Farmers ulleti Commissioner NUMBER 37 ISLAND agriculture and of Georgia's industry will not sufficiently give to Georgia her share of the national economy. Tourism must also be de- veloped for Georgia's tourists and for these out of state whom we would like-to visit Georgia - because of their spare time and their spare dollars. There are many places in Georgia that could compete favorably with other places in the nation if they were properly developed for tourists. The following article is the first in. a series about Georgia's natural resources that are being or should be developed into re- creational areas and fourist attractions. ATLANTA, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY, MAY 17, 1961 First In A Series RGIAS JEKYLL conomy of the United States chartered on the leisure _time indicates that it won't be long before we will have what is commonly known as a 30 hour work week. Continuing on this trend, we can easily see how the off hours or leisure time of the people of this nation is going to affect the economy of our nation. Georgia must, therefore, develop her natural resources if she intends to survive in the struggle that is developing to attract man during his surplus time when he spends his surplus money. _ The coniinued development of Georgia's past half century the United ced blessings that could be er population has expanded, living longer and healthier lives and farming have become so echanized that she requires few- he production of the necessity he nation from a 70 hour hat is known as the 40 hour th: most offices in big cities han 40 hours. The future certainly houses; bowling alleys; a picturesque golf house; an auditorium; tennis courts; miniature golf and driving range and many, many beach shelters and benches. These are the new. But the old his- torical and the natural beauty and wild- life are the favorite attractions. of most visitors. A walk on the beach usually means a scavenger hunt for shells, drift- wood and giant sea turtles bigger than grandmas washpot. Looking away from the beach you may see a buck and doe playing or a flock of wild turkey roam- ing around. There are even several white deer on the island. The historical attractions are innu- merable. Tours are available through many of the millionaires old homes. His- torical markers tell of slave ships that stopped on the island, of pirates and quakers visits, of Spanish settlers and of old home and battle sites. The Jekyll Island Hotel offers a story _ of history in itself. Each Saturday night a dinner-dance is held in the old Jekyll Club House. Even with all that is available at Jekyll now, Ben Fortson, Chairman of the Authority, says that soon there will be many additional facilities on the is- land. Plans are now being formulated for a fishing pier and boat basin, a golf cours: reputed to be one of the five best in th nation, a recreational building | for high school groups, and more extensive land- scaping which is already making J ekyll a No floral paradise. By the end of the year, Mr. Fortson - Hotel and many cottages and residences, make the island suitable for year round - vacationing and living. Jekyll now also boasts: a nine hole _ golf course where you may play all year, all day for $1.00; an amusement center for the children; 2 miles of beach walk; the Aquarama with meeting rooms to ac- commodate 2,000 and an air conditioned and heated swimming pool; a complete and modern shopping center; a marina with boating and fishing equipment for rent; lighted picnic facilities and camp- ing facilities, with showers and all equip- ment needed for rent; modern bath S ao Island.
