NUMBER 1 ASSY COTTON GETS HELP C.C. C. To Make Loans On Special Cotfon (Released by the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Washington) The U. S. Department of Agriculture announced today that upland cotton which is reduced in grade because of the presence of extraneous matters such as grass, bark, stems, etc. and up-land cot- ton which is designated as wasty, will be eligible for loans under the Commodity Credit Corporation 1961 Cotton Loan Program. Although this special conditioned cotton has not been eligible under any previous CCC rate program, it has been eligible for purchase at reduced rates une der the 1959-60 Cotton Purchase Pro- gram. Loans on the up-land cotton which is reduced in grade because of the presence of extraneous matter will be made at a rate of Ic per pound less than the loan rate for the grade to which the cotton is reduced. Loans on the up-land cotton which is designated as wasty will be made at a rate of 4c per pound less than the loan rate for the grade and staple length shown on the classification certi- ficate covering the cotton. The action taken by CCC today is ex- pected to help cotton producers market this kind of cotton in an orderly manner and at a fair and equitable price. estetlons of screwworm have been red in the Southeastern eradication eorgia, so far, has not had any new ion, but extreme caution should srcised to insure the costly pest does ppear in our state. infestations were reported last in Northeast Mississippi and South- Tennessee, The cases in Tennessee Geo rgia : OF THE SOUTH (OF THE MISSISSIPPI Screwworms Crop Up have not been confirmed as yet, but all indications point to screwworm infesta- Hon. Treatments in the research project - include: 1. Coastal Bermuda grass as baled hay; 2. Coastal Bermuda grass as pellets, and 3. Alfalfa as baled hay. - It has been well established that Coastal Bermuda grass has certain sup- erior characteristics such as high yields, _ efficient use of fertilizer and water, as __ well as resistance to drought and disease. However, the most practical way to util- ize it for dairy cows has not been ade- - quately studied. Members of the Georgia Milk Com- - mission and the Georgia Dairy Produc- ers Association were instrumental in es- tablishing the theory of using Coastal in the pelleted form. This stemmed from * on many of our soils, perhaps Coastal _ Bermuda can be processed to become its equivalent. __ Field work is being conducted at the Southeast Georgia Branch Experiment Station, Midville, Ga., and laboratory _ work is being conducted i in Athens. _ Anyone interested is welcome to _ visit the facilities and see the animals that _ comprise this experiment. _ the thought that if Alfalfa will not grow. The following article should be of interest to all persons interested in income from pecan trees.) Preparing for Nut Harvest. When following a year-round system of grazing, the vegetation should be re- moved from under the trees a few days before nuts begin to fall. There are two methods, mowing with roto-mowers that shred vegetation into tiny bits of material mowing with sickle type mower and whereby it is usually necessary to rake the mowed vegetation from under the trees. This may be used for hay if of high quality or as a mulching material. Mow the vegetation as close to the soil sur- face as possible. If re-seeding crimson clover is part of the year-round pasture, in addition to re- moval of excess vegetation, it is important that soil surface be harrowed or scratched to a depth of approximately two inches. to insure the proper seed bed for ihe germinating hard clover seed.
