NUN EEE 27 ss Takes Senator Dick Russell Man of Influence Georgias Dick Russell was named first in a REDBOOK Magazine survey te: determine the most influential members: aS of the United States Senate. This survey, published in the Feb- ruary edition of the magazine, asked Sen~ ators and Congressmen, Who (leaving aside the Vice President, Speaker of the House, and the Majority and Minority _ leaders) are the three most influential members of the Chamber? With one out | of three members participating in the survey the results show in the Senate: Richard B. Russell, 25 percent; Harry F. Byrd of Virginia, 10 percent; and Carl | Hayden of Arizona, 10 percent. REDBOOKS article described ehe tor Russell as Chairman, Armed Ser- _ oe vices Committee, unchallenged leader of - Senate Southern Democrats, the largest single cohesive bloc of votes. Tall, patri- cian, unmarried Russell at 64 speaks with- out exaggeration when he says, My men ~ will do this, or, my men will do that. They will. oe In addition, the survey also named Senator Russell, along with Harry Byrd of Virginia as one of the two most popu- lar senators among Republican members, -even though both are Democrats. Large, round, dark. rind, yellow meat watermelon seed, | SICKNESS IN ANIMALS | The office of our state chemist frequently receives re- quests to analyze samples of feed believed to contain sub-.. stances causing sickness or death in farm animals or poultry. These requests come from people such as the farmer, a county agent, a veterinarian, etc., and quite often have very little information for us to proceed on. In order for the state chemist to intelligently tackle such a problem, he needs certain information. First of all, ; before a sample of such feed is sent, a veterinarian should be consulted. In case of death, an autopsy should be performed to determine whether death was caused by a disease or a toxic substance. In the experience of the state chemists office, | the feed is rarely ever to blame. He If the veterinarian decides that it is a toxic substance, he should indicate what he thinks it is. Otherwise, the chemis- try laboratory may run numerous tests and still not hit on the. right one. In addition to the veterinary report, the feed guarantee tag should always be enclosed with the sample.. - Quite often there are various drugs added which are toxic if 3 the levels are too high, ; sprouts, 6, $3.00; Muscadine|Clover. PAGE EIGHT Swine Will Be Validated Brucellosis - Free MARKET BULLETIN _ (Reprinted from Agricultural Research) Validated Brucellosis - Free Herd | vuats a new term hog producers are go- ing to be hearing more about. Its going to be widely used in an in- tensified swine brucellosis eradication effort just begun by the States and USDA. Heres how the program works: Individual herds are validated brucel- Icsis-free for one year, using all proced- ures recommended by the U. S. Livestock Sanitary Association and approved by USDA and cooperating States. In brief, these procedures consist of two consecu- tive negative blood tests of each adult an- imal in a herd. When a herd qualifies, the owner is supplied with an appropri- ate sign bearing the symbol of validation identifying his herd as a source of bru- cellosis-free hogs. ARS veterinarian C. K. Mingle, who heads brucellosis eradication work, points out that such a herd will be known as a Validated. Brucellosis-Free Herd. This ' hew term replaces the designation Certi- ~ fied Brucellosis-Free Swine Herd, which ~ has been used in various State swine bru- _ cellosis programs. Reason for the change, Mingle ex- plains, is that hog producers generally associate certified with the production testing certification programs of pure- bred swine associationsas in Certified _~ Meat Sire and Certified Litter. The word validated is being used to avoid confu- Sion 6 Sales Events March 15 Thursday 1:00. PM PUREBRED POLLED. HEREFORD SALE _ KATY BEE FARMS, Keliy, Jasper Co. Handicrafts FOR SALE About 5 percent of the Nations swine herds are infected with. brucellosis. In some areas, it 1s estimated that 20 to 30 percent of all herds are infected. Besides costing the swine industry about $10 mil- lion a year, this disease is a serious haz- ard to human health. In the past, most cases of human brucellosis (undulant fe- ver: resulted from Brucella abortus, the - bovine strain of the disease. But with the marked reduction in bovine brucellosis, the main source of human infection is now Brucella suis, the strain commonly found in swine. In 1959, for instance, more than half of the 892 documented cases of undulant fever were traced to contact with swine, EMPHASIS FIRST ON PUREBRED HERDS Eventual eradication of the disease in all swine herds is the goal of the pro- gram. However, according to Mingle, major emphasis first will be on valida- tion of purebred herds. These are the source of most breeding boarsand swine brucellosis is primarily spread by infect- ed boars. The disease is also spread by contact with other infected animals or -with contaminated feedlots and pastures. Symptoms include abortions and weak _ pigs, failure to settle (because of abor- tions which occur so early they arent noticed), lameness, and temporary or per- - manent sterility. ; Quilt tops, $2.50 ea. squares pieced to put together.
