_ Farmers Bulletin : Commissioner ATLANTA, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1961 NUMBER 7 Sen. Russell's Efforts Secure Plant For State Due to the efforts of Georgias Senior ator, Richard B. Russell, Georgia has n selected as the site for a peanut and an marketing research laboratory. Funds for the laboratory were pro- led in the U. S. Department of Agricul- budget for the current year, market quality and the handling and age of peanuts and pecans nationally. ill also be concerned with grains and er agricultural products of the South- ast. Plans and specifications for the re- h facilities are underway, and build- should begin in the near future. The U. S. Department of Agriculture ned Dawson, Ga., as the location for new Georgia plant, pointing out that vson is close to the heart of the rgia~-Alabama peanut production area hat produces approximately one-third of A. It has existing peanut shelling and processing facilities. In addition, Georgia also produces more than half of this countrys annual crop of improved varieties of pecans. In announcing the location of the plant, Secretary of Agriculture, Orville Freeman, said that improving the mar- ketability of peanuts and peanut products will benefit farmers by making these pro- ducts more attractive to the consuming public. Research to be done at the laboratory in developing improved methods of hand- ling, storing and grading peanuts should also reflect benefits to farmers, he said. In addition to the range of marketing research work on peanuts and pecans, the laboratory will be able to deal with problems of insects attacking farm and commercially stored corn and other grains produced in the Southeastern States. We commend Senator Russell for his efforts on behalf of the Georgia pecan and peanut producers in securing the la- boratory for our state. In addition, Senator Russell recently secured an amendment to the Interior Appropriations bill when it was before the Senate providing $665,000 for the establishment of a forest research labora- tory at Athens, Ga. Senator Russell stated, This facility is greatly needed in order to find ways and means of com- bating forest diseases and to find better methods of utilizing forest products.
