmers should hang on to their land. Remember, there will be more people. There will be more houses and industry . but the number of acres of land will remain the same. YOUR FARM LAND IS VALUABLE. IT IS YOUR BEST IN- VESTMENT. KEEP YOUR LAND. . PEANUT PRODUCTION Peanut production in Georgia is ex- pected to total over 637,000,000 pounds this year. This will be about 90,000,000 pounds more than 1962s output. The yield per acre is expected to reach 1,350 pounds. This will be 100 pounds more than the previous high established in 1960. RECORD PECAN CROP The August report of the Georgia Crop Reporting Service says 1963 pecan production in the state is expected to to- tal 88,000,000 pounds. This will be 12 per- cent above the previous record set in 1961. That year 78,600,000 pounds of pe- cans were produced in Georgia. Georgia First @ PROTECTED FOREST LANDS @ IMPROVED PECANS @ BROILERS @ PEANUTS = QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON Rural Civil Defense By HAROLD V. CLUM Rural Civil Defense Specialist Cooperative Extension Service University of Georgia GO: How will fallout aflcer Gyestock > A. Animals are affected by fallout and radiation exposure the same as people, although there is a difference between species as to resistance to radiation ex- posure. Animals exposed to fallout would suffer skin burns and internal damage. If animals drink fallout in the water or eat it in their food, the radiation may cause serious internal injury or death. Q. Should dairy cows receive special fallout protection? A. Yes. Since dairy animals are such a vital source of food, they should re- ceive the best possible or preferred shel- ter in case of emergency. Q. Will fallout affect sheltered live- stock? A It could. Livestock require the same shielding protection from radioactive ma- terials as humans. Any kind of shelter, including a densely wooded area, is bet- ter than no shelter. However, the type barns found on most Georgia farms would not provide adequate shielding for live- stock from heavy fallout. Q. What kind of sleeping facilities should I put in my fallout shelter? A. I believe this would depend on in- dividual needs and desires. Some persons would need better sleeping facilities than others. Tiers of bunk beds are most com- - monly used and seem most practical. However, except in special cases bunks probably would not be necessary. In re- cent tests at the University of Georgia, volunteers slept for two weeks on a con- crete floor covered by a sheet of thin corrugated cardboard. @ PIMENTO PEPPER @ NAVAL STORES Capitol GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN Atlanta 3, Georgia Phone JAckson 4-3292 D.
