Farmers Bulletin Commissioner _ Phil Campbell, VOLUME 46 . ik ATLANTA, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1980 NUMBER | : PART IV MILK | aa Great progress has been made toward stabilizing Georgia's dairy Industry during the past few months. eee The progress was possible because representatives of both producer and distributor associations sat down at the conference tabla, discussed thelr mutual problems and agreed upon conditions under which both could operate fairly and equally. But despite the progress that has been made to date there is still considerable room for improvement and especially in regard to distributors. We are unable to determine just how strenuous an effort has been put forth by the distributors but we have reason to believe that they have not exerted themselves quite as much as they should and could to live up to their agreements, The producers have done a remarkable job of settling differences within their organ! zation and honoring the agreemenis they made at the conference table. If the distributors would exert themselves as have the producers there is no rea- son why they should not also consolidate their problems and put themselves in a like po- sition of honoring their agreements. - Unfortunatly it would appear that where the producers have worked hard to keep faith with the industry, the distributors have left it to the Department of Agriculture to accomplish those goals the distributors themselves agreed to achieve, - A couple of distributors have failed to honor the agreements decided upon and accept- ed by the dairy industry at the conference table. Unless these issues are soon dissolved, the entire dairy industry in Georgia will de- teriorate to the point where it will be in the worst condition it has ever experienced in regard to relations within the industry as well as relations with the press and the com suming public. ; : The industry will be torn asunder in a climate of distrust, jealousy and bitterness. Representatives of the dairy industry in Georgia need only to look at the conditions - that now exist in some other states to visualize what could easily happen in Georgla. - The harmony that now exists in Georgia's dairy industry provides the healthiest clt- mate the industry has ever enjoyed except for those distributors whose failure to act in good faith clouds the horizon of progress. It is to be hoped that the distributors who are acting in good faith, can lend their in- fluence toward solving this issue within their own ranks. The producers have taken it upon themselves to wash their own dirty linen. Are the distributors, as a group, going to stand by and leave it up to the Department _ of Agriculture to expose their dirty linen to the public eye or are they going to solve _ their problems themselves as the producers have done? : Only the distributors, working together for the dairy Industry as a whole, can answewt this question, : PAGE TWO MARKET BULLETIN.
