Its a constant fight, this business of loping, holding and expanding prof- ole market outlets for highly perish- 8 produce. But. strong optimism pre- Is in Texas today. Almost a decade ago, severe freezes urly demolished south Texas citrus. or- ids. That jolt was a rough one. Vol- @ of production is just now begin- g to resume its former stature. But many feel the freezes were like is, O Learys cow and the Chicago fire uetion, with a plan. Helter-skelter marketing methods and selling of culls in competition with tained jolts, much more decisive than freezes. They affect all fruits and etables grown in the 14 major pro- cing areas of Texas. Theyre relying on Federal keting orders and agreements as the hicle to coordinate their efforts. Before they took a single step, Lower ley farm leaders made on-the-spot tveys of how marketing agreements NUMBER 25 TEXAS hey opened the way for sound recon- sh produce of high quality have been wked in Florida. They held meetings, TATE EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI studied pros and cons extensively, and invited the U. S. Department of Agricul- ture to hold hearings and conduct re- ferendums. They nominated local com- modity committees to administer the pro- grams. Their first order became effective just two years ago. It was on tomatoes. Results were gratifying. In the last six months, growers and handlers have ap- proved marketing orders and agreements covering oranges, grapefruit, carrots, and lettuce. Another on onions is proposed. Under the marketing order and agreement programs regulations are -de- termined by the grower-handler com- mittees, as approved by the Secretary of Agriculture. To help these committees operate within the legal machinery provided by Congress, the Agricultural Marketing Service has opened a new fruit and veg- etable marketing office at McAllen. Strength of the program lies in co- operationeverybody working together. Local county extension agents are a bul- wark of strength. Theyve worked closely. with growers, helped with referendum details, explained opportunities available under the marketing orders. Extension and experiment station folks at Texas A. & M. And south Texas folks are making full use of market news, crop estimates, acreage-marketing guides, and marketing research. All of these aspects are important. But underlying all formal organization is a determination among growers and handlers to ship reputation produce the kind that will invite repeat orders for high-quality, attractively and uniformly packed fruits and vegetables. Things are rolling in south Texas this winter. Consumers buying south Texas produce are the chief benefactors. Grow- ers in other parts of Texas and in other States are watching developments close- ly. Would marketing agreements and or- ders work for them, too? Whether their dreams fully or par- tially materialize, fruit and vegetable growers and handlers in south Texas can point with pride to their goals, ambi- tions, and efforts . . . a place in the market for their produce, uniformly pack- ed with quality. School Lunchrooms Featuring Chicken Georgia-produced chicken is featured in school lunchrooms throughout the state during February as a salute to the states broiler industry, which ranks first in the nation and is the chief source of farm income in the state. During 1959 Georgia produced 303,- 031,000 broilers to lead all states, and its 1960 output when totaled, is again ex- pected to top that of all states. Broilers also have become Georgias chief source of farm income, with cash receipts in 1959 amounting to $153,000,000 or 21 1/3 percent of the total cash of $717,810,000 that Georgia farmers received for their 1959 marketings. In Georgia, the school lunch program, too, has grown, and is now the largest food service industry in the state. cme Ceorgia, First: @ BROILERS @ PROTECTED FOREST LANDS @ PIMENTO PEPPER @ PEANUTS @ IMPROVED PECANS @ NAYAL STORES ie EORGIA MARKET BULLETIN BESS State Agriculture Building Editorial and Executive Oifices 39 Hunter Sireei, S.
